Sony delists PS5 spam games after developers speak out

We've talked about it loads here on TrueTrophies, but the PS Store is constantly being overloaded with paid platinums and spam games that take very little effort to churn out. These games block many of us from jumping into the best PS5 games as we just can't find them. However, with developers speaking up on this issue, it seems like Sony has stepped in as a bunch of PS5 spam games have been delisted as of February 2025.

Developer RandomSpin Games has had all its PS5 and PS4 games removed from the PS Store

  • Developers recently spoke out about the poor state of Sony's PS Store
  • Developer RandomSpin Games has seen all of its PS5 and PS4 removed from the PS Store
  • It's unclear whether this removal was a response to the developers or was just a coincidence on Sony's part
In a recent interview with IGN, multiple developers spoke up about the poor state of Sony's PS Store and how difficult it is to navigate compared to the store page on Xbox. The developers also discussed the never-ending list of spam games and how easy it seems to get them approved on Sony's PS Store.

Good, I know trophy and achievement hunters complain a lot but curation on all these stores is pretty much nonexistent now. I assume allowing pretty much anything is a legal CYA but I hate it.

Steam try to discourage it by putting down a requirement for 100 dollars to list a game. That money is refunded if your game revenue reach 1000 dollars or more, but basically it is a barrier to discourage mass uploads. There is only so much you can do, as sometimes it is hard to tell if something is garbage vs some up and coming new Indie classic.

We always had shovelware. It isn't going away.

I doubt that this is in response to any complaints from other devs, players or journalists. Likely a coincedence, and that they were delisted for some other reason.

it would be nice to see the stores better curated, as it is currently it makes no sense, you can't have some of the best Indie Early Access games on the store like V Rising, Valheim, Phasmophobia, until they leave Early Access. But you can have 10000 cash grabs, that are 1000 times worse in literally every way, because they are 'finished' games. It's like the idea is, stop garbage from flooding the store, and only let in good 'finished' games. But instead, they are stopping good games from growing, and instead flooding hte market with literal garbage.

Unfortunately we've proven to ourselves with all these Garbo "games" that clog up the store that we need to go back to the way Sony handled games on the PS3 store. Everything was curated and they only released a dozen or so games per week. It was actually possible to find shit you wanted unlike the current model of approving everything and throwing it onto the storefront.

I really think it would have been best if the Switch 2 started from zero with the Switch 2 store. So much garbage it's no better than Apple's offering.
Cell Phone garbaaaage.

I hope people from the other thread now understand what exactly IGN was actually talking about.
ITs not necesarrily that other stores dont have shovelware, its that said shovelware was clogging up discovery pages.

But people are constantly on the defensive about their preferred platforms, its possible for platforms to make mistakes, when we make a stink about that mistake things like this can happen and they fix it.

Yeah, because there's no shovelware on pc and elsewhere.

Glad the PSN Store is gonna get a much needed cleaning up.
Good on Sony for atleast starting the process so quickly.

I feel like it should be obvious for any of the storefronts to have a limit on how many games someone can release per year...

Nintendo during the NES era did exactly that btw. learning from the American console crash of the 80s, where audiences were fed up by shitty shovelware.

no publisher on the NES was allowed to release more than 5 games a year.
I feel like a similar limit should be implemented on all stores like Steam, Microsoft Store, Epic, PSN, Nintendo Store etc.

maybe not just a blanket 5 games a year, but a limit based on specific factors to prevent spam releases.

LOL EVERY BIG publisher during the NES era had Shell companies to get past that limit. Remember Ultra Games and Metal Gear being released under Ultra? How about Gyruss? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Blades of Steel? Skate or Die?

they indeed did. but that is not the point. the point is that limiting the amount of releases would be a logical thing to do.

closing such a loophole would be extremely easy. I don't think a slop developer like the ones making these games would be able to hide the fact that they just register new company names every week to get around such a limit.

On the flip side, the entire App Store of Xbox was removed

I don’t mean games

All the thousands of apps were removed. Some of them were actually useful.

The true solution is to overhaul PSN. Give me more tools and better ways to discover games. Every other store in existence pales in comparison to what you can do with Steam. Hide it behind an advanced toggle if you must, just do something.

Surely not just anybody can upload a game to PSN right? There must be a person or team with the digital equivalent of a rubber stamp that says pass/fail right? Maybe that person or team is an idiot who should be replaced right?

I wonder if this somehow involves money.

it's pretty clear there wasn't or isn't any control. It would just take one not mentally challenged person to clean the store each week, no need to block legit games.

Yup, let's say 1000 games are added each year. That averaged to 3 a day, so with a 5 day week, 1 person can spend 2 hours or so looking at each one, that's 4 games per day. If that person can't determine if a game is shovel ware dog shit in 2 hours, replace them. 2000 games a year can be covered by 2 people. It's easy to curate this stuff.

They wont though, it costs sony next to nothing to host these games but they make money each time one of them sell. Is it still a 30% cut?
