Sonic the Hedgehog Community Thread |OT3 & Knuckles|

Need to make a hard decision: to drop the Sonic Mania collectors edition or not.

$40 extra is hard pill to swallow. Had been hoping they would have dropped the price.

Double-check it's still that. At one point the price dropped, and the Amazon pre-order protection kicked in for me, so it dropped down to $44.89 and stayed there on my order.

Is it weird that I'm excited for Mania just because of the killer music and beautiful sprites? Like I'm not even a Sonic fan but I still wanna play the game?

Well, I've had Studiopolis on loop for roughly the past 10 minutes, so....

First game in a long while where the pre-release hype cycle has finally consumed me. My fighting game friends are already talking about setting up side-tournaments and money matches in Mania's VS mode for our local events lol.

Will probably do a run-through stream of the classic games the day before this one drops.

Sonic Retro forums are leaving me in despair.

So, it's one thing to criticize the bits of soundtrack that have been released so far. Some folks don't like the music, fair's fair. Different strokes and all that.

It's one thing to contemplate on how the soundtrack will jive with the game itself. Some folks don't think this is what a sequel to the 16-bit games should sound like. Fine, whatever.

It's a whole 'nother ballgame with comments like "I'm going to play the game with the sound off" and particularly "it was a bad marketing decision to release music tracks out of context" where people are seemingly unable to enjoy/discuss the music in and of itself (generally the point of releasing bits of a media's soundtrack prior to release like, say, tons of other movies and games) and instead have to fly off this deep end and reach obnoxious conclusions without even having played the damn game!

Like, I'm sure I'm overreacting to a bunch of silly comments.

But still.

Fuck.

Eh, take it with a grain of salt, really.

Although I'll admit the one dude who seemed to think preordering digital meant you're penalizing yourself because they'd snail mail the code to you and you'd get it a few days after release went a tad beyond simply amusing.

Nothing weird about it; you found a game that has elements that appeal to you. The gameplay is bound to impress you for its simple concept and overall stage design.

Sonic forums are leaving me in despair because They keep talking about how forces looks like crap, and I agree and I want to see good in this game but every single piece of interview and media that comes out about this game keeps confirming my fears about the franchise in general

Fixed for how I feel

Sonic Retro forums are leaving me in despair. (...)

I learned not long after the Sonic 4 insanity to never, ever read Sonic Retro's general discussion threads. There was one specific thread not long after the Sonic 4 "event", I think it was about the Sonic Adventure games, and I voiced my opinion on something -- I don't even necessarily think I was being negative, but I don't remember. What I DO remember is being shouted down and basically told to fuck off for saying what I felt was something pretty harmless either way. I definitely left that thread feeling like the response I got was massively out of proportion for what I had said, whatever it was (this was like five or six years ago, minimum)

These were not isolated incidents, and smaller things here and there over the years have definitely given the place a mildly hostile feeling. I don't envy the moderator staff there, knowing some of the history behind the posters that call Sonic Retro home.

I know Tim posts here (he's a moderator/admin there), and I've never quite been able to feel out exactly how much he's okay with my complaints about the forums -- but yeah. I wouldn't go there for reasonable discussion, especially not when the bees are buzzing as loudly as they are around the release of a new Sonic game that dares impugn on the purity of the classic games. That's not an abyss you want to stare back at you.

I go to Sonic Retro to keep up on user-made projects in the hacking and fangaming subforums and beyond that I am a ghost. Any more than that and I fear being eaten alive by the swarm.

Don't let them get you down.

Hey hi :V

Was never a mod/admin, but "site staff" which more meant that I wrote for the site. I don't think I remember ever really thinking your posts were bad. The Retro community in general is now really obnoxious and hostile though. So much so that I've just kinda stopped bothering with the site.

Oh, whao, yikes.
Weren't the staff there trying to 'open' the community up to newcomers more to help against the kind of insular atmosphere?

Doubt Retro's quirks are specific to that kind of franchise though. At least Sonic has a reasonable amount of news to go around at the moment — some of the franchises that are near death, and still try to keep a community going, can have real boilerplates of activity, and discussions can get wild a result.

Well, more than that, but they let people get away with way too much shit there. In their Off-Topic equivalent, there are rampant numbers of extreme right-wing disingenuous nutjobs that GAF moderation would've banned in an instant, yet Retro moderation just hems and haws about them, maybe doing a three-day ban in an egregious case. On a blue moon. When it's raining. While the sun's out. And there's a double rainbow. Which pigs are flying toward.

As far as the Mania complaints go, they tend to come up with the stupidest shit. People complaining that Tails making a strained face when lifting up Sonic while flying as looking like "a creepy smile", going as far as editing that face onto his standing sprite to prove their point (even though that's not the context the face was made for). People complaining about the plumbing in Flying Battery's background. At least one person complaining that some of the graphics in the game used "MSPaint White" (sorry graphic artists, #FFFFFF is forever verboten). One guy was even adamant that the fact the game was fanmade was inherently a deal-breaker.

I don't know why I still go there. Once upon a time it'd have been because Strife tends to post his Freedom Planet updates in there, but that hasn't been the case in a good while.

Shadow's not so bad, I like it and think its fun to blow through.

Some of the mission are crappy and I refuse to play them but theres a few good paths through the game where the story kind of works and you get to do the easy ones. If the game just had 5 paths instead of that weird mission thing it'd work alot better. Having a mission tracker would help too because most of the missions aren't as much of a hassle after you know where everything is.

I think the handling is really interesting what with the handbrake button and the flip jumps you can do. It gives you a weird extra level of control that 3D sonic usually doesn't and there's lots of cool little tricks you can pull.

That is the opposite of what I expected to hear about them. Probably for the best I never really tried to do anything there beyond use the wiki.

Because of course this is a thing on a gaming website.

To be fair, I do agree with the notion that those sprites didn't do the best job at expressing what they were supposed to, and IIRC, the dev team has since nixed them anyway, so I think they agreed to some level. A bit of a shame though, since the face was pretty entertaining when the expression was understood.

But yeah, something something Flying Battery backgrounds.

Damn, I used to regard the Retro community as one of the better parts of the fandom. This is actually disappointing.

Sooooo... Sonic Mania's street date (the Switch version only, apparently) has been broken!? Yikes.

Is this thread gonna be safe from spoilers or am I going to have to straight-up stay away from any Sonic-related threads?

Yeah. I haven't visited the forums in a few years so I guess it's gone downhill. It's a shame, really. Their wiki and the threads for fan games and hacks are still worthwhile at least.

I've happily watched all the trailers SEGA have shown off officially but I'm genuinely looking forward to being surprised. I think I'm fine here on GAF as the leaks should be contained to the leak thread. Does anyone know how I could clear up my YouTube though because I use it a lot and don't want a recommended video to be a Mania level, boss or secret that isn't known.

I ran into this a bit with Breath of the Wild with me being a week late to the party. Fortunately it wasn't anything super special, just weapon and armour spoilers to start with. Now my recommends are flooded with Zelda crap.

Standing policy on this is to be considerate and keep spoilers in the leak thread. However, it's the internet (even on GAF) and all it takes is one person to slip up. If you really care, godspeed at avoiding everything on YT/Twitter as well and I'll see you in a week. :'(

Yeah, I'm not using youtube/twitter till I finish Mania. I trust this thread (and GAF in general) but I'm probably still gonna stay away for the most part and peek with one eye open lol.

I've seriously never felt this level of nostalgia for maybe anything before. I've been confused with people saying things like "muh childhood!" and stuff in the past but I now relate. It feels so surreal to know that THE sequel to my favorite game of all time is so close.

Mania seems a bit too... pop art ish? I dunno, I never liked that style of sonic much so it's kinda sad people are ok with 3D going to shit.

Modern Sonic is more 'Modern pop' far as Japan goes.
I really like the classic pop style they're going for.
I need this game already aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh.

I like the idea of Sega Japan still chasing their "deep, serious" stories, but Sega America and Europe creating retro-inspired Sonic, which is better-favored here. Release both in both regions. They can co-exist.

The problem is that Iizuka's going to want control over the direction of the retro-themed games too, when that's been the problem to begin with.

So I accidentally clicked on a poorly-labeled trailer for Sonic 4 Episode 1 the other day, and it was physically painful to watch. Like you forget how completely AWFUL that game was, especially when it debuted.

I would really say that at all?

One because japan doesn't really like sonic much in the first place, but two folks here like 3d sonic, like shadow, and a lot of folks have extreme ( sometimes misplaced) nostalgia for sonic adventure. I think folks think forces look like... well not great. If forces looked fine people would excited for both things. They can co-exist but the west will be the ones buying... both of those things. There are different demo's here, that like different stuff, younger people who grew up with newer sonic games aren't going to automatically prefer this. So foks can have folks, have options. And if Sega every presses their "OTHER emergency we need to milk nostalgia we might need to call other developers to not fuck this" , button people will be excited for that too.

Also the problem isn't iizuka wanting control of classic games, is him wanting control of anything. I don't know whats going on at sonic team,i'm not gonna pretend but they need like... new folks.

Which modern sonic?
Because I would disagree?

It kinda seems, dreamworks-ey to me

If you argued the sonic adventure grafitti style of the early 00's then I would agree yes

Yeah totally

I legit wouldn't mind if they went back to that, and those two pop art styles were the visual representation of the series. I was always fond of those illustrations, they even had some as recent as the warehog irrc.

I don't really know what they are trying to do with 3d sonic's visuals nowadays besides " looks pretty"

Looking at some of Adventure's concept art really shows how much personality and style the series art has lost over the years imo.

🤷🤷

I mean don't get me wrong I like Toei and Tyson Hesse's Sonics best by far but at least Uekawa's early work was weird in a way that was more visually interesting than "3D render of Sonic running at the screen for the millionth time".

The classic sonic toei and hysee are fine but, I just prefer adventure sonic.

Classic sonic has just been... I dunno generic and cute to me.

Adventure Sonic is stupid and cool, and that's what I like

Honestly, why did SEGA/Sonic Team give Sonic green eyes to begin with?

From Josh Wallen's critique on Sonic Adventure:

Sonic's few appearances on the Saturn made one thing clear: He looked weird in 3D. The character was built to run on a 2D plane, not with a camera trailing behind him. Modern Sonic's longer legs and curved spines, combined with a new running animation to keep him looking happenin', and his green eyes served to...

Yeah, I still don't get that one.

The rest of Sonic's modern design, I can understand. They just wanted to make him look more natural for a 3D platforming game, and Sonic in his classic form looked a bit weird on the Saturn as mentioned above. But what was the purpose of the green eyes?

I think they've said they just wanted to get more detail, especially since there were so many cutscenes in Adventure. Same reason they put gray soles with a sneaker design on the bottom of his shoes.

I think they mention the reason in the art book that recently came out.

So I wiped my YouTube history but was stupid enough to try and watch the official video of the special edition unboxing and Studiopolis act 2 gameplay. One of the recommended videos at the end was a leaked video of a boss fight I didn't know about. Not the end the world but very annoying.

I can't wait for 3D Sonic to be obliterated. I've been anticipating this day since Sonic Adventure 2. So exciting!

But it wont.

They will just make two sonics. You should wait for more fulfilling things.

Well, of course. It's the only way Sega thinks Sonic can possibly be relevant after all. However, but it would be very nice if they changed their approach to 3D Sonic and took influence from Sonic Mania. No more multiple gameplay styles, automated sections. Get rid of Iizuka if we're really lucky.

I'd rather it not?

While I'm all for them focusing on one gameplay style and having variant characters and leaving alternate styles to spin off games. There is a lot of stuff in classic sonic that I don't want to touch modern sonic and vice versa, both thematically and in terms of gameplay. I want them to be uniquie different and justify each others existence.
