Sonic Lost World |OT| Too X-treme for the Galaxy

After playing this for a short time yesterday, I'm afraid this will be a huge disaster. Maybe not sales-wise, of course. But the gameplay sucked so much that I was in shock. The game mostly played itself and when it did not, I felt like all the auto-aim and auto-direction was destroying all the effort I put into the controls.

Edit: Wii U version

I have played the game for almost 40 hours and of course cannot go into detail (still embargo), but this is just bs. The game does absolutely not play itself. This is bs for all the previous Sonic games (bar Sonic Black Knight) and definitely (if you are opposed to strictly linear level design - even morseso than for the other games) for Sonic Lost World, too. There are some speed boosters and you can use the homing attack but this doesn't make the game play itself. Even on some more "automated" (as in on-rails) levels like the second level of the final world you still have full control. In fact, I hope you try time attack for aforementioned second level of the final world, this will show you how ignorant it is to say that Sonic Lost World plays itself.

Regarding the gameplay style: I'm still sad that they chose this "momentum" (as in slow) approach instead of trying to maximise the speed found in Sonic Generations (while of course making the S-ranks much, much harder, Generations was way too easy). This is not to comment on the quality of Sonic Lost World which I am of course not allowed to, just a personal preference, because precision based platforming is something Mario will always do better than Sonic, whereas Sonic built his own (awesome) adrenaline-driven identity starting with Sonic Unleashed.

5 years ago Dimps were the top of the food chain, now after Sonic 4 they are now considered shit.

People seem to forget Colors DS exists and is essentially Rush 3, Rush was critically acclaimed (at least be the press, I recall the 90 from IGN).

I would like for Dimps to conceptualize their own 3D Sonic, Lost World 3DS is their first, but it's a companion to the Sonic Team-created game, not Dimps' from the ground-up

...

Unless the Wii U version is a Wii U companion to Dimps own 3DS Sonic game, DUN DUN DUUUUUUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rush was good but actually 8 years ago (/feel old), while Colours and Generations on handhelds were already too shallow.

There's still time to delay it and announce versions for other platforms that will all release next year at the same time as the Wii U and 3DS versions during the same week as Titanfall.

Didn't stop Ubisoft, certainly didn't stop Warner Bros.

Still have a digital review copy of Scribblenauts Unlimited on my Wii U from a year ago, game still isn't released, lol.

Nintendo is struggling for 3rd party support yet when it does arrive it does nothing to help advertise these exclusives. Game is out friday yet there is no demo, no nintendo direct, and no confirmation if it sucks or not.
Given how quiet nintendo and sega are being about the game i'm very very worried.
when does the embargo end?

On friday. As a Sonic-fan who liked all of the recent Sonic platformer games with the exception of Sonic Black Knight I can tell you that I don't think it sucks.

Well in that case I'm curious why the demo they displayed on the expo didn't include some of the interesting gameplay - although I only played two out of four levels, chosen randomly. All I can recall from that experience (apart from a short pinball-like section) was holding forward to win with an occasional jump to avoid obstacles or enemies, and, in the slower parts, being constantly navigated where I didn't intend to ngo by the homing attacks or automatic changes of direction. On top of that, neither the platforming or the movement seemed to be particularly precise.

Of course, my view may change a lot when I play the game for a longer time. I remember hating Secret Rings the first time I played it. Later, as Sonic gained new abilities, it became gradually more fun. Still, after my experience of Lost World I know that I won't give it another chance until it's very cheap. And even if it's a good game in the end, it's definitely not what I first hoped for it to be - a 3D platformer comparable to the old 2D Sonic games like the modern 3D marios are to the old 2D Mario games.

So no reviews before then. I'm stuck on the fence with this one. I like the look of it but Sonic has a history of bad 3D games.

I disagree on the notion that Sonic has a history of bad 3D games (even though there are some, notably Shadow, 2006 and Black Knight), but if you didn't like Unleashed, Colours or Generations, this doesn't say anything about this new game, because it's very different (obvious by the videos).

Yes I know and as I said I really like the look of this game and think it looks fantastic on the wii u. I just dont like the fact that the west has had no demo and reviews are not allowed to go before Friday.

11 Days after Europe......WHY?!!!

Can someone clarify if all pre-orders include the Deadly Six Edition content? I was going to take a wait and see approach with this game, but I'm a sucker for all things NiGHTS (yes, even the often maligned Journey of Dreams). I'm strongly considering nabbing the game at launch now.

So you played the casino level and the first level of the game? Both are quite straight forward, the casino level of course likes to send you in directions you don't want to take, because it's a casino... However, regarding homing attack: The game shows you where the homing attack goes. If you just want to do a double jump, press B instead of A.

This isn't too strange, Nintendo usually puts Embargos on the day the game gets released in the first region. I don't think this is a sign that Nintendo thinks the game sucks.

so the embargo ends the day it releases, i'm glad i cancelled my pre-order.
nothing like a confident developer!
I'm happy you like the game, but your clearly a 3d sonic fan so i'll need to see a few more impressions before i jump in.
The only recent 3d game i liked was colors, and even that had a lot of problems.

I won't be getting this if it doesn't get pro controller support. The tacked on wisp controls are perfectly doable on a normal controller. I know it isn't planned now, so I won't get it until it's patched.

Anyway, that said, I'm not extremely impressed with this game. I think it's a step in the right direction, while I thought Unleashed was not. Reworking 'boost' into a new movement system is great, but it's still lacking momentum. It's either fast or slow. That isn't good. Speed should be a risk and reward, not just an option.

I can't wait to see where the next game takes them. I really hope they tweak and refine this because there is so much that this game seems to do right.

Really? Pokemon, Pikmin 3 and the Wonderful 101 all had reviews a few days before the actual release date.

Well at least you gave a warning instead of just throwing the link out there.
Can't believe these guy are still doing that shtick...

I can't stand listening to them for more then 30 seconds but I thought others might be interested. The best thing they have going is they keep getting away with breaking the review embargo date.

Have people been sleeping the last three years?
He did say great, not mediocre or good.
I think the majority of people are still waiting for the the first great 3d sonic game, colors was heading in the right direction but still wasn't quite there yet.

If there had been a demo or reviews before release I would have pre ordered, I don't get why company's embargo reviews until release day as it just makes me think somethings wrong with it. Are you allowed to say wether you think its worth pre ordering or I should wait for the demo/reviews?

We might get one on Thursday, but I'm not getting my hopes up. It's almost as if Capcom & Nintendo don't want people to know this is actually coming out.

I think you are a bit confused here, or there's some news I have not heard. Capcom have nothing to do with this game, its a Sega game.

I have it pre-ordered because it looks interesting and fun from all the levels I have seen but have a bad feeling about it because of the embargo that seems like its lifting on launch day. I never trust them when they do it, screams of middling to bad reviews that they know about and are trying to hide.

But after the whole Wonderful 101 review rubbish my distrust of reviewers has extended even more so I ignore most of them anyway :p

Jim Sterling has tweeted in the past about it swinging wildly from brilliance to utter crap, hoping that the good parts outweigh the bad parts! (so far, that silly snowball rolling section we have seen from the videos looks a bit like a crappy part)

Most of their reviews seem 'fake' though. I don't think they actually have the game.

Yep, they're fake.

They did a "review" on Lego City undercover, but instead of using actual footage, they just recycled stuff from previous trailers for the game, and when asked to explain certain things they would say they will, but never actually did it.

They're doing it for views and subscriptions, I'm sure.

I don't know if I'm allowed to say that, but I don't think I'm saying too much if I say: Since it isn't of the quality of Mario Galaxy, it depends on what you want from the game. You won't get a game that takes Sonic Generations and improves on everything. Instead the game has a new premise, which is apparent by the videos. If you like that approach, I can tell you I've played the game for almost 40 hours and I wouldn't do that with a game I don't like. It certainly wouldn't be necessary to play it for that amount of time just to write a fair review.

the deadly six content stuff (i havent looked into it much) is NiGHTS related?

An example of what momentum should do in Lost World:

sonicslide2augu.gif

That is footage from Smash Bros. In the actual game he just stops on a dime no matter how fast you are going. Details like that make a difference.

Sometimes companies are just overly-cautious jerks.

Arkham Asylum had some really kind of suspicious stuff going on with the way Eidos was handling embargoes and that game turned out great.

Assassin's Creed II was embargoed right up until release and it was incredible.

Not to say that will be the case with Sonic, but a marketing arm does not always decide things like this based on the quality of the game.

Personally, I did not like Rush at all. It was boring and forgettable. It felt like I was just holding left and boosting through each level with no challenge.

What rankings did you get? This is like saying "I played this racing game and I did reach the goal without ever using any tricks at all, it's almost as if it played itself" when you just reached the goal as the last driver, after having been pushed back onto the course several times.

Awwww yeah! Can't wait. My most anticipated game for the rest of the year no question. Looks fantastic. Nice to see we're getting a great Sonic platformer again, not a glorified racer with platforming elements. To be fair Colours already did that, though the platforming was limited to the 2D sections. Sadly Generations was a step backwards. This looks much better than Colours and the 3D gameplay looks better than ever. Looks really varied with its stages too and seems to mix the gameplay up nicely. Yes that includes the snowball level. A really interesting unique stage with some challenge to it as well. I'm glad the game has recieved a difficulty bump over the last couple games. Levels like that are just what this game needs.

I don't even have time to wait for it but now I realized it's coming this week.
Got it for 20€ but I still hope it won't be a bad surprise.
I was in for exploration and the red rings in colors (aquatic park!), so here it should be fine, transposing the density of the 2d sections in 3d thanks to the tube levels, I just hope the 2d parts remain as rich cause they seems lighter so far even the whole sidescrolling levels like that wool one.
