I don't think so. In fact I think gamers put up with a lot of shit nowadays. Unfinished games, small leaps in technology when compared to old times. Some of the stuff that gets a pass now would never fly in the Atari era, for example..

I don't think you can really ask too much. The development of video games is something we're all benefitting from collectively. They're essentially the equivalent of a gym workout for the mind (look up the efficiency of surgeons who play video games versus their non-gamer peers). As the money people realised the sheer profit that could be extracted from this business, risk-taking and convention breaking significantly slowed down. Lots of them are wasting time designing disposable products catered to offering a distraction and cheaply abusing pleasure centers, as opposed to providing an experience that can resound beyond the confines of the game itself. Sure, some people can screech, but it's easy to separate them from the thoughtful comments just by the depth and nature of their criticisms.

The reality is that there are lots of imitators these days, and many willing to throw money at games that harken back to old experiences.. and this phenomenon is plaguing the film industry as well. The problem with these reboots/remakes/re-dos is that the originals were inspired by lived experiences, fresh ideas, technological breakthroughs, etc, whereas the imitations are one step removed from the creative process, only looking to copy without really understanding why. With the sheer talent helming these studios, the power of modern game engines, and the near-limitless resources (money) that one can throw at these projects, one has the right to be a little dismayed at the results.

People are MUCH more educated on how the proverbial sausage is made. In all forms of entertainment. That and like others have said, games are often released in fucked up, borderline Beta states and the full-price paying customer is expected to test them.

I don't think it's changed. What's changed is publishers are pushing the limits of how much they can milk their customers for.

We have more games to choose from and gaming isn't cheap so of course gamers are pickier.

Standards have also risen over the years and with rising standards comes minimum expectations.


It also doesn't help that a lot of big publishers are launching buggy pieces of shit and expecting to patch them after launch, a luxury they didn't have in the past. Basically releasing full priced betas to their customers. ( Looking at you MS with that shitty MSFS 2024 release)

You have to understand games used to feel way more impressive and innovative in the 90s and 00s. Not to mention they came out much more frequently and didn't have all the mtx bullshit of today. So it's not surprising a lot of longtime gamers aren't impressed.

I think its true for a lot of things and not just gaming due to the reach and anonymity of social media. Back then when a game sucked, at worst you'd snap the CD in half and told your best friend about it. These days, people can cry about it on forums and X, send death threats and dance of developer graves.

I think people on GAF, mainly 30+, grew up with a PS1/N64, look back on the games they had during childhood and use that as the barometer. Often groundbreaking, with very fun gameplay.

I think we still had a lot of crap, but not as much as we do today.

The issue for me today is not entitlement, I'm just not buying what the main developers and publishers are pushing.

We have more crap (cut and past bloat on the digital store fronts because anyone can make a game now), games from the major teams that don't focus on gameplay and treat you like a dummy, and a what now seems like a very small handful of high quality games dotted between (RDRII, BGIII, TotK, Hades etc)

It's a bit more nuanced these days. F.ex., I started gaming at a time when games literally took 2 to 8 weeks to make.. and there was no internet to bitch on either for that matter..

Are more passionate gamers who love to get online and talk about their experiences of what they just played more picky than they used to be? Yes they are. As they are given more in terms of quality from some companies, they begin to make that the standard and anything under the standard is unacceptable.

Are average gamers who just play video games as a hobby to relax and be entertained? No. In fact they can care less about how good the game looks and focus more on if they game is just playable. There is a reason the GTX 1660 is still being made and selling after all these years and why people keep their GTX 1080s. The "8GBs of VRAM isn't enough" doesn't mean shit to the people still on 6GBs running the games on low settings and still having a good time.

The mistake game studios made, was that they think "we can just ignore the vocal minority", without realizing that the silent market is still there, judging. The market might not tell you what they want, and even when they tell you what they want it is often actually wrong. But that does NOT mean you get to ignore your paying customers.

Game studios are offering a service. One that is not essential to life, so one that customers can and do walk away from. Game studios have took customers for granted, and that is something you can NEVER afford to do.

Stalker was 2 days old and it already pulled 1 million copies with no PS5 version.

I think the market spoke loud and clear, the vocal minority "hating" on Stalker 2 well some people literally live off negativity so thats all the content they post.............not that we should excuse technical issues but the online discourse makes everything seem alot worse than it is.
Stalker 2 isnt in a great place, but isnt a dumpster fire.
And its already on track to sell pretty damn well for the kind of game it is.

New patch coming soon and a PS5 version eventually, GSC should be proud of themselves.

I think people are getting more entitled but more importantly people can now form kinda a hate/dislike group about a game and participate in it which even might be more fun that engaging with the games itself.

That being said many genres are really stale right now they kinda have the formula now on what a game in a specific genre should be.

In addition to that is the dumbing down aspect of modern games which means reduced the amount needed to think on how to interact with the various aspects of a game. This make them just a chore to play.
