So I was accused of "Acting White" today at work...

Ignorant black people perpetuating a negative stereotype which will result in the race being looked down upon... you know it boggles the mind how any african american with any self respect or intelligence can say shit like "da whye mang be keepin me down". THe ghetto subculture bitches and moans about being oppressed but the way they act does nothing to change things.

but then again i have answered my own question... people that act that way have no self respect or intelligence.

This statement couldn't be more sweeping...

Never had this problem (though I'm sure some of you have). Though, in my community education and self-betterment is praised.
In the black community it isn't praised enough. We spend too much time trying to bring each other down, whereas we should be boosting each other up. If you never grew up around blacks who called you "white", you might not understand. I went through that garbage every day of my childhood. Hell, I still hear it.

Why we do this to each other is beyond me. Sad.

OP you did nothing wrong.

Jus tbecause some stupid ass people (be they black or not doesn't matter) call you stupid in their kind of way doesn't mean you did anything wrong.

Be optimistic.
YOU have a job. These idiots probably don't.
YOU earn money the legal way. These idiots probably don't (maybe (hopefully) I'm wrong on this one).
YOU had the courage to talk up to them. These idiots only wanted to be a dick and they were.

You did everything right, they did everything wrong and just because everybody you talked to dropped the subject pretty quickly doesn't mean that you made a mistake. You acted correctly and showed those people who's boss in the store, who's the better man and who's gonna earn extra cash because you had your day off, man, and you still made progress in your career. These other guys don't even HAVE a carreer.

Think about what you have and these "homies" don't. You will see that you are the better man in every way.

Probably the best post in this thread. OP listen to this man!

OP - I can't say I know how you feel (I'm white) but I can say you did the right thing by letting it go. You're the one who's a positive member of society, setting a good example for the rest of us. You can't argue with ignorance - you just move on and do what you do.

You are you. Don't change who you are based on others' expectations.

Hopefully all the posts above me made you feel better. Fuck those guys.

Lived in the black community and again I've never had this problem. The thing is, I believe, it's generational and not necessarily a "community" issue. Usually, the ones who start all that you act white crap is younger blacks who wants to belittle others because their situation is all out of whack.

I'm really surprised a Black man in his early twenties seems so new to this sort of thing. I'm 24 now and I've gotten that shit since as far back as I can remember. Hell, even to this day...

My only advice to my fellow "Proper" speaking/acting Black brothers is to just shrug it off. People like that are extremely insecure about them selves and their lives and should just be ignored. And always remember that there is nothing wrong with you.

As a wealthy white man, I am just happy that black people can tear each other down so much. Makes my job of keeping the black man down much easier!

I'm actually poor as shit :(

Yeah, this shit annoys the hell out of me. But it's a sad thing that the only way they can feel better about themselves is by trying to "disown" you and by proxy explain that the only reason they have it so bad is because they haven't sold out because they're keepin' it real.

What's in the back of their mind is that they think if they sold out they could have a job and be just like you, that you're not special or better than them.

That's a messed up situation to be in dude. I think the store is better for not having people like that come around again, though.

I hate it when people walk into public places and start behaving in a loud and abrasive manner.

Coincidentally, this brings back memories of high school. One of my best friends was black and he spoke the standard variety of English ie not "gangsta" and some of his black friends would also accuse him of try to act out of his race. So stupid.

You did right OP. My friend (who is a half Rwandan & German) was accused of the same thing when we were at a bar. I was speechless. It kind of ruined the rest of the night but at least it didn't escalate. It was baffling to us that talking in a certain way was dictated by your race.

That said, I do my best to hide my mid-western tendencies or say things like "y'all" now that live in Cali.

This is like when backwater hicks complain about anyone more educated or classy then them.

To all unedumucated folks out there:

Its not trendy/cool to be ignorant.

Of course it is. Just look at how many dude bro guys or backwater hicks act toward the "minorities". Or how feminism is viewed by many guys.

People adapt to their environment and try their best to fit in.

That is so wrong.

You can have all the money in the world but you can't buy dignity and good character.

I'm not sure if you know what "power" means.

Sounds like finishing college and getting a decent job and being a respectable member of society is doing more than enough on your part. Put this behind you and continue to succeed. They will likely be working for you or someone just like you at some point in the future.

I hate when stuff like this happens. Its seriously one of the most offensive things people can say to anyone of color. I used to get this a lot as well and I know I still will in the future so I definitely understand where you're coming from. You did the right and professional thing. Its things like this is why I see myself becoming such a bitter old black man in the future. Ugh Sick of this kind of shit.

If the world was a better place, you could have kept it real with them and showed them why you're a success and why they're a bunch of dumb ass, bum ass people. But you can't reason with ignorant motherfuckers so you did the right thing.

So why were you acting white?

All joking aside you should be used to this by now, hell I'm arab and we get this sort of shit for not acting like bedouins a lot. Grow the fuck up.

hee hee @ meme generator.

As others have said, OP did nothing wrong, and ultimately their response to you was a reflexive/ignorant/defensive one. They see your success and they feel obligated to knock you down for being outside of their mold.

I don't understand this really; I don't get this at all. I mean, no one even come up and starts that shit to me. I'm well educated, dress well, and speak proper english (when I deign to talk at all) but a simple head nod to your brothers, white, black or middle eastern usually sends them along their way.

That, and I've been told time and time again, I look like the devil/evil, it changes every time someone gets friendly with me. So~ yeah.

They would have started shit with anyone in there. Since you're black they decided to play the race card. Some young black males decide to embrace a lot of the negative black stereotypes because it makes them more "real" or whatever and helps them fit in with other blacks who do the same thing. They expect all other blacks to act just like them or else they're Uncle Toms, sellouts, etc etc etc. It's a fucking destructive mentality. Instead of supporting black people who are trying to make something of themselves they try to tear everyone else down. I've known too many people like this.

It's weird, I was always the smart black kid growing up since elementary school but this never happened to me even though I grew up around these types of people. The ghetto wannabes who didn't care about school, got into fights and stuff like that. Instead everyone kinda thought...like, I was just super smart. Like because I was black and smart, I could build them robots and stuff like that. It was pretty funny. Everyone also made a big deal when I got into a good university. I don't think I've been said to be acting white, except by non-black people who said it because I wasn't acting stereotypically ghetto
Same. The most I've ever been called by other black people is "corny" in a joking way, nothing really like the OP experienced.

Not to antagonize the OP, because those guys were in the wrong, but I have to say that I also agree with this post:

They were ignorant assholes. But I think the money is in what I quote below.

Why are you expecting them to act "ignorant as fuck"? Seems you have certain expectations of black males. Maybe they perceived that.

Of course you do, you were annoyed by them the moment they walked in going by your words. Just because they acted a certain way, doesn't mean they completely fail at understanding when someone has preconceived ideas about them.

As an intelligent and well-spoken black man, I've received the "white-washed" criticism as well. Not a lot, because I generally try to be cool with everyone, but its happened before. However, at this point in my life, I can also say that I've run into just as many black guys who seem to reject anything even remotely considered "black culture" as though it were born of the plague. Black people who shun anything "ghetto" and go out of their way to prove that they're "not like that." And sometimes it shows. And it's just as annoying, in my opinion.

I hate to say it, but the Uncle Tom stereotype does exist.

Just the other week I was at a party with a few coworkers, and I was talking to this other black guy that was there. I noticed we were the only two black guys at the party, and I commented on it. His response: "Well, we're the right kind of black people." In all seriousness. I was stupefied. I'm mean, really? In 2011? I was about as offended as I would be if some old white dude told me I was a credit to my race.

I'm not saying that the OP deserved to be antagonized. Nobody deserves that. But I have to agree with the quote in that it seemed like you were expecting them to act a certain way from the moment they walked into the store. And maybe they picked up on that and went out of their way to pick on you?

Yeah, but judging by the OP post, he likely had contempt written all over his face inducing this reaction. The group is certainly the guilty party, but I have a hard time finding the OP to be completely innocent in this case.

And yes, the whole thug/praising ignorance culture is very annoying and detrimental clearly.

EDIT^^ Just say the thread above me. Yeah, I echo those sentiments.

Yeah I've gotten off pretty well too, back in High School I used to have friends from both the ghetto and more well-off social circles. I guess I've been sorta in the middle.

Funny, in my experience white+non-black people are the biggest offenders of the "acting white when you're black" stuff.

People are pretty disappointed when that black dude they are about to meet does not match up to what they saw on TV or whatever (DMX-tier). AFAIK "acting white" is pretty encouraged amongst blacks so long as it is synonymous with getting your shit together. I wonder where OP lives that he had to run into these guys.

edit : Also,

"Guy 1: Hey, XXX, look at this fool all dressed up and thinking he hot shit"

Was that his nickname or something? XD
