SOCOM 3 is a remarkable addition to the venerable franchise. The team at Zipper has maintained the series' solid mechanics and feel, while doubling the number of online players per match, expanding the size of the maps, adding fun, drivable vehicles, and even throwing in a worthwhile single-player campaign to boot. Whether you're a longtime fan of SOCOM or you're new to the series, SOCOM 3 is well worth the price of admission, and is proof positive that a great, large-scale shooter can be done, and done well, on the PlayStation 2.

I've never really got into a SOCOM game before, but I'm tempted to try. How's the online community generally, same as something like Halo 2? Lot of camping, cheating, etc...?

It's nothing like the community you find in Halo 2. Not even close.

Nah, some people still camp. However, the community is a helluva lot better than on Halo 2. Not as many kids calling everybody that kills them a fag and whatnot.

I don't know about US community but the Pal community is pretty excellent in Socom II.
Lots of adult folks there(who are relaxed and cool) and the kids you meet seem be very calm.
Maybe the game has a hidden tranquilicing effect?

SOCOM used to be THE cheater game in the past. I am sure they have cleaned it though. But you can never be sure if cheaters will ruin it or not. I think we will know in a few months or so.

socom 3 also requires a credit card to play ranked games (still free, CC needed for verification)

the credit card barrier should weed out lots of potential idiots and cheaters.

never played the first one, but the number of cheaters in socom 2 was VERY, VERY LOW

I can't even read Socom without a picture of that damn loser on Spike TV's, biggest Socom fan or some shit like that..... *shudders*

To his credit it was nice for once that someone who won that Ultimate Gamer thing to actually be good at the game he won it for. I remember the dude that won the TOny Hawk contest completely blowing at the game when he went against the testers.

Yeah I saw that Tony Hawk episode, that guy was terrible.... But this guy, I couldn't stand him. He just came off with that "trying to hard" vibe, and together with the host, it just seemed like it should have been an episode of trading spaces or something. And I couldn't stand the fact that all he would say was "WHAT!!" I mean, the guy is like 26, and he'd rather play Socom than tap his girl at night...... wtf.

Damn. I need to get some wireless adapter for my PS2 so I can play this. My systems are so damned far from the router. Anyways, sounds awesome.

For those who already own it, the single-player is even good this time around? I tried playing the first level of SOCOM 2 single-player and it was pretty damn boring...

I'd like to know this as well. The buy 2 get 1 free deal is quickly approaching.

PSO offline had 4-player splitscreen and was hella fun. SOCOM on the other hand doesn't sound so hot offline. Maybe I need to check out Battlefield.

because we needed to review something when the game came out, and we're not too keen on reviewing online beta play or developer-hosted sessions anymore.

yeah because people didnt cheat in other games that required a credit card *cough*PSO*cough* or on xbox live, which requires a CC and an annual fee...

Well you do know better than them! SHOW THEM THE WAY KID!

Let's see: broken animation, frame rate problems, low poly psone characters, extremely low res textures etc.

looks like a 5/10 to me

That's it! You really got me with a screenshot! It's not like the reviewer played the game or anything!

It is pretty sad when a PS2 game can handle 32 player battles but on Xbox anything more then 16 and the game goes to crap. I had GR and Halo 2 and the game never ran smooth with anything above 6.

i always thought socom series looked like shit as well

add a choppy framerate and you can count wario64 out of socom until next gen!

This is zipper interactive we are talking about here. Do you really think they will deliver? All three of their games on PS2 looks like shit and Socom PSP looks really terrible too, the odds are against them.

They improved their netcode that much?!

As for graphics, honestly who really gives a damn regarding Socom, it's always been functional and that's that, but at least the maps are massive and now support 32 players online this time. Framerate is more of an issue.

Disagree strongly about single player (worse than S2 in a lot of ways, imo) but yeah, multiplayer rocks. The graphics could (should?) be better and the framerate dips, but for intense 32 player matches (w/ voice) it's well worth it.

You were playing Halo 2 with over 16 players?

Um, GR and Halo 2 NEVER had more than 16 players.........

The only Xbox games I can think of with more than 16 players are SW:Battlefront and Black Hawk Down.
