Some bands just "get it" when it comes to covers

Now here's an awesome cover of the same song.

The Final Countdown
Yeah, I've had that cover on my computer for a few years now.

I absolutely love oddball covers. And it happens to be an oddball cover of one of my favorite songs. Sadly, Total Eclipse of the Heart's covers aren't nearly as satisfying, although the one by The Dan Band that showed up on Old School is pretty awesome.

You know they didn't do that. It was some other band (Norther maybe?) Or was that what the wink was for.

Yesh. I think Dispatched's version was the original one I came across incorrectly attributed to CoB as I was hunting down every single cover of Final Countdown I could come across.

Judas Priest - Diamonds and Rust

I think this is one of the best examples of a great cover, its completely different from the Joan Baez. Unleashed from the East version is the best.

Hendrix' cover became more definitive than the original so people forget it's even a cover.

The iTunes download of Green Day's new album came with a cover of "A Quick One While He's Away". Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Covers that are considered to be the definitive version:

Sinead O'Conner - Nothing Compares 2 U
Nilseon - Without You
Jeff Buckley - Halluja
Ray Charlies - Georgia on my Mind
Jimi Hindrix - All along the watch tower
Quiet Riot - Come On Feel the Noise
Gary Tules - Mad World
The Animals - House of the Rising Sun
The Animals - Please Don't Let me Be Misunderstood
Cream - Crossroads
Whitney Houston - I will Always Love You
The Kingsmen - Louie Louie
Janis Joplin - Me and Bobby McGee
Sid Vicious - My Way
Elvis Costello - What's SO Funny about Peace Love and Understanding
Ike and Tina - Proud Mary
Urge Overkill - Girl, you will be a woman soon
Nirvania - Man Who Sold the World / Lake of Fire
Faith No More - Easy (fun version)
The Clash - I fought the Law (Chris' opinion)
Run DMC - Walk this Way
Elvis Preisley
Joe Cocker - With a Little Help from my Friends
The Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man
Joan Jett - I Love and Roll
Joan Jett - Do You Wanna Touch Me
10,000 Maniacs - Because the Night
David Bowie - China Girl
Eric Clapton - Cocaine
Stevie Wonder - For Once in My Life
Black Crows - Hard to Handle
Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe
Bow wow wow - I want Candy
Nazereth - Love Hurts
UB40 - Red Red Wine
CCR - Susie Q
The Byrds - Turn, Turn, Turn
The Beatles - Twist and Shout
The Troggs - Wild Thing
James Taylor - You've Got A Friend

i enjoy a good cover song when it is done well, but i agree some bands just RUIN songs.

example: counting crows version of big yellow taxi.

It is the only song I can think of that makes me want to kill.

FYI, that was a list that a group of friends of mine came up with. I probably would only go out of my way and listen to probably a quarter of those songs.

Melvins have done a bunch of awesome covers:-

-Sacrifice (Flipper)
-Way of the World (Flipper)
-The Ballad Of Dwight Fry (Alice Cooper)
-God Of Thunder (KISS)
-Going Blind (KISS)
-DCH (Cream)
-Today Your Love, Tomorrow The World (Ramones)
-Ramblin' Man (Hank Williams)
-Lexicon Devil (Germs)
-Dies Iraea (Cover of The Shining theme)
-With Yo' Heart, Not Yo' Hands (Malfunkshun)
-Interstellar Overdrive (Pink Floyd)

Also, there are three amazing covers of their songs by other bands: Strapping Young Lad covered 'Zodiac', Mastadon did 'The Bit', and Dillinger Escape Plan did 'Honey Bucket'.

When I was younger and in high school, I used to like punk. "Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies" were a good punk cover band made up of musicians from various bands including NOFX. I haven't listened to that since I was 14/15 though. Man ... I'm double that now. :lol

I always liked Stevie Ray Vaughn's cover of Jimmie's "Little Wing" better then the original. I like Jimmies cover of "All Along the Watchtower" better then the original as well. I won't bother mentioning the Dream Theater covers as they've already been mentioned numerous times.

With the exception of a few gems, most songs are better in their original state.
