Voila!. Tomoya's beats have been part of what's redefined Sonic music lately, and it all started in the SA2 Knuckles levels. If all of the beats were instrumentals, untainted by bothersome bad lyrics (excepting Pumpkin Hill, because it's so bad), then I could rate the soundtrack more closely to SA1's. Listen to those acoustic colors amidst the synth and electric guitars!

Though I have to admit that I don't really like the mixing when it's clear that they mixed away the "death chamber" lyrics... because you can still hear it, lol. I don't think the lyrics are horrible. :p However, I owe that perspective to having done classical vocal music for years, and I generally prefer stuff that isn't musical theatre/opera or the conservatory stuff that I had to sing. :D

The uploader explicitly stated that this was the only track he was able to filter the vocals out of, and even then I can still hear the "death chamber" chorus in the background, much like the female vocals in Rouge's stage themes (and I think that sounds better anyhow, with these misty vocals in the background, augmenting the fire-crackle snare drumming for that great smokey feel). I can see where you come from with that statement regarding the lyrics, actually.
 
I remember this game. Didn't you also had a sequel but ended up scrapping it and released the source TGF file of its engine?


EDIT: That reminds me, I've recently found my old shitty Sonic fangame (known as Sonic 2k4).

Jesus... the graphics were so awful. lol The awful gradients in the HUD. The pointless "AIR" hud and really awful looking tiles.

Hough, that HUD brings back memories of my own fangame. I started working on it when I was 15 or 16 and refused to let the project go until two or three years ago (it's a long, annoying story, but let's just say it was one of those situations where I couldn't see the forest for the trees). I should probably tell Moddb to close down my mod profile.

Of course, I haven't been able to get away from making Sonic fangames... I still want to do at least one before I try and "get serious" about game development. I actually need to get off my ass and get back to it, with the holidays I was too busy but now that those are done...

Edit: I also guess it's worth mentioning I'm the weirdo who did this.
 
IMO, Secret Rings's OST is pretty underrated. I accuse myself of doing this becuase I only listened to about the first 2 or 3 level tracks and found it pretty bleh; It wasn't until watching a stream of the game where they were in the later levels that I dug up the OST on YouTube again and really dug it.

i completely forgot secret rings and black knight even existed.

I think I liked most of the OST, but you get sick of MAKE BELIEVE REBORN being drilled into your head when actually trying to play the game.

I wouldn't go quite that far, but it really is surprisingly lame.

I know a lot of people counter that with "But it gets awesome later once you have enough skills" but it takes a lot of work to get to that point and... bleh

I tried...I tried so damn hard, but I never finished Sonic 06. I mean, FUCK, I even downloaded a save with the last chapter and I lost patience because it was so insanely frustrating.

06 is a fucking abomination of a game. Some kind of weak disformed foetus that came out of SEGA too soon.

It still baffles me that the Wii team managed to go from making Black Knight to making Colors. I'd love to hear the internal discussion at Sega around that time to find out just what prompted the change in direction, and how they managed to abruptly pull a rock solid concept out of their hats after so long.

The Fated Hour, yeah. I had just replayed Chrono Trigger for my second time ever and one of the last saves before fighting Lavos is called "The Fated Hour"

I was like "Yeaaaaah! That sounds badass!"

Ah, to be in high school again.

Man, RAGE (the Really Amateur Gaming Expo, not id's latest) is so much fun. I should probably enter into the next Pirate Kart, assuming Glorious Trainwrecks are doing that again this year.

I really couldn't stand all the ring collecting missions, be perfect missions, and the weird race the ball thing missions. This is my list of the worst main console Sonic games.

1. Sonic and the Secret Rings
2. Sonic 2006
3. Shadow The Hedgehog
4. Sonic 3D Blast for Genesis
5. Sonic Unleashed
 
Don't forget this gem. Even with the crazy variation SA1's ost had, entering that room and listening to this caught me off guard. It's just... so out there, my young ears had never heard such a weird music track at the time. Pretty catchy though.

I swear everytime I listen to this I start laughing. 0:55 is the best piece, that "dan. dan." is superb.

Green Hill Zone is just pure garbage. No, not even garbage. At least you can say Nocturne comes from that particular stage.. if you made me listen to Chronicles' GHZ you'd only get a blank stare.

Sounds like it. Wasn't there a problem with music licensing, or something? Still, it's no excuse to have music as bad as this in your video game (though there was no excuse to have a battle system as bad as what was in Chronicles, either.)
 
I don't think anyone would even notice the music at the final battle of that game because you have to be 100% focused on the millions of buttons you have to tap or else you lose. At least thats how it went for me.

My understanding is that there were licensing issues with the music very very late into production. So, instead of delaying it to have a proper soundtrack composed, they took a bunch of fan-made MIDIs off the Internet, figuring that Sega owned the rights to the music anyway, and shoehorned them into the game (very shoddily).

Although I still can't tell what MIDI Green Hill Zone was supposed to be of.

As far as cleansing palates goes, how about what Nocturne SHOULD have sounded like? Still probably the best final boss music in video gaming. (Also, the fairly excellent Generations 3DS version.)
 
Y'know, it took me over a decade to realize that the Sonic 3 file select theme is basically going for a kind of Italian musical style, but with a drum beat. I can't really place the genre, but I mean, I frequently think of that old Disney song, "Belle Notte", if that helps any (different tune, of course, but same kind of genre).

Wonder if there are any remixes/arrangements that take that motif and run with it?
 
I have always loved the sms sonic 1 and 2 music, sky base, scrap brain, bridge zone, the bonus stage music. Best music of my childhood.
