So if my computer doesn't start when I install a PCI card...

What does that mean?

I got a USB2 PCI card for my G5. When it's in, the computer won't start. The light comes on, then clicks off. That's it. When I take it out, the thing starts fine. I tried installing, then pushing the button on the motherboard, and that didn't work. Any suggestions?

Is there any chance that the apple is looking for proprietary hardware, and the card you are trying to install is not compatible?

Well, the card has the Mac logo on the front, so I figure it should be compatible. Is there a list I could check stuff like that?

Edit: I thought the power supply might be a problem too, but I don't know why it would be. I'm haven't added any extra devices, so I can't see why adding some USB ports would be a problem.

I've tried switching the slots as well; no dice. Anyone know if I can up the voltage of my power supply? I thought I'd seen somewhere that I can set my computer to eat up more voltage.

Ok, thinking about the power supply thing...Normally I have my tablet and scanner plugged in, both of which draw power from the G5. Currently, they're not plugged in (I unplugged them when I installed the card), so I really don't think it could be a lack of power.

i really doubt it's your power supply but here's a simple test you can do:

pull the power from your drive(s) and pull any other pci cards you may have in the machine. if you have a lot of ram, pull all but one stick. insert usb2 card. power up the machine. if it gives the same behavior, it's probably not a power supply issue. if it powers up and boots normally, call apple and get them to send you a replacement psu.

my money is on it being a hardware incompatibility though. does the card support openHID? was it marketed as specifically supporting macintoshes? can you find anything in the apple TIL mentioning your symptoms?

other good places to look are macintouch and macfixit.

ps, when you're pulling stuff from your machine to test the power supply, pull all your external input devices as well (anything that's drawing power from the internal psu).

If I had to guess, the PCI card is bad. Thus, causing compatibility problems on the MB. Have you tried the card in another computer?

Aside from mine, we only have laptops here, so I can't check it on another computer. I'll call Apple tomorrow and ask about compatibility. Either way, I'll end taking the card back tomorrow either for a replacement or a refund. It works out pretty well, 'coz I have to make sure the owners got my resumé. Well, thanks for the help everyone!
