I never really made a 'complete' announcement here but in case I didn't my wife and I are expecting our first child. Yay. The process hasn't been 'without issue' however and right now my wife is in surgery undergoing a procedure to strengthen her cervix so that she can carry the baby to term (believe that's what the proceedure is anyways ). I've been sitting here in the hospital for a few hours and I suddenly thought to check my Mac and see if it had wireless access and lo and behold I have internet connectivity. So now I can look at GAF for a while as I wait - keeps the mind off the waiting.

I'll post again when I know something else. From what I've been told my a number of family friends who are doctors or who have spouses who are doctors, the procedure shouldn't be anything risky to wife or baby, but it is possible that complications could have 'consequences' for mother and baby. After the procedure my wife will be on bedrest for a few months and need me around a lot so I may dip off a bit, but I'll be sure to come back here and post to let everyone know how its going.

Yup most hospitals have wireless access these days... unfortunately it's often only in public portions of the hospital.

I'll keep you folks in my prayers, I'm sure things will be fine, as one new father to one upcoming new father. ;)

Good luck, you don't seem like the type to cater to others whims but try to be a good servent while she recovers.

Good luck, my man. How far along is she, if you don't mind my asking?

My wife is 21 weeks right now. The problem is that the cervix isn't large enough to accomodate the growing baby so what they've done is go in and put in something to strengthen it.

Someone married you?

hehe - yeah, we've been married 5 years now. As one guy who thought he'd NEVER get married, finding someone who would let me be 'me' was quite difficult.

:) That will indeed be a challenge to be perfectly honest. I'm used to pushing people to do a lot and now I have to deal with the fact that she shouldn't be doing ANYTHING for the next 2 months or so.

I just talked to the doctor and she'll be fine. This was actually a big problem because the baby was in a position where he/she was prepping for birth and at this early a time a child cannot survive outside the womb. What they had to do was kinda go in and 'reposition' things and make that cervix longer/stronger so the baby could grow without causing a premature birth.

Phoenix: I hope everything turns out fine, and both mother and baby are healthy. Often times, I think would be parents are pretty cautious about making the announcement so early because of possible complications. But I don't think you have to worry too much.

I'm sure fathers like Darien, Drinky Crow, and Bishop can prep on the joy of fatherhood. :D

It's called a cerclage, and involves a stitch (or several) that holds the cervix together. I've had several friends undergo the procedure. I'm sure she'll pull through just fine. But yes they are serious about the bedrest. You might want to loan her that laptop buddy, she's going to be bored to tears! There are some web based support groups for bedresters if she's interested.

Good luck to your wife and baby!
