The Good: Very fast; trick system is a neat idea; great music.
The Bad: Not enough differences between the two playable characters; blind jumps and sudden enemy placement force you to memorize level designs in some spots.

Sonic Rush is a great Sonic the Hedgehog game that modernizes the old 2D formula a bit, though without losing what made those games so cool in the first place. While the action between the two characters isn't necessarily different enough to warrant playing through the game twice, anyone looking for a good, strong platformer should have fun with this one.

I haven't understood all the praise Sonic Rush has been getting. I wasn't overly impressed at E3, nor when I saw the game again a couple weeks ago.

It certainly never felt BAD... but it didn't seem... I dunno... overly praiseworthy, either. Don't understand why editors have kept hyping it.

fine by me.

blind jumps and sudden enemy placement force you to memorize level designs in some spots.
Just like in every other sonic. :)

To me this seems like a much more reasonable review than IGN's 'best Sonic evar!' hyperbole.

It seems like this is on par with (or slightly better than) the best of the Sonic Advance's on the GBA.

I think everyone's just thankful it's not Shadow. So basically up until Shadow gets released every Sega game that isn't shadow gets a +1 on its score.

So.... best Sonic evar!

WTF? Why is that a bad thing? It's like classic Sonic at last. It's no longer a racing game.

I don't believe it... so forcing you to memorize levels is a BAD thing??? If you want to be good at a platformer that's nearly essential and the most important aspect of a speedrun if you ask me.

that doesn't seem like a fair reason to dock the game. All 2d platformers rely on memorization to a large degree. it's a key ingredient of a good 2d platformer... it sort of sounds like they are docking it for difficulty... another key ingredient.

this and mario kart are making me crave a DS.

That's a bad thing in racing games, too. I mean, a good game shouldn't force you to remember trivial crap like track design and maps.

Of course it's bad in racing games, but this isn't a racing game. Did you hate Sonic 1-3?

R-Type says 'hi'. Take your rollercoster ride style gaming back to the ps2 =)

This might be the last DS game (... er, new game in general) I get this year. I have pretty much every game I bought a DS for now, and it sure does make me happy!

You've gotten more subtle since you've been here... truly an accomplishment!

Just don't end up like poor Heidern :(

how is track design trivial?

I'm going to guess this is in between GS and IGN's reviews, more towards IGN because of idiotic crap like this:

blind jumps and sudden enemy placement force you to memorize level designs in some spots.

Yes, the same thing happened in the Genesis Sonic games. You weren't supposed to run through the stage for the first time fast as hell. You go through it, explore, finish it, and then you can rush through it.

I agree. Craig's review was much more informative about the game's ups and downs. I'm going to go by that.
