Soldier investigated for bragging about not saluting the flag on Facebook

Fuckwits are all over the military. I've heard far worse stories that go unpunished.

They just aren't postable to social media.

I will never, nor will I let anyone I love, go into the US Military. Be it Navy, Army, or Air Force.

Maybe except Coast Guard. Because I've heard no horror stories from them and it seems like they do very little day to day.

Oh definitely. If you're outside and you get caught out there when the music starts, you stay there and do your thing. It's cheesy and wrong to try to run and duck inside somewhere. But the article says if you're in your car you're supposed to stop the car and get out to salute. That has not been my experience in my 20 year Naval career.

Most Army bases have you stop your car, get out and salute, then get back in. I think some bases have been changing this, but I have been stationed on two where this is the case. But yes, Navy bases just sit at attention.

Sure, everyone's done it, even me( on occasion, not all the time, and it usually had to do with me carrying a bunch of stuff) but on top of posting to the world about it, she generally sounds like she proud of getting over everyone.

The post of her bragging about doing nothing all day for tax payer money is worse. Her general shitty attitude is a huge problem for her army career. Not that she gives a fuck.

Oh absolutely, The bragging about it on Facebook is the thing they want stopped. I was not a good soldier. I was in trouble more often than not. Never anything serious, and I had a protected job (my training pipeline was almost 3 years with a greater than 50% washout rate) so I could get away with more than most. Even still I knew better than to advertise my laziness/lack of respect to the world. One time I just didn't go to work for a week. I think I got a LoR for that, I still made sergeant that year though.

No but the chances of her moving up in rank are probably put on hold for a year. Depending of how long she has been in the Army at her current rank, that can be career ending if she's close to high-year tenure.

I agree , but in this day in age it may depend on how much this takes off, if it goes viral it may be example making time to soothe the masses.

What exactly was the reaction she was expecting when she posted this? Praise from random people? Praise from her military peers? Her higher ups being so shocked and impressed by her challenge that they'd have no choice to promote her? What was the goal with this whole flippant attitude? Some people...

Garrison is an incredibly easy job as well. When i was in, i just looked at it as showing respect.

What does it involve? I Googled but didn't see any simple summaries.

Edit: Another thing...I see stories of people getting disapproving looks from higher-ups for avoiding the salute. Doesn't this potentially jeopardize your advancement? I am about as unpatriotic as a civilian could get, but I'd salute if it meant staying in good graces with the brass.

She didn't salute the flag...no big deal. But bragging about it on social media..lol have fun with your article 15. Hope you didn't mean for the Army to be a career.

Oh come on, two years in prison for not saluting a flag? Meanwhile rapes and sexual assaults in the military go unpunished.

Inexcusable.

the two years is maximum sentence. Basically a maximum sentence is saying it would be cruel to punish them more than that. Very few people ever get a maximum sentence.

I understand where you are coming from and the military really needs to change their policies on rape and sexual assault, but you are comparing two different things here.

A rape conviction in the military carries a maximum sentence of death.

It is clearly impossible to for fight for a country you love and for the shared ideals it's citizens believes in without arbitrarily gesturing at a lifeless piece of cloth.

I mean, if she's already questioning this, will she also question immoral orders given to her by her superiors? She doesn't cut the mustard and must receive a dishonorable discharge for this insubordination.

What exactly does this ceremony entail? I notice a lot of current and former military folks talking about the lengths people go to to avoid it.

It's an interruption to your day when you're already trying to get shit over with. Imagine if you had to do a moment of silence every day at 5:00 PM. No matter what you're doing, you gotta stop. If you're having a conversation, stop that. If you're driving a car, stop that. If you're jerking off, stop that. If you're trying to send your last email of the day so that you can go get on the freeway and drive home, stop that. Now sit there for a bit. Now you can go back to whatever you were doing. Every day. Because of reasons. Look, I fought, bled, did all that shit. I was a good Marine. While this sort of stuff seems like it builds cohesion in the ranks, it was really just another one of those pains in the ass we put up with because we had no other choice but to put on the air of discipline, regardless of whether or not it made us better human beings.

What's gonna get her, though, is throwing that she doesn't give a shit (even if everyone else doesn't give a shit) in the brass' face. The one thing they cannot and will not tolerate is someone who is not only non-compliant, but who is a smartass about being non-compliant, and who is furthermore a smartass about being non-compliant publicly. She's in the United States Army... not on Private Benjamin or STRIPES. She doesn't have the freedom to be a jackass on Instagram, and they're going to make that very clear to her and everyone else.

Air(chair) Force ain't about that time wasting life. Basically if you were in your car you gotta pull over but not get out. If you were outside you had to stand and salute. That's it. No stopping work, no going outside to salute, no getting out of your car.

Ok Mlitarygaf real talk, how many of us have dodged the 1700 retreat flag salute by making sure we just happened to be inside a building? I certainly have, so has everyone else I know who has been in. I'm just flabbergasted that this junior soldier is this fuckinng stupid, if you want the money (and making money is stupidly easy while in uniform) you play the game. Especially nowadays with all the downsizing, the first soldiers getting kicked out or denied reenlistment are going to be problem soldiers like her. ]

Yeah it's pretty common, I've done it numerous times just never posted about it or had the ability to post about it.

Soldiers discussing how stupid this lady was for talking about avoiding the salute on social media, while also talking about how they avoided the salute on social media

As for the story, of course the lady was dumb for posting about something that could get her fired/jailed, but you can pencil me into the "fuck nationalism" column here.

My wife is currently Active Duty in the Army. She got in in, 2005. They used to just have everyone stop their cars but a few years back they changed it to have all Soldiers get out and salute. At Ft. Hood they even went as far as to have MP's go out a few minutes before and block the major roads to FORCE people to stop. They also keep an eye out for any soldiers not getting out of their vehicles and saluting.

Jesus, fuck being stationed there. That would tempt me not to to reup even if nothing else did. One more way being out in the boonies is better.

The military takes that stuff very seriously. That's no secret. It's a job, you volunteered. If you can't deal with the rules then you shouldn't have signed up in the first place.

We're no longer there but there were positives and negatives to the place and like any duty station. What I absolutely miss about Hood is the options of things to do and places to go. Being an hour from Austin is a big plus.

Yeah, true enough. I may be looking back with rose tinted glasses too, I got out a long time ago.

Good. She deserves to be punished with that kind of attitude; I'm wary of any soldier not willing to honor the flag.

Be wary of me :) I dodged out of that when I could. I didn't brag about it though.

Exactly.

I'm all for social disruption and fighting the power when it's in service some greater good.

But breaking the rules of an institution you willingly signed up for, and for no other reason than some YOLO/Instagram foolishness? Nah, can't cosign that shit. She brought it on herself.

I think a good dodging the 5pm flag salute thing equivalent for civilians would be.. browsing the internet for personal reasons at work. Everyone does it, I bet half of gaf posts are done from work and I bet your boss is checking his/her stocks right now at their office. It isn't that big of a deal, but don't brag about it on facebook. Don't brag that you are getting paid decent money to post on gaf -__-

Stuff on the internet gets out, the higher ups get angey cus it makes their company look like chumps; they bitch at your supervisor who honestly doesn't give a shit but shit rolls downhill all the way down to you.

She is a Shammer and a Shitbag, tons of people like this at my Base (Fort Irwin). everyone dodges the flag sometimes, you just dont brag about it (especially in Units that are very strict).

She is definitely not gonna rank up beyond Specialist (E-4), i would be suprised if she makes it beyond Private First Class (E-3) at the rate she is going.

Living in Colorado Springs, she's clearly an idiot for posting this. I don't think this is anything more than really bad judgement from a solider, and I find that other solider with the funeral comments far more offensive.

This solider did what many, many other soldiers have done, but was just stupid enough to brag about it.
