What's the last made Double Dragon game? After speding hours with double dragon in the arcade (when I was a kid), and Double dragon II on my NES I definitley miss the series. I can still hum the music for DD II in my head.

Last Double Dragon game I bought was DD V on snes. It was ok, but not as good as the NES ones.

I enjoyed Double Dragon way more then Streets of Rage and Final Fight, they should bring that series back. Who owns the rights?

A company called Million, who outside of the GBA remake has done nothing with the series (same deal with the awesome Kunio games)

Last DD game I remember buying was Super Double Dragon on the SNES... quite a piece of shit, that. Nothing beats the SMS release of the original DD for me though.

yeah it was bothered by slowdowns and repetive enemy & level design.

Scott Wolf and Mark Dacascos happened.

The last real Double Dragon game was Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls (SNES, Genesis, Jaguar). There was a NeoGeo game that was released a short time later that was losely based on the movie but it isn't part of the main series.

The GBA game is, I believe, a port of the original arcade game.

Rage of the Dragons is not a real Double Dragon game. When the developers started the game they did so with the hope that they would secure the license but that never happened. That's why none of the names are quite right. Billy & Jimmy Lee became Billy & Jimmy Lewis, Abobo became Abubo, Marian became Mariah, etc.

Do yourself a favor and pick up Double Dragon Advance. It's a remake of the arcade game with tons of new moves, new enemies, new areas, 4 new levels, remixed music from the first 3 games, and updated graphics. All with no slowdown. Even with 8 or 9 characters on screen. It also has a survival mode and a 2 player mode.

No, DDV was a shitty fighting game based on the Double Dragon CARTOON SERIES. :::vomits::: and such best be forgotten about. :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but IIRC some of the different DD games are actually supposed to be remakes of the original. I thought I read somewhere that DD2 (arcade, not sure about NES) is actually a remake of DD1's story. Same with Super Double Dragon. Not that it really matters, since DD doesn't really have much of s story to begin with.

It's actually a remake of the arcade game with a lot of extra moves added and some elements/enemies from later games. Also had a few brand new stages/enemies (including "agents" :P ) added. DD Advance is my favorite DD game to date; I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good BEU. Even if you played the original DD to death, PLAY THIS GAME. It rocks! :D

I thought that a sequel had been announced. Jarrod, you reading this?

Been playing the GBA version lately, which is basically a remake of the first game, with a few more moves (the possibility to run, or punch your enemies in the face once they're on the floor, etc) a few enemies from the second and a few new ones, as well as a couple new chapters.
It's not bad, but i think they completely misinterpreted the true spirit of the original, with post atomic shit and redrawing a few sprites, missing the original 80's 'charme'.

What made Double Dragon so much better than Final Fight and pretty much every other side scrolling beat em up was the variety of weapons, techniques, and the different ways you could use most background elements. While Final Fight becomes VERY repetitive, VERY soon, DD was always fun and with a high replayability value.

Also, what makes DD the best title in its genre for me is; combats really felt and looked like street fights between average bad guys and not between some martial artist with their acrobatics, backflips and roundhouse kicks against a few random thugs.
There was no elegance in DD's animation, billy and jimmy lee fought for their life, you can see the strenght of their anger and desperation in every punch, and feel the weight of their punches when they land.
Ok, Guy and Cody were cool and all, but they were also so fake...too stylish to be believable.
DD always looked to me like a bunch of street gangs' kids beating each other up to death, a much more 'cruel', realistic representation (gotta love the way 2 characters look like they are catching their breath, bent towards each other, staring at each other, after beating each other for a while). Well, i liked it.

I recently played double dragon III through with my roommate on MAME. That game is total crap. I remember thinking so when playing it in the arcade, and haven't touched a DD game since.

I've been hoping they would make another Double Dragon, but it would have to be like the originals with updated graphics.

Double Dragon was probably my favorite game on NES. Two player co-op was awesome.

DDV was based on the cartoon series but it was still a numbered game in the series. It may not be in the same spirit as the previous games but its still a DD game.

The only game that was a remake was Super Double Dragon.

DD1 - The Black Shadow Warriors kidnap Marian. Billy and Jimmy go to rescue her.

DD2: The Revenge - After DD1 the only surviving member of the Black Shadow Warriors, Linda Lash, took it upon herself to learn the black arts. She used them to resurrect all of the Black Shadow Warriors who in turn murder Marion and seal her remains. Billy and Jimmy have the power to free her and in the end they have to fight their own tortured souls in order to purify themselves and unlock the power needed to penetrate the seal, and resurrect Marian.

DD3: The Rosetta/Sacred Stones - A new gang (not the Black Shadow Warriors) kidnaps Marian. The Dragons are approached by a fortune teller named Hiruko. She tells them that the people holding Marian are demanding the rosetta stones as ransom. The Dragons retrieve the stones but it turns out Hiruko was behind the whole thing. She only wanted the stones to unlock Cleopatra's tomb so she could steal all of the treasures hidden inside (one of which was said to grant eternal life). In the end the Dragons have to fight Marian (who's been possessed by Cleopatra). She awakes from the spell unharmed and the Dragons donate the treasure to charity.

SDD - Billy & Jimmy open a dojo. It gains popularity very quickly and starts to take away business from another dojo (the Duku dojo - secrectly owned/operated by the Shadow Warriors). Naturally they aren't too happy about this so they kidnap one of the Lee brothers' students (Marian) and it's up to Billy and Jimmy to rescue her.

Double Dragon on Sega Genesis is the version to get. Not only does it eliminate all of the slowdown that the arcade version had, but it also replicates the controls perfectly. The graphics were spot on and the music is also superior. Only 2 negatives would be the removal of a black Abobo being unable to kick barrels/stones.

Battletoad vs DoubleDragon was certainly one of the coolest crossover. They were HUGE franchises back then, made by two different companies, and the ending result was really cool.

Except for the capcom VS titles, this kind of team up would never happen nowadays.

Yeah I've been wondering the same thing. I don't see why the franchise needs to sit around and collect dust. Looking at how great the Viewtiful Joe games came out, I wish all these companies would start updating their old beat em' up franchises.

......and what's up with the Super DD bashing? That was one of the best games around back then and I still love it. Kickass lock combos, awesome music, and the most godly power charge system, man did those special moves rule. I loved the freaky enemies too, what's cooler than stylish blonde men with ponytails trying to cut you in half with swords? :lol

I've got Double Dragon II on the Megadrive. a poor 16-bit conversion of the 8-bit coin-op
(pathetic huh)

btw there were decent Genesis/MD conversions of DD1 and DD3.

oh and for those interested in the 16-Bit Nintendo Super Double Dragon aka Double Dragon 4, you might want to check out this page
http://www.classicgaming.com/doubledragon/rrddsfam.htm which talks about the differences between SNES Super Double Dragon and the SFC version: Return of Double Dragon

I still have DD1 and 2 for the Amiga..2 was fun, but 1 was a bad port. Master System/Mame are the best, IMO.

Has anyone else here actually beaten the NES Double Dragon 3? Most people I see talking about it say it's impossibly hard.

Whoever owns it did thier best to kill it with a bad movie, bad cartoon and bad games based on both of those properties.

its sad that the "beat'em up" has all but died

Ahh, memories. Back in 4th/5th grade, me and my friend talking my mom into taking us to Toys'R'Us to buy Double Dragon 2 for the NES, coming back home with it and immersing ourselves in DD2 bliss in my basement is one of the fondest gaming memories I have for some reason.

The only good version of Double Dragon III is the NES version. Give it a try; it's MUCH better.

IIRC Technos themselves said that they much prefer the NES Double Dragon II and III over any other version of the game that was made. DDII NES is also a very different game.

Uh-uh. I don't believe it was made by Technos and was developed by former publisher TRADEWEST. How they got to call the game "Double Dragon V" is also a mystery, since there technically was never an actual Double Dragon *4* that was made. :D

DDV is as much of a Double Dragon game as Rage Of The Dragons is.

Super Double Dragon was ridiculously fun. Perhaps DD2 (NES) edges it out as the the best in the series, but only by a slight margin.

The Genesis DDIII is based on the arcade game but the Genesis version is actually better in most regards. the NES DDIII was different and pretty good.

Yes and the final fight with Marion in the glass room was pretty cool.

:lol I saw an episode of the Double Dragon cartoon for the first time about a year ago...it ate donkey nuts.

Double Dragon on Master System was a lot of fun...played it with my bro all the time. When you beat the last boss at the end and that fat broad comes on, we'd race to jump off the ledge so we wouldn't get stuck with her. :lol The Genesis version is probably the definitive version of the original. As a single player game though I probably liked Renegade more, even though the controls for the C64 version were pretty messed up.

All this beat 'em up talk the last couple days just has me longing all the more for Spikeout Battle Street. Hopefully it's out here by the summer.

DDV is as much of a Double Dragon game as Rage Of The Dragons is.

There never was a DD4 but Super Double Dragon was the 4th DD game hence the name DDV. DDV is much more of a DD game than ROTD. For starters the developers of DDV actually acquired the rights to the series unlike the people behind ROTD. That all by itself is reason enough why DDV is more of a DD game than ROTD. Not only that but the cartoon that DDV is based on is also more faithful to the series' story than ROTD. A few of the same events that take place in the games take place in the cartoon series. ROTD story on the other hand bares little/no resemblance to the original story (Marian/Mariah was killed and never brought back to life for example). Heck, in ROTD Marian/Mariah is made out to be Jimmy's girlfriend when it fact she was Billy's! The only thing ROTD shares with the original are a bunch of characters with similar names.

I imported the japanese nes version of DD3 back in the days. Unfortnuatly, the nes adapter I had glicthed out after a couple of levels.

Erm, except Million is made up of the former Technos staff who created both series.

Really? I'd heard Million were working on GBA remakes of Downtown Samurai and World Cup Soccer? :/

Never beat it myself, i'd get to the fourth stage (Italy?) and die. i loved the music though. Genesis DD3 was remarkably easier than the NES version. Go figure.

I had rented DD3 and got to some mummy-like bosses and what I assume was the final boss before I had to take it back. It was one of the harder games I've played.
