Sony Gamescom Press Conference Thread: Let Us Dream

They gave an introduction to their WWS titles, specifically mentioning these are the European based developers . People are either being wilfully ignorant or deliberately obtuse if they want to call the games you mentioned "indie".

exactly. t was pretty clear they were 1st party exclusive and in some case co-developed with SSM. how in the world a Sony co-developed and published game is an "indie" title. It's from WWS

so.... can we get an updated list of confirmed launch titles for ps4?

If the game doesn't contain a machine gun or a medieval armor, or if the trailer doesn't show sports cars, then it must be an indie title...
That's more or less the reasoning behind it!

I'm just honestly stunned people are disappointed. That dumbfounds me. They had several announcements at E3, and even more today. And they still have the big guns from ND, SM and others looming. And some Japanese stuff coming out of TGS (though I don't expect a whole lot out of that show). They're just stacked with games of all kinds.

What else do people want?

And I got to see something like Rime completely blow me away. That's why we have indies folks, the big studios don't create games like this anymore.

And I'm going to stop reading gaf on that note tonight, always good to go away on a positive note that I totally agree with.

night night.

Figured I should drop this here...

This is fucking amazing. Also, the face expression when he is banned.

lol, by most accounts Microsoft had a better showing even without a real conference. And Sony dropped the ball close to the finish race by launching on Nov 29th in Europe. Microsoft will now surely launch earlier an with Fifa packed in with exclusive content and what is now being seen as a much stronger launch lineup.

Huh. Okay.

Just remember one is is releasing in less than half countries. The other ended up showing literally about 10 new games. Lets be honest, are you saying this because we didn't have 10 minute gameplays plus in-game trailers of ND and SSM games?

It really bothers me that for many people indies=not real games.

Jesus Christ.

I agree, but sometimes it helps to be very definitive, to the point of annoying people.

Because it was from WWS, Sony didn't feel the need to shout that all those games were exclusives, but we've got our usual idiots who still rant about NOEXCLUSIVES.

I think that they should have at least said "today we're introducing 5 more to the 20 WWS-exclusives coming by Year 1."

I must say the AC4 DLC looks like the best use of exclusive DLC, bring in the main character from the VIta versions sounds like a good idea...not getting AC4 anyway, because its AC, but good use of "exclusive content"

I was expecting a "one more trailer" sort of announcement....at least one big AAA exclusive...I was a bit disappointed by that, felt like they sort of bumped the hype thats been going for them instead of skyrocketing it....either way nice conference, but very relaxed and not quite as teeth baring and bomb dropping compared to E3, which makes sense given the venue, but its hard not to compare the two

I'm kind of dumbfounded at some of the reactions here. People have been clamoring for games and Sony brought them in droves. Oh, but they aren't big budget shooters or anything, so it doesn't matter. That seems to be a common sentiment for the disappointment over the press conference, which is absolutely ridiculous.

Totally agree.

I don't get that level of disappointment that some people are expressing. The term "Indie" seems to be mistaken as some sort of stigma. An indie game is not to be confused with some little $0.99 game on iOS. Take that Rapture game: how can a commercial game built upon CryEngine 3 be seen as something some guy made in his free time for tablets? The license costs alone put it in another ballpark as far as production value is concerned. I am hyped for many games I saw today, especially Rime and that Rapture game. I'll get those games, along with the Witness, as soon as they are released.

Maybe people think that those games don't justify the new hardware. But I seriously, seriously doubt that none of the games we saw today benefited greatly from the much simpler, less eccentric architecture of the PS4. Seriously, it is not hard, even for an "indie" game without in-your-face graphics, to be heavily impacted by the memory limitations of the PS3. Most important, strong hardware allows small teams to make games without investing valuable time and resources into optimizations. "Optimizing" games is often understood as something positive, but for many games it is just a costly, time-consuming, annoying obstacle that makes the difference between a title being made or not made at all. The next-gen consoles are not only a massive improvement in raw processing power, but in software engineering efficiency.

The only thing that left me a little disappointed, although only slightly, is that the release is in late November here in Europe; but who cares. My backlog on my PS3 and Vita alone is already to bloated for my gaming time budget.

And yes, that ignorant director and his/her dumb-as-fuck wide shots made me almost throw something at my screen. :-)

Nice conference. A little too indie focused of me, but that's okay.

edit: Jeez. Derrick got banned again already? Hope it isn't a perm.

Some more information on PS4 tech:

Right now there is the GDC Europe in Cologne and Sony did a presantation on PS4's custom SCE feature set.

Do you remember the original UE4 PC demo that had Sparse Voxel Octree Global Illumination and the PS4 version didn't?

Sony's braniacs managed to do Sparse Voxel Cone Tracing for lighting without having to create the CPU heavy Octrees. They combine the Sparse Voxel stuff with the GCN Sparse Texture stuff and can do amazing lighting on PS4 without having to brute force it like on PC.

I'm afraid I can only offer you a German source:

Do you mind that I make a new thread for you?

I'm actually very impressed overall, they announced a ton of new and amazing exclusive games whilst keeping their big guns underwraps. Nov 29th is the only disappointment, but I guess they are launching in 32 countries.

Not only do I love the variety of games and its not all about the mega franchises at their show, but showings like this give me more hope that the system won't have launch games and then nothing until a year from now when all the big studios finally show up like almost every console launch.

I like that second son is a near term AAA carrot. I like that i know the other big devs are at work but I don't need to see a teaser now. Its happening, and I can wait until next E3. Seeing some Uncharted splash page is as unsurprising and useless as watching that booring Halo teaser. Halo is coming out on X1??? Holy SHIT! What a surprise. That didn't move the needle so showing a splash page or CG logo would do just as little.

Over the years the one thing i've loved that Sony has done is bring in the odd ball 1st party game, or the artsy game, or something truly unique. It really started up on the PS2, gained momentum on the PS3 and now they're going all out. I love that they promote stuff like ICO, Flower, Journey, Everyday Shooter, etc. MS is so ultra mainstream that it gets dull with all they promote. Not that they aren't good games (hell i bought more 360 games than PS3 last year) but I love the variety i'm already seeing this early in the gen. Just wait a couple years, it'll be awesome.

missed everything - can somebody tell me what the "ND-Talk" is all about? will we get a first look on a new game on GC or was it only teased for a later reveal?

Didn't see Microsoft conference so can't compare the two but this was awful in my opinion. None of the stuff shown screamed "Get this hot new console come november!" And that guy early on stage had the same mimmicks has Don Mattrick lol.
The bundle for the PS3 looked quite interesting.

EA conference on the other hand got me hyped for BF4 and made me discover Plants vs Zombies.

The best thing in pc was that ICO meets Journey game, Rime I think, made by tequila people. I wish they have shown a lil more, still not sure what kind of a game it is. Looks nice though.

edited: Is Rime the PS4 exclusive game?

No body seems to be worried about the ISP stuff (prefered data handling etc). Though net neutrality stuff might be too offtopic.

Yup it's interesting although Orange sucks in France and I ditched it half a year ago for another ISP. I wonder how it's all going to work.

In general i was impressed by that, and will be getting it a ps4 day one. Though wish there was a ND trailer or some huge teaser to end the show, but even without that sony have done more than enough this year!

Though i do think they need to actually show more support for the ps4 eye than playroom if they actually want to sell any cameras. I can see potential for the Eye for us core gamers and think sony would be the ones to push the creativity forward in this area, but they just seem to be ignoring it really and not showing any features!

i know its probably as they want to get the core first and dont want to be (wrongly) acused of copying or going casual, but yea still think some info would of be good.

I think Sony's biggest err in this conference was how they framed and paced the games announcement.

I know it's a small and redundant matter, but it would've been great if they had set it very very clearly once they were out of the 'indie stage', and moved on the real exclusives announcement like Rime and Rapture.

Those games, despite being developed by a small team, was by no means indie. Indie also gives the impression of self-publishing and timed-exclusivity, which was clearly not the case with SCE-published/funded games.

They should have been a very clear distinction between 'self-published indie titles' , 'SCE-published exclusive A/AA-titles', 'WWS AAA-titles' and 'AAA-multiplats.'

As it was, the indie and the SCE-published titles were so close to each other, it kinda blurred the impression.
This is a very good point, "indie" has almost become a genre defined by the types of games rather than who makes them.

I really liked it despite the wonky camera movements.

Especially looking forward to

- Twitch
- IGN app
- Minecraft
- War Thunder
- Other F2P (planetside2, warframe)

Please don't ever let Jim Ryan present something like this again. Sony have a lot of far better mouthpieces to put on stage. Jim is not one of them. It was uncomfortable watching him as him waved his hands about and fluffed up at times.

That director really pissed me off and apparently I wasn't the only one. Every time they showed a trailer for a new game, he/she breaking up the trailer with these stupid panning shots of the audience. I mean, that the hell was he/she thinking. Why would they think that we would want to see the back of the heads of people on laptops.

On a different note, there hasn't been much gameplay footage come out. A lot of offscreen/cam footage, but nothing like KZ multiplayer or things of that nature.
