So if Solid Snake and Solidus are both clones...

Hmmm I don't think so, Ocelot is talking to the President, but there's no mention of Solidus iirc. Pretty sure he's only introduced in MGS2.

"No sir, no one knows you are the third one, Solidus".

That's what Ocelot says at MGS's epilogue call.

People in Alaska vote too you know.

They are always worried about the president's foreign policy cause they can see Russia from their houses.

In my mind, Solid watched TV one day and saw this candidate that looked familiar. Decided to vote for that guy because why not, and mushed his dogs for a week to vote.

re: spoilers. Technically this title is a spoiler for the ending of MGS1

But even back then it was a lame spoiler. When you reach the epilogue and hear Ocelot calling someone "Solidus" you could not avoid groaning on the poor name choosing.

I really hope, that if they ever make a prequel Snake in alaska just before the shadow moses incident, that we can fight sarah palin. She would be a pretty cool boss to fight!

These threads always make me think of this. I loved MGS2, but the plot got a lilll bittt crazy.

Big Boss' physical appearance and existence was classified. His story was only declassified in the lead up to MGS4. So outside of Solid Snake, Miller, Liquid and Ocelot (or people that had actually met Big Boss) it wouldn't be public knowledge that Solidus bears any resemble to anyone else.

Was it really? I remember old material saying that Big Boss was a celebrity and even went on to tv shows?

Maybe I am wrong.

edit: the MGS4 encyclopedia backs me

He joined an LRRP (long-range reconnaissance patrol) in Vietnam and fought alongside SOG (Special Operations Group), the Green Berets, and the Wild Geese. Later, he became a mercenary who appeared in numerous territorial and ethnic conflicts around the world. He achieved near-mythical status, even becoming a minor media celebrity at one point. After that, he served as a combat instructor and worked to reintegrate former child soldiers into society. Big Boss was also reunited on the battlefield with Frank Jaeger, the soldier formerly known as Null. He took Frank and his foster sister Naomi back with him to the United States, where he helped them establish normal lives.

I can see that.

Tonight, we have a great guest! Big Boss! He will teach us how to kill a man with the blunt end of a knife.

He was but his betray wasn't public.

Even if Snake didn't watch the news, it would be likely that someone would tell him how much he looked like a younger version of the president whenever he went shopping for food.

Its made clear quite a few times that only Solidus is a true clone of Big Boss. The other two Snakes are weird pick-and-chooses of Big Boss' genes. "Clones" in that they use the same gene base, but Solid and Liquid are both engineered.

You don't need to come up with shitty explanations using Nanomachines. This is literally something in the MGS series that makes "sense", aside from technology of the eighties being super-advanced in terms of genetic engineering, and highly suspect interpretation of recessive vs. dominant genes.

But Snake looks exactly like Big Boss.

People complaining about spoilers, ffs. Game has been out for over thirteen years. Society is not obliged to protect you from plot details in an old-ass game you will most likely never play.

Solidus is a perfect clone. Snake has all the recessive genes.

Better than gaseous snake.

No one would make that connection unless they were taking a really good look at both of them.

is this something people do? going up to strangers and being "o hey, you kinda look like this famous person if he was younger!"?

Also, about the original question, Old Snake also looked quite a bit like Big Boss, who had experienced a resurgence in popularity thanks to the Snake Eater files being declassified, yet no one except Eva and Ocelot ever comment on it.

I don't see why they wouldn't. I get random ass comments about looking like a certain singer and we're no where close to being identical. The president of the US is a huge figure and the beard and mullet doesn't hide how much they look alike that much.

Yep, see above.

It might be a simple case of not being relevant. At the time very few knew about liquid why would snake or anybody make the connection between George Sears and snake, not even liquid did and he knew about the minor details of the cloning.

This is just a case of hindsight is 20/20. Who would think to question why a president with a highly doctored background, I mean his war crimes were certainly wiped by patriots, that probably removed or hide any logical connection to him and snake be related to snake?

Let me ask you thinks how many of you guys figured out the secret of the body in mgs4 without the revelation?

Yep, see above.

It does, in my experience. A change in hair style, color and facial hair can completely change the way a person looks. Combine that with the fact that Solidus looks much older and most people would never think they look anything alike.

Regarding looks, Old Snake and Big Boss still look different enough in MGS4 (I suppose one of the reasons would be avoiding a silly situation where you're not sure who you're looking at):

So Solidus during his presidential years would look almost exactly the same as Big Boss does in MGS4, maybe just slightly younger and without the beard, judging by Yoji Shinkawa's drawings during the MGS2 cutscenes.

To me, it's all just a silly excuse to have a badass US president, 90s action flicks style so I'm fine with it, even though it's pretty ridiculous (but then what isn't in the MGS universe).

My memory is kind of fuzzy but wasn't bb made of solidus parts in mgs4?

Big Boss = sperm
Japanese lady = egg
Eva = belly space for 9 months and vagina

edit: Also it's worth pointing out that Big Boss only shot blanks because of his presence in automatic tests which necessitated the whole clone thing in the first place, just as it spurred Solidus taking another's child (Raiden) as his own

I never got this explanation for Solid Snake's half-Japanese ancestry. I thought it was already confirmed Big Boss himself was half-Japanese.

In that case it's just a redundant character detail. Raven confirms it in MGS1 and MGS4 simply outright states how it happened.

He isn't. There isn't many details on his days pre-Snake Eater.

Edit:

From the Metal Gear wiki. If this is true it makes no sense for the egg to be from a Japanese woman.

The Metal Gear Solid: Official Mission Handbook, published in 1998 by Millennium Books, gave an alternate account of Big Boss's early years. This information has since been retconned in more recent games, in which Big Boss was of a younger age, and had been a member of the CIA in the early 1960s. Similarly, his clones' Japanese heritage had actually originated with an egg donor's mitochondrial DNA.
In the Handbook, Big Boss had been born of Japanese-American descent in Hawaii.

Yeah, that's seemingly the sum of it. Big Boss barely survived Solid Snake's makeshift flamethrower attack in Zanzibar Land, was kept alive by Zero's nanomachines but announced as dead to the public, tombstone and all. GW had his whereabouts stored, the info was retreived by Raiden and given to EVA aka Big Mama who then used Solidus' brain dead body to patch up Big Boss and kept the rest as a decoy. I suppose the whole "patching up" deal is there to leave Big Boss stable and alive after Zero's nanomachines stop to function, since they were the primary reason BB was kept alive in the first place.

Solid Snake doesn't watch TV.
Or reads newspapers.
Or magazines.
In fact he does nothing at all but mush doges, everywhere else he goes with his bandanna over his eyes.

Honestly, I don't think Solid Snake cared about voting.

That's a shitty attitude you've got there, son. Your societal ideals are fucked.

Why does he wear the mask!?
Big Boss must have a massive ego.

Imagine having clones made after you and one is the President, one is a hero and another is...Well, never mind.

Either way, I'd be arrogant as fuck if I were Big Boss. Even his codename is ego boosting, not only is he a boss, he's a big'un.

How is it Solid Snake never noticed the President of the United States looked exactly like him? You'd think that would be disquieting to him, especially after he meets Liquid who also looks like him, yet it never comes up as a topic of discussion in MGS1.

Here's one for you, when colonel campbell shows snake liquids photo, Why the hell did snake cut and dye his hair? You'd think looking exactly like liquid would have been an advantage in a stealth mission......
