Marvelous USA CEO Ken Berry Talks About Switch 2 Physical Games, Game Key Cards, and More

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

Good interview here with Ken Berry talking about their commitment to not release the new Game Key Cards for their Switch 2 games, and how they've had a really popular response to that stance already.

It has been very rewarding to see our titles mentioned as games that fans intend to purchase on Nintendo Switch 2 since they know we went with the full ROM game cards. It was not an easy decision as it had to be made many months ago when things were very uncertain and we were still learning about how the Game Key Card option worked, but the more we found out about it the more I thought our fans would much prefer the ROM option.

If our initial lineup sells well and we can make a clear association with its success being tied to being a ROM offering then that will greatly help our cause in the future, but may still not make financial sense on smaller releases that have a price point under $50 such as an indie title being offered physically for $39.99 or less.

It makes sense, XSEED/MarvelousUSA has always been big on releasing big Ultimate Collector Day One Ambassador Edition boxes full of trinkets. I imagine collectors who like that stuff are the same crowd who are adamant about the game being on the cart.

I'm still in wait and see mode with these new RF and HM games coming out. I don't trust the XSEED localization team after RF5, and as far as I know there haven't been major changes in staff, so it's probably the same activist coo-coo's running the show. Changing their name to Marvelous USA makes me think they are even more involved with the Japanese dev team, which is concerning for the future of these series.

The most concerning part of the interview is that he thinks physical, on-cart games would be unprofitable if sold at less than $50.

They need to offer smaller cards. The only one Nintendo offers is 64GB.

On Switch 1, we said that some releases required a DL because Nintendo didn't offer cards large enough. This time, they aren't small enough. Come on. No 64GB card was EVER made for Switch 1, and now it's the only option. This is bullshit.

EXACTLY THIS!

Don't trust this man's lies.png (I don't know this guy and he probably isn't a liar...just used it for effect)

Doing an interview (probably part of the coverage they get for buying marketing packages with the sites own btw) built around them being BRAVE enough to offer physical titles and stepping up to the "aid" of indie gamers while telling you their indie titles should cost close to what non indie titles retail for (also on disc mind you) is their way of giving you a shit sandwich. Shit on the top, nutella in the middle, and shit on the bottom.
