So, with 80$ games becoming the norm are you gonna be pickier about purchases?

I'm picky since the beginning of selling fake contents, reviews unfortunately don't tell why these many games are so fake, even Zak or Alanah isn't in their best interest to point this topic, instead, they chose to shit on mtx, looting etc.

I'm picky anyway... It really depends on if it's a game I am super impressed by. I was like this even when games were $50-60

I'll be buying Virtua Fighter 6 whenever it comes out. That's a given. I'm getting Street Fighter 6 on Switch 2. I'll get the next Tekken on Switch 2 as well... Some games are day ones. Others will have to WOW me in their reviews.

I'm curious how this will affect CDKeys. That's basically the only place I buy brand new games and I never paid more than $47.
I only buy from key seller sites or steamsale, no way im gonna pay 1/6th of the price of a console for a single game.
It will 100% increase the price on key sites. Their buying price will be higher due to increased prices so their selling price will be higher.

I mostly buy on Sony and Steam and those have not announced any price raises. I. Boy currently affected.

My solution to others that have an issue with this slop premium is to support another platform and bankrupt the competition. But too many idiots in gaming...

Also @blacktout above me, everyone thought during E3 Sony was going to copy and follow Microsoft with the Xbox One. Everyone. And then they put out their legendary 20 second video showing us how you can borrow games on the PS4. Don't think Sony doesn't want to finish off Xbox by charging less until it happens. They recently showed off pricing for one of their big AAA games this year at $70 which is way bigger than MK.
That was a completely different time, and was done for completely different reasons. Sony was coming off of a generation where despite beating Xbox in the long run wasn't great for them overall especially in NA. They NEEDED something to help them beat Microsoft in 2013. They created that video backstage after Xbox's conference, and it's been said that Sony was originally aiming for $500/included camera but changed it last moment in order to help them optically.

Sony has no need for that now. Sony doesn't need to try to beat Xbox, and Xbox is killing themselves so there is no need for Sony to do a killing blow. Would it look good optically? Absolutely but despite multiple price increases the PS5 has continued to dominate Xbox and it's still selling similar numbers to the PS4 despite that.

Sony nuked the hype of that video when they announced in the same E3 event that online play would be paid.
Not for the vast majority of people though. The damage had already been done, and the hype from the lower price alongside all the other stuff made the hit from paid online much lower. Most people didn't care and if they did they bought it anyway.

This doesn't change a whole lot for me. Like others said, I've been pretty picky about paying full price on day 1 for quite a while now. Outside of a few developers, the last 5-6 years I tend to wait until a decent sale to pick games up. Also, I have GP Ultimate which definitely helps.

I was already picky because I don't really need to play anything day 1 and these days games just better after a few months like 50% of the time.

100%.

I'll buy a lot fewer games than I normally would. I'll also be more selective than I am already.

Hell I never gave into the $70 ones lol

So FUCK off with $80

A majority will be unpolished, unoptimized, buggy, AI, UE5 slop and need a year of patches.

Sales/key sites on PC and physical/sales on PS5 Pro. Same as right now, I VERY RARELY buy full priced games (even physical).

No. Gp. Everything else is a sale.
I can't imagine never playing anything not on GamePass. That's like 90% of the games I want to play.

Renting games for $250 a year and not picking them myself? Screw that.

That's almost as stupid as taking away ALL console exclusives for a platform and then raising the price by $100.

I'm already picky on new games.

Then again I've bought more new games this year than previous years already and we're not even half way through.

Yep, not planning to pay $80 or whatnot for any games. Will wait for patches and sales.

I am also going to be getting most games on PC, and not going to bother with Switch 2 for couple years either.

Wait for sales and just buy games you want to play. Simple. But anyway, USA, welcome to our world from down under! We've been paying these exorbitant prices on Playstation from day 1! Nothing has changed on our end.

No i just wait for sales.
And use all the fucking geolocation tricks i can use for digital.

I am on Steam exclusively and almost never buy anything not on sale. I debate internally for games that are $30.

I'm good here.

Tho ngl, I will throw down 80 for Bloodborne 2. But Sony actively hates that IP so I might be fine.

Beautiful thing about PC is that old games run at 4k whatever FPS you want (generally). Its completely viable to have a great experience even if the game is 10 years old.

My rule now is never day 1 (unless I REALLY want to play it), and must be 50 percent off minimum. Why? Games ship day 1 broken. Best version is a year later anyways after a bunch of patches.

Same, there is only a game like GTA6 or something I will do this.

But I am all about Steam, Keysites, PC shops sales or whatever.

If they did a full blown remake of Dark Souls, I will pay for that too. Day one!

I stopped buying day one games a long time ago, except for the ones I really like, which are usually few. Today I buy games 3 to 5 months after their release. It doesn't make much sense anymore, since games often come out broken and take months to fix. 🤡 And it will get worse :messenger_poop:

Yeah I'd be back in at a premium price point for a full blown remake of DS1 or something of that caliber produced by From.

I still hold out hope they see that they can add a new entry to King's Field.

Most of my hopes and dreams never happen in video games tho.

I took the $50 to $60 jump without much of a change in spending habits. It helped that Nintendo stayed at $50, so I only felt the pinch on 360/PS3 games.

The proliferation of microtransactions and season passes was pretty easy to ignore. Most games that leaned into scummy monetization were easy to pass on.

But, when games jumped from $60 to $70 without letting up on the nickel and diming on the side, I got real picky real quick. Point of fact, I don't think I've bought a $70 game at MSRP.

All this to say, $80 might not be much thanks to inflation and the rising cost of everything, but the psychological difference between spending $70 on a single game and $80 is still a tough pill to swallow. At this point, I'm content to wait indefinitely for a sale or bundle, or straight up pass on games I otherwise would have given a look, simply because of sticker shock.

My overall spending on gaming has actually gone down rather than up after the jump to $70. $80 is only going to make things worse. I can't imagine I'm the only one, but I also don't imagine that it's making a difference. With industry simps already calling for $100 games to help the poor publishers survive, I wonder where the line is.

My cling to hope is, they did Demons Souls remake and NEXT... Well next is Darks Souls ha

I would be fine with Blue Point making it even

Course in my perfect world From would do it and put in ALL the shit they wanted to the first time and it would be a masterpiece of all masterpieces

No I don't think I will be pickier at all. I will do what I have done for the past 20 years. I will buy games I think are worth buying, either at full price or at a discount if I get lucky. The games I don't want anymore I will sell on the second hand market.
The 5-10 games I buy each year won't break the bank.

I buy a handful of games per year tops at this point. I also usually replay games several times if they're good. I scaled way down years ago.

I've been playing Subnautica and Hunt: Showdown exclusively for the last month.

I value my time more than the money. The games I'm willing to waste my time on are worth significantly more than what I pay for them.

I've purchased two games over $50 in the last decade: Zelda BOTW special edition at launch and Links Awakening remake in 2019. Outside of that? Most of my PS4 library was like $8 off PSN, I buy Steam games off CDkeys for $10 or less. I'm years behind releases 99% of the game, so $80 is lightyears away from my brain computing that. Hell, the most I've spent on a game the past 5 years was $30 for a physical copy of Silent Hill 2 remake last Black Friday, and a physical copy of FF7R integrade last summer for like £26 off Amazon UK( before they reprinted them in NA).

Oh, is that why the PS4 barely sold any units? Everyone talked about that video and it was a mic drop.
Yes, looking back that video was an excellent piece, it neutered any possible internet outrage for the paid online. But the later nuked the hype for me because Sony basically went from "We won't repeat MS's mistakes" to "maybe..." in a few hours.

I have gone full steam ahead. I no longer buy games new. I have a huge backlog and wait for games on sale. With everything going to PC, I have setup Moonlight/Sunshine and all console purchase will no go into my PC. I'm one of the lucky ones that got the 4090 new, and will not need to update in a while.

No, it's not the norm just because Nintendo is trying to get away with it. We'll see. I sure as hell am not buying a game at an $80 price tag. It's gotta be something special to justify that.

If it does become the norm then of course people will be pickier. Ultimately its gonna affect enthusiasts who play a lot of games. We won't play as much. So the $80 these companies are trying to get us to spend is just going to shoot these companies in the foot.

For years now I've been spending more time and money on indie games that aren't produced by greedy corporations that chrun out the same cookie cutter experiences. So I suspect I'll start playing even more indie games. Not just because they're cheap, but because they're just legitimately better experiences overall.

I dont mind waiting a year or so for a game to hit $20. By then the game is usually in a better state with all the patches. I have plenty of games in my backlog to keep me busy.

Gotta be. With tax, that's almost $90 per game. I don't see the price increases helping the industry at all, and I think we'll see the number of development teams and employees decrease further.

More indies and AA games. I'm not paying $80+ for any new game unless I KNOW that I need it. Want it. Before, you could take chances and try stuff. But now I may wait for sales.

Most people are just going to wait for deep discounts. The publishers are just shooting themselves in the foot now.

already bought less since the last increase.

I take fewer chances on games and purchase only proven IP's now where as I use to say fuck it and give unproven games a shot.

I was already picky about prices when games went to $60. $70 and $80 is out of the question. Almost no game is worth that price to me.

It's a value proposition. I'm sure the new Donkey Kong game is going to be fun but I guarantee I'm not going to get $70 of value/fun out of it. $30-40? Sure...

My backlog is 100s of games deep. I don't need to buy these games day 1 and certainly not at full price.

Lol what?

Sony basically said PS4 is staying exactly the same as PS3, but we are now charging for online and that E3 for them was a huge success. I mean the fact that people still talk about that video today is really all the evidence you need to see how successful it was (and also the obvious PS4 being wildly more successful than X1)

For OP, yea probably. I mentioned before on some Nintendo threads but when games went to $70, I wasn't happy but I at least understood. Games were stagnant in price for nearly 15 years, they got larger in scope, increased story and narratives, and we fully got in HD compared to when $60 first went into effect. I don't see how these companies can justify going up to $80 in this short of time. I would argue most AAA games today have baselines or even regressed compared to previous years. Hell, if I would to make a list of my favorite games this gen, my top 10 would consist largely of indie and AA games.

I was already someone who would rarely get games for $70 day one. It would have to be something I was really interested in and trusted the developer. 80 is gonna make that even more difficult, especially with how fast games go on sale.

Games are going to live or die by word of mouth. I'd imagine the one "good" thing to come from this would be more pre-order incentives since there will otherwise be less people preordering with a price increase. The best thing to do is either give the $20 credits they came with once upon a time, or exclusive DLC codes which can be resold to offset the cost of the game.

Personally I've always said I don't care if a game costs $100. As long as it's worth the price I'm going to buy it. If I don't feel it's worth the price I simply wait for a sale or more likely just never buy it and move on to the next thing.

My buying habits changed when they moved to $70. I have been able to move past the FOMO, and have no problem waiting it out. Elden Ring has been my only full price AAA purchase since 2020.

Some tangentially related benefits include being able to play the best version of the game due to patches, and possible inclusion of DLC. It also allows the dust to settle on the consensus surrounding the game, to determine if it is even worth my time.

I didn't often splurge the full $60 for most Switch games. I'm holding some shred of hope that Nintendo uses the $80 price tag sparingly for their top budget games like Zelda and Animal Crossing, but I think it'll be a common price point for them. I accepted that Switch 2 games would be $70 a long time ago.

I know I'll pay $80 for Splatoon and my wife will force me to buy Animal Crossing even if it's $100. Don't see me doing the same for Pikmin or Luigis Mansion even though I like those series.
