So I was accused of "Acting White" today at work...

But I have to agree with the quote in that it seemed like you were expecting them to act a certain way from the moment they walked into the store. And maybe they picked up on that and went out of their way to pick on you?
What they "picked up on" is that someone had the gall to tell them to shut up. They are the kinds of guys who demand respect when none has been earned. I doubt they were clairvoyant and able to pick up on the Uncle Tom stereotype you described.

The original poster wasn't rejecting anything about black culture, unless black culture consists of being loud and obnoxious in a store.

Not to antagonize the OP, because those guys were in the wrong, but I have to say that I also this post:

As an intelligent and well-spoken black man, I've received the "white-washed" criticism as well. Not a lot, because I generally try to be cool with everyone, but its happened before. However, at this point in my life, I can also say that I've run into just as many black guys who seem to reject anything even remotely considered "black culture" as though it were born of the plague. Black people who shun anything "ghetto" and go out of their way to prove that they're "not like that." And sometimes it shows. And it's just as annoying, in my opinion.

I hate to say it, but the Uncle Tom stereotype does exist.

Just the other week I was at a party with a few coworkers, and I was talking to this other black guy that was there. I noticed we were the only two black guys at the party, and I commented on it. His response: "Well, we're the right kind of black people." In all seriousness. I was stupefied. I'm mean, really? In 2011? I was about as offended as I would be if some old white dude told me I was a credit to my race.

I'm not saying that the OP deserved to be antagonized. Nobody deserves that. But I have to agree with the quote in that it seemed like you were expecting them to act a certain way from the moment they walked into the store. And maybe they picked up on that and went out of their way to pick on you?
Good God I wish the rednecks around here would pick up on the fact that I don't want to talk to them. Just because I'm white doesn't mean I want to hear their narrow minded stance on Mexicans or that I won't be offended when they use the racist epitaph sand n*gger.

That piece of shit nearly got my fist in his face. Instead he got a much more civil than he deserved "Get the fuck out of my sight."

Ahhhh Kansas. If you're brown... don't stay in town. For your own safety and sanity. Small town Kansas in particular. To this day, from people younger than me I still hear that shit. Fucking rednecks scare away all the pretty ladies.

Honestly... living in this area has made me hate white people. Of course not on the whole, you can't hate an entire people... or well a sane person shouldn't, but way too many still exist in that bubble.

So for the most part I'd much rather talk to the internet. At least those that hold such views are erased from existence here fairly quick.

They were ignorant assholes. But I think the money is in what I quote below.

Why are you expecting them to act "ignorant as fuck"? Seems you have certain expectations of black males. Maybe they perceived that.

Of course you do, you were annoyed by them the moment they walked in going by your words. Just because they acted a certain way, doesn't mean they completely fail at understanding when someone has preconceived ideas about them.

I'm certain that their behavior was a response so some subliminal perception of low expectations that he had for them. Having this superhuman ability, they decided to confirm said preconceived notions instead of breaking them.

Because that totally makes sense.

I didn't say that OP was rejecting black culture. Just that it sometimes happens that way. It's not ALWAYS a case of ignorant, unintelligent black people picking on the poor educated black boy. I've met black people who have come off as very contemptuous of other black people, or black cultural aspects that they don't feel are exemplary of black people in a white society. And it's obnoxious.

Hell, the Uncle Ruckus character from Boondocks is based on a mindset that's very real. That's what makes him so funny.

I'm not saying that the OP was doing this. I just brought it up because it did seem, based on his wording, that he was expecting them to act a certain way before they even did anything.

Yea, that's kinda what it seems like. I can't think of any other reason dudes would just lash out on OP like that.
They only said something to him after he told them to stop being loud. I doubt they even noticed him when they walked in.

Just to be clear the op didn't look like this right?

Aaron McGruder is honestly one of my favorite writers out there right now. I love social commentary and satire. Tom is a funny character. Almost oblivious to the fact that he's black, given the name of Tom... McGruder knows how to layer a joke. Wish I had a tenth of his skill. I tend to go for low hanging fruit.

I have no idea where I'm going with this other than I need to watch a few episodes of the Boondocks.

OP's story sounds so fake but I`m giving him the benefit of the doubt.

This dialogue is just...
I have the same vibe as you this story seems like there are details missing. I don't doubt that they were giving him the insults he posted, but in the back of my mind I get a feeling the op might have some resentment towards young black males. From the get go he seemed agitated at their presence. He said he told them to keep it down, but I think there was something more in his tone or body language that set them off.

I am also a black male who is a college graduate and has worked in retail for over 10 years. I have dealt with many black customers and employees who don't speak as well as I do, but I don't get any negative feedback like the op because I go out of my way to respect everyone and not talk down to them. I have often been complemented from my black employees and customers on how well I communicate.

I think the OP is the one who started shit and is leaving details out. his first thought when black people come into the store is pretty much the same as a redneck saying 'i hope these niggers dont try stealing something'. and its clear in the OPs mind that he can't be racist because he is college educated and in a management position. I think his whole high-and-mighty thing might not be focused directly on blacks but I guarantee when he was talking to the black customers they felt demeaned right off the bat even if his bad attitude was more based on his distaste of ignorance. No matter how highly the OP thinks of himself hes just another black dude at walmart, just like the ones he has contempt for.

So, is this topic a 'whitewhine'?

You did the right thing OP. Never wrestle with a pig. You both get covered in shit but the pig enjoys it.

First off, never worry about what anyone says about you. But especially don't give a shit about what a bunch of ignorant mfos like those say about you. They were probably not used to people trying to tell them to act civilly.

They never saw me upon entry. In fact they didn't even know I was there until they started getting loud. I was going to let it go, before their noise became a distraction, so I had an obligation to tell them to stop. Then, cue that conversation. I don't feel better than anyone. I do however feel sorry that they have the mentality that success=selling out.

The fucking guy is in charge of a store in Atlanta. He probably knows trouble when he sees it. Not much use in denying his lived experiences.

Clearly you know the OP's heart all too well. He is righteous and self important for doing his job, but groups of people who walk around in public loudly playing the fool at the expense of anyone in earshot are actually just poor defenseless victims of black on black racism because someone called them out on it. But they aren't at all racist themselves for pulling the Uncle Tom card. No way.

Had something like this happen before. OP, you shouldn't concern yourself with those under the delusion that they can judge you in accordance to some "racial creed". It's their problem for associating success to a skin color. In the same way no one wants to be pre-judged on the actions of some members of their race, to assume that anyone in your race is the authority on you (or race itself) is just as closed minded.

Clearly you are right, given that the OP is not only himself a black male, but YOUNGER than the guys who entered the store. Brilliant.

But the difference is THEY only play the Uncle Tom card against high-and-mighty college educated management blacks who start shit and leave details out, so that they feel demeaned right off the bat, therefore NOT RACIST.

OP did you apologize for everything about you and say that they were right, that you should be full of respect and that you'll make an extra effort next time. Then did you go and bitch about them to your colleagues afterwards?

No? Well you weren't acting white enough!

to OP, thats just messed up.

I hate it when blacks go against blacks because they're 'better educated'

You know what? It's not your fault you were taught manners, and have a good paying job, and perform your job admirably.

Self-hating derogatory terms like 'Uncle Tom,' are just terms to keep the black man down.

Fuck those guys, they need to take some Black Studies classes.

this is kinda how i feel, as an asian-american.

like, when i see a bunch of asian tourists taking PEEKCHA after PEEKCHA i get annoyed too. like foreal? you seriously need to take 4-5 shots with the peace sign out EVERY time? seriously stop, you make my peoples look bad in amurrica

Talk about low-level problems.

Wait...I completely overlooked this tidbit. You're in charge of a store in Atlanta, which is home to more black businesses and entrepreneurs than most major cities in America, and you have fools acting like you're in the wrong for calling them out on being disruptive? They are dumbasses. Period. I knew most of this was because those dudes were jealous, but this just proves it.

[Verse 1:]
I'm fearless
Now hear this
I'm earless
And I'm peerless
That means I'm eyeless
Which means I'm tearless
Which means my iris resides where my ears is
Which means I'm blinded
But I'm gonna find it I can feel it's nearness
But I'm gonna veer so I don't come near
Like a chicken or a deer
But I remember I'm not a listener or a seer so my windshield smear
Here, you steer, I really shouldn't be behind this, clearly cause my blindness
The windshield is minstrel, the whole grill is roadkill, so trill and so sincere. Yeah, I'm
Both them there
Took both pills, when a bloke in a trench coat and the locs in the chair had approached him
Here
And he clear as a ghost, so a biter of the throats in the mirror
The writer of the quotes for the ghosts who supplier of the notes to the living
Riveting is rosy, pockets full of posies, given to the mother of the deceased. Awaken at war,
'til I'm restin' in peace

[Chorus 1:]
You goin' over niggas' heads Lu (Dumb it down)
They tellin' me that they don't feel you (Dumb it down)
We ain't graduate from school nigga (Dumb it down)
Them big words ain't cool nigga (Dumb it down)
Yeah I heard Mean And Vicious nigga (Dumb it down)
Make a song for the bitches nigga (Dumb it down)
We don't care about the weather nigga (Dumb it down)
You'll sell more records if you (Dumb it down)

[Verse 2:]
And I'm mouthless
Which means I'm soundless
Now as far as the hearing, I've found it
It was as far as the distance from the earring to the ground is
But the doorknockers on the ear of a stewardess in a Lear
She fine and she flying, I feel I'm flying by'em 'cause my mind's on cloud nine and I'm a mime
At the same time
Pimps C the wings on the underground king
Who's also Klingon
To infinity and beyond
Something really stinks, but I Sphinx like Leon
Or lying in the desert
I'm flying on Pegasus you're flying on the pheasant
Rider of the white powder, picker of the fire flowers, spit hot fire like Dylon on Chappelle's
Skit
Yeah, smell it on my unicorn, snort the white horse, but toot my own horn (sleep)

[Chorus 2:]
You've been shedding too much light Lu (Dumb it down)
You make'em wanna do right Lu (Dumb it down)
They're getting self-esteem Lu (Dumb it down)
These girls are trying to be queens Lu (Dumb it down)
They're trying to graduate from school Lu (Dumb it down)
They're starting to think that smart is cool Lu (Dumb it down)
They're trying to get up out the hood Lu (Dumb it down)
I'll tell you what you should do (Dumb it down)

[Verse 3:]
And I'm brainless
Which means I'm headless
Like Ichabod Crane is
Or foreplay-less sex is
Which makes me stainless
With no neck left to hang the chain with
Which makes me necklace-less
Like a necklace theft
And I ain't used my headrest yet
They said they need proof like a vestless chest 'bout the best, fair F-F-jet in the nest
Who exudes confidence and excess depth
Even Scuba Steve would find it hard to breathe
Around these leagues
My snorkle is a tuba, Lu the ruler around these seas
Westside Poseidon, Westside beside'em, chest high and rising
Almost touching the knees of stewardess and the pilot
Lucky they make it flowered
Personal floating devices, tricks falling out of my sleeves
David Blaine
Make it rain
Make a boat
I make a plane
Then, I pull the plug and I make it drain
Until I feel like flowing and filling it up again..(Westside)

[Chorus 3:]
You putting me to sleep nigga (Dumb it down)
That's why you ain't popping in the streets nigga (Dumb it down)
You ain't winning no awards nigga (Dumb it down)
Robots and skateboards nigga? (Dumb it down)
GQ Man Of The Year G? (Dumb it down)
Shit ain't rocking over here B (Dumb it down)
Won't you talk about your cars nigga? (Dumb it down)
What the fuck is goyard nigga (Dumb it down)
Make it rain for the chicks (Dumb it down)
Pour champagne on a bitch (Dumb it down)
What the fuck is wrong with you? (Dumb it down)
How can I get on a song with you? (Dumb it down)

Except for the fact that this can and does happen, even if it isnt instigated by the employee. Some people change between the vernacular and some dont, but im sure he didnt instigate it. Even speaking proper english at the register to the wrong guy can get you funny looks or assumptions that you're talking down to them. Its a rare occurance, but it does happen.

Chris Rock knows whats up. Also "Uncle Tom" mentality, education, or not, you can tell when someone is going to come in your store / wherever you are and start trippin.
Regardless of race.

EDIT: Lol just noticed the director was little PP.

To be honest, you shouldn't really be telling people to shut up. And with people who aren't mindful of their surroundings it isn't the best of ideas.

Everyone should know that it isn't going to exact a polite response unless they're intimidated by you.
