If the 360 was able to manage 20% marketshare, I'd consider that a success. Anything less, a failure.

Took awhile before someone actually figured out that number sold means shit in comparision marketshare, that and profit :D

PSP sold well over 2m in JP, and yet a lot of Nintendo fans call it a failure. I personally think that X360 selling on par with PSP's first year in Japan could be considered successful.

As does the Japanese 360 management, as stated in their .. statement ... from last week. They said they were hoping for 1 million by Summer, 1.5-2 million for the first year.

I highly doubt it's going to get near those numbers, but yeah, that'd be a personal victory for MS in Japan.

lol, you guys are forgetting about Final Fantasy. Xbox360 has it, Japan has no choice but to buy it. :lol
the only problem is ..... it's been released on PC and PS2 already .... and will most probably be re-released on PS3 too ....

The PS2 port? I'd imagine Japan's 50 gajillion PS2 owners already have it...

They've got more Japanese content this time, but their strength is still overwhelmingly in western support. Japanese charts aren't dominated by first person shooters and racing games, they're dominated by jRPGs, PS2/P, DS and Gameboy titles. There was a great article in Games TM this month that drew lines between North America, Europe and Japan - comparing what comes out of those places to what sells in those places etc, with some commentary on next gen. MS have got one hell of an uphill struggle in Japan.

I agree: if it does that, it should be considered a success in Japan. And personally, I think it's doable, though by no means easy.

selling better than the original xbox does not mean it is a success. it just means they did a little better this time. If tons of systems are still sitting around in stores collecting dust, its not a success.
Sure... but what if in 6 months 360 manages to outsell what Xbox did ltd?

I think a good yardstick for MS would be 1.5-2.5 million units in the first year. If they can manage that, it's enough progress to really position them as a strong secondary platform (a la Saturn or PCE). And really, at this point it's probably the best MS can hope for in Japan (doing 5-6 million lifetime) unless something happens like FF/DQ going multiplatform.
