Shu Yoshida: Sony doesn't consider Nintendo competition anywhere except in Japan

Days of Play was an initiative that started around June 2017, anyone claiming that Days of Play 2025 is a response from Sony due to the launch of the Switch 2 has serious problems.

There was a lot of people on here saying that Nintendo is competition and will keep Sony in check. I guess Sony doesn't agree with those people.

It's not like Nintendo isn't curb stomping everyone anyway. There isn't really any competition to them.

Beating Nintendo is not difficult, you just need to break the bond between Nintendo consumers and Nintendo by attacking the supposed quality of Nintendo products with a campaign. Just get this one and everything will fall like a hanafuda castle.

Sony has no interest in Nintendo losing relevance as they are both Japanese companies.

Jeeeesus. Is this what Sony fans think like.....

What a fucking weird way to think about entertainment.

Because PCs exist.

If PCs were not a thing, Sony would have the monopoly of super popular games that nobody will play on a Nintendo Switch: GTA, Mihoyo games, Sony's first party and a very long etc.

So no, they aren't in direct 1-to-1 competition, as they are with XBOX and secondly, PC.

Nintendo has the handheld market. Sony, the home console. As said above, the overlap is tangential. Nobody is buying a Nintendo Switch to play third party games. It's a nice-to-have but not the primary buying factor.
PC isn't competition for home consoles.
Mentioning PC as a reason a console doesn't have a monopoly is hilarious 🤣

Nintendo and Sony battle for the console market no matter the ridiculous spins some of you try.

Top 5 best-selling first-party games for Sony and Nintendo in Japan

PS5 hardware - 7m
1. GT7(mostly sold from free bundle) - 378k
2. Marvel Spider-man(mostly sold from free bundle) - 324k
3. Horizon Forbidden West(mostly sold from free bundle) - 166k
4. Rise of Ronin - 144k
5. Stellar Blade - 137k

Nintendo Switch hardware - 36m
1. Animal Crossing - 11.3m
2. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet - 8.2m
3. MK8D - 8.1m
4. Smash Ultimate - 7.5m
5. Splatoon 3 - 7.1m

To me personally, this just shows that Japan has bad taste in games.

The only one who Sony considers real competition is whoever's the world record holder for most failed GaaS games right now. They won't rest until they've snatched that title.

How does a company consider another one a competitor?

It responds to whatever they do.

Rest assured, if a new xbox was launching instead of Switch 2, Sony would have moved around their SOP and added some games to steal their thunder.

Its Nintendo so they didn't respond.

Legit, I dont think Nintendo see Sony as competition anywhere. Theyve eclipsed them and elevated to a whole other level now. It would take a colossal fuck up to change that.

And y'all want Sony to be "more competitive in Japan". This list just shows that dropping Japan was the best thing they could do lmao. Give me the first 5 games. Please and thank you.

Hum...you do know Playstation makes more money than Nintendo and last time i checked they are basically tied in terms of MAU right?

How has Nintendo "eclipsed" them?

Let's be real here there is not much competition in Japan, Nintendo already won there.

Especially when Sony mostly focusing on western games.
They can't really compete with Nintendo in the traditional sense (i.e. making and selling software that the JP user base prefers), but they currently have a tight grip on the JP console gacha scene. They continue to sign exclusive deals for new gachas, and that's not because of Xbox; it's because they want to maintain their dominance in the JP console gacha space, which is incredibly lucrative (JP has the highest ARPU in gaming out of any nation, and players love spending their money on gachas). For example, the top 6 spots by revenue each month this year on JP PSN have consistently been held by Genshin (gacha), ZZZ (gacha), HSR (gacha), Wuthering Waves (gacha), eFootball (F2P), along with the occasional big release like MH Wilds, Nightreign, Oblivion, and Expedition 33.

Just recently Playstation made more profits than Nintendo but that was because of Switch 1 at the end of its lifecycle.

Switch has made $27 billion profits which is more than the entire Playstation profits history.

Switch 2 is going to net Nintendo much higher profits than the original Switch. We can expect Nintendo to make more profits than PS5 effortlessly.

Where are you getting $27 billion in profits from?

Anyone who uses this meme for anything clearly didn't watch Mad Men lol.
Just to expand on this because this meme is a pet peeve of mine lol.

Don actually thinks a LOT about Ginsberg and his work, to the point where he spies on his work and sabotages him at a client meeting, hence the scene lol.

Money has nothing to do with influence or global awareness.

Nintendo has, theme parks, mcdonalds deals on kids meals, pokemon, mario, a steady stream of incredible first party games...multiples of them a year.

There is no comparison to Nintendo.

Eh....I'm seeing Switch has$18 billion in profits during the Switch years (to 2024). 2696 billion yen. Another $2 billion in FY 2025 based on the chart below, it has eclipsed PS overall, but I don't see $27 billion

Didn't they launch their State of Play literally the day before Switch 2 launched? And also dud the Days of Summer sale during the launch as well?

Seems to me they did everything they could directly during the Switch 2 launch.

Basically the marketing dept and CEO decide amongst themselves who they think is a competitor or not.

A product category can have 10 big brands and the company making brand #6 might think competiing brands #4 and #9 are the key competitors based on similar products and target audience.

Kind of makes sense. But kind of doesn't because all the other brands (though different at different prices) are all competing for the same pie. And there's always overlap unless it's a very specialized product like some insanely priced eco product nobody wants except for 3% of people.

But for gaming, there's a lot of overlap IMO as a lot of gamers are multi-console gamers and households. And that even excludes PC and mobile gaming which someone can add to their gaming habits. Every gamer only has so much time and money to spend split across all platforms.

Sony is using operating profit in that picture; the tweet you just posted is about net profit for Nintendo.

Nintendo Switch operating profits
¥3358bn and then you have to convert to the actual exchange rate for each quarterly result to get the actual idea of income in the USD currency.

Considering how much of a cult the Nintendo fans become over the years, you won't be seeing much overlap between brands and their exclusives can only be found in only one ecosystem, while Sony became a third party publisher for the PCMR 🤷‍♂️
