I was gonna say it's Metal Gear Solid, so obviously it's Solid Snake. But then I remembered that in Metal Gear Solid 2 the main character was

And Big Boss is so relevant to the story. I really don't know. But I still voted Solid Snake in honor of the legendary MGS1 where he was the clear main character..

Big Boss has been in more games I actually like (MGS3, Peace Walker, and MGSV). MG1 on the NES was a butchered port (but I probably would have liked it more if it had been more complete), only sorta liked MGS1 (I found it kinda short at the time), and you don't get to play as solid snake throughout the whole game in MGS2 (obviously), and I never played MGS4.

Solid Snake is the intended main character of the franchise, but the enduring popularity of Big Boss post-MGS3 has given him less of the spotlight over the years.

Doesn't help to be victim of one of the most controversial bait-and-switches in gaming history either.

The Boss is the original Messiah of the series.
On a large scale i consider Zero as relevant as Big Boss to the story.
The Patriots, Fox, etc. evolved along the times. Zero and Big Boss started together and ended up against each other even if they were manipulating things in the background.

I doubt Portable Ops is canon since is not directed by Kojima like Metal Gear 1 and 2.
Even if there is Raiden and Venom IMO Kojima sees MGS like this:

Solid Snake - 1, 2 and 4
Big Boss - 3, PW and V

Similar to George Lucas's Star Wars movies with 3 prequels.

I still think Solid Snake is the main character. The "retcon" prequels are not enough for me to think otherwise.
For me MGS is the story of Solid Snake overcoming his origins and building his own legacy. He wasn't even the better clone, but he never got corrupted.

- original Metal Gear game
- original Metal Gear Solid game
- Metal Gear Solid sequel
- Metal Gear Solid second sequel that finishes the story

It is Solid Snake.

The two prequels with Big Boss/Venom are great, but he is a secondary protagonist and semi-primary antagonist of the saga.

You forgot Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. I'm not sure if I would say that he is the main character in Metal Gear Solid 2.

Fair, but personally eventhough Raiden is playable protag for larger part of the game, to me he always felt kinda sidekicky to Snake.
