So, with 80$ games becoming the norm are you gonna be pickier about purchases?

Every $70 game purchase I have ever made outside of TOTK was eventually a regret. If I can no longer rationalize a $70 game purchase, I sure as shit can't rationalize an $80 one.

It's not just about the money, but there's also the fact that games nowadays usually require a few patches out of the box. So yeah unless it's something I'm really really hyped about I'd rather get it on a sale, or maybe grab it right away if there's any cheap keys available.

It's not even the prices that make me be picky, it's the quality of the vast majority of new releases that is usually lacking. I'm not sure I will buy a single new game this gen that isn't made by From Software.
Have already TBs of games on a NAS at home with a backlog I can't finish even if I lived 500 years. We're good :messenger_winking:

Full prices games in Ontario have been $103 with tax for quite a few years now, so I have turned into a patient gamer. I almost never buy games at full price anymore whereas I used to buy 15+ games at launch annually and many others on sale.

Life in general is just so much more expensive here, and will continue to rise thanks to stupid Canadians. That alongside the potential increase in price of games even higher, I will reduce the amount of games I buy even more. Which is fine, I have a huge backlog. They can fuck off with these prices.

Im not buying anything on a whim for £70-£80.

Needs to be something im really interested in for that kind cash.

I can't remember the last game I paid full price for. I buy lots of new games but deeply discounted before and after launch thanks to sites like GMG. I'm about to sell my PS5 when Sony raises prices in the US but I might take before then. Their games are not worth $70. I'll get a switch 2 bundle with Mario kart since it has a good discount but that's about it.

I understood the$70 price increase since it has been$60 for such a long time, but jumping up to$80 already? Fuck off. I expect the games to be ready day one without patches and be feature complete with plenty of content.

I don't feel the pressure to buy most new releases anymore, even at the current price. It's not like years ago when the industry was moving forward at such a rapid pace. Once upon a time you'd feel like you were missing out, but not anymore. Most games from 5-7 years ago are indistinguishable from current releases. And there's just so many.

I just don't feel the quality or interest anymore in getting the biggest and best new thing, because it's hardly bigger and better than what came before, which is available in droves at a cheaper price.

EviLore EviLore this guy surely needs the tag "the poster formally known as Prince"

Already been picky cause I'll only pay full price for something like a new single player Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Witcher, and Resident Evil game.

Last game I bought for £60 was Zelda OoT. Well worth it. But I've not wanted anything enough to pay over £50 since, at that price (even with inflation) it stings. £80 games can f.off.

Physical collectors can last longer not buying at these prices than the companies can shovelling out £100M failures.

We need a crash to clear the decks and these companies could be right on course.

I have stopped preordering ANYTHING only buy day 1 on VERY FEW select titles that are worthy of the price (expedition 33 latest example).

Otherwise I wait until a steep discount. My backlog is huge so I'm not in any rush to play anything.

Last game i preordered was MGS 2 at my local because if you didn't you wouldn't be able to play it.

Never understand why people preorder games these days.

Yes. Good luck selling me on something not on the scale of BotW/Witcher 3/GTA for $80.

First time Sony tries dropping a 20 hour story driven game with 30 hour to platinum for $80 I'm laughing my ass off. The same goes for any company loading an $80 game with microtransactions out the ass.

I already did that when PC games jumped to 60 years ago, or just wait for them to be cheaper after a while, which will happen a lot more now for Console gamers i believe if they are buying them and not using GP which will probably go up as well at some point,

You can't keep increasing prices constantly and expect to keep the same sales or get more, only GTA can really do that, and most of the top games released in the last 5 years are no where near GTA 's level.

Nintendo broke the seal and it seems MS and surely Sony will follow suit with first party games for the most part costing 79.99. Are you gonna still be there day one to support the devs are are you all gonna wait for massive sales?

I'm gonna be damn picky about what constitutes a day one purchase at that price.
Most everything is going to be a sale or rent. Most games aren't worth the $80 price tag.

With sales being constant, i never buy anything full priced anymore. There's christmas sales, labor day sales, easter sales etc that happen so often throughout the year that if you're paying full price for a game then you're doing it wrong or just have to have that specific game.

Certainly, and I already am. I am usually a day 1 kind of gamer but those days are over. 80 for a game (meaning even more in my country) is a lot, and pretty few games deserve it. I have no issue with paying 40-50 for a half decent game, but when it's 80 I am picky. I probably won't buy many Xbox games in the future, if I decide to keep playing on Xbox at all. Game Pass will be me place for Xbox games, and then I'll buy some PlayStation exclusives.

I almost never pay full price for games, it takes something special for me to make an exception to that rule. During the 360 era I would purchase new games quite often, but ever since the prices went over £50 I just wait for sales now.

Second big gaming crash is here. No it will not look like the one from the 80s, gaming has gotten a lot bigger since then, and we live in different times. But we are seeing another economic reckoning for this industry. Mass layoffs, studios closing down, price hikes almost across the board, etc. It was around 2020 where $70 became the new status quo for AAA games. Now it's $80+ already. Plus with these sweeping Tariffs, everything is about to become more expensive, which will leave some people with less money to spend on luxuries, including games. There are way more alternatives to video games than there used to be, like streaming, youtube and tik tok.

We're going to see a lot more layoffs and more studio closures. The gaming industry will survive of course. It's too big and too diverse to completely collapse. But shit is going to get even more messy. I suspect gaming subsription services will get even more popular, as more gamers start to get priced out of their hobby.

welp. No more Call of Duty for me, then. you can fuck off. not buying a single game for 80$ US no matter what the game is.

will wait for a sale. Plenty of games to play. let's see who is going to be desperate for the money. me with the money in my bank or your sorry ass begging for my money.

good luck bitches

Totally. From now on I'll only get the games I like on day one, like Dragon Quest, Fire Emblem, Mario, Zelda, Xenoblade etc. I'll also purchase what would now be considered steals, games like Hollow Knight only being $15 and Expedition 33 only being $50 and the like. Fuck all that other shit until it hits the bargain bin.

Outside of a truly rare occurrence where I want to support a developer (usually indie) or a game releases that I just can't wait for (recently MH:Wilds - which ended up being a regret anyways), I set my wishlist, set notifications for when it goes ~$20 on isthereanydeal.com and wait for emails.

No way am I spending $80 for what amounts to modern day cashgrab/soulless crap.

$60 to $70 broke something in my brain. I went from buying a game a month down to a few games a year. At $80, I'll probably buy 1 game a year.
I was mildly okay with it at first because game prices hadn't gone up in 15 years. But honestly I'm not anymore, games are launching even more broken, still filled with dlc, barely looking better than last gen games. What's the point?

Realistically, if Nintendo's AUD$140.00 games catch on across the industry, I simply won't be able to afford new games. Period. That's simply too much money for any game - regardless of what it is. If Game Pass remains affordable, I'll probably just play what's on that and wait for word of mouth to sell me anything else. Games like Expedition 33 will always bubble up to the top, but now I'll wish list them and wait for a sale.

I was already picky with $60 dollar games, this new price point makes it even easier to go for new innovative indie games that are coming out every month or so. The only thing you need to let go is nostalgia and you will be eating good!

I've been picky for a long time now. I rarely buy games on day one or even in the launch window. I typically wait several months for significant sales.

To add some perspective...

Adjusted for inflation, a game that cost $49.99 in the late 90s (the average price of games then) would be close to $100 now.

$80 is not bad for a product that will give you 20+ hours of entertainment, and it's an even better deal for games that reach the 40/60/etc hour length.

My hobbies are gaming, guns, and golf, and even at $80 a pop, gaming is still the least expensive of the three

I already was buying less big games day one when they moved to $70.....and what am I getting for that? These bigger games come out more unfinished each year, they already do deluxe editions/dlc/fake early access, and they get marked down within months anyway when patches make it an objectively better experience.

Again, just encourages me to use my money on more AA and indie-priced titles, wait for discounts, play more my backlog, and mess around with more retro games I missed out on.

Literally Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is more than good enough fidelity-wise, so just drop graphics and team size to that vs. charging me $80.

My behavior doesn't change. I gave up most day 1 full price FOMO purchases a long time ago. I rent, play on sub service, or wait for a sale unless it's something that I know I will play more than once.

Answered this sort of in another thread, but pretty much my only Day One purchases are titles I'm extremely excited about.

Pretty much any major single player Sony or Nintendo title. Doom The Dark Ages I bought the deluxe on Steam for its early access despite having game pass.

For everything else - Game Pass or a good sale. I don't think I've changed this trend for the last five years.

And even for those larger games it usually takes months now days to get them into a good state. I am just going to pretend that games are released a year later.
