Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

Hopefully no delays, but looks like a good year for Sony Japan.

Gravity Rush 2 unspecified 2016 Release
The Last Guardian October 24th 2016
Gran Turismo Sport November 15th 2016

What is Sucker Punch up to? Their last game Second Son/First Light was 2014, 2 years ago now. If their next game isn't announced until 2017 E3, it might be a 2018 game. They just finished building an all new good looking PS4 engine with Second Son, what the heck could be taking them 4 years? Just seems so odd.
Shinobi said they are not working on Infamous and we now know they are not working on Spiderman.

So, that leaves a new IP. It would definitely explain the wait.

I am looking forward to Shinobi teases for it lol.

Hot Shots Golf as well, right?

You should add the newly announced SIE San Mateo Studio that is producing Spider-Man (with Insomniac Games and Marvel) and Fairlight (with Impulse Gear).

Wasn't sure where else to post this but I have seriously never been more impressed with a Sony line-up of upcoming games. Just the AAA ones:

- God of War
- Days Gone
- Spider-Man
- Horizon
- Detroit
- Dreams
- The Last Guardian
- Gran Turismo Sport
- Gravity Rush 2

I am legitimately interested in every one of these with GTS as the lone exception. It's just so diverse and loaded with new IP as well. Uncharted, Ratchet, and MLB got the ball rolling earlier this year in terms of PS4 exclusives and now the next couple of years look ridiculously stacked. What's crazier is the fact that Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch, two of their premier studios, also have unannounced games brewing. Not to sound like a complete fanboy but I feel incredibly excited to be a PlayStation gamer right now.

Plus whatever Death Stranding turns out to be.

Gaming would be in a much darker place without Sony's first party games and third party partnerships. God knows the other manufacturers are barely trying.

But where is Knack 2? :I
I think God of War started out with Knack playing the son. But due to salary demands and creative differences Knack dropped out and was re-cast.

I try to sound neutral most of the time, but you are so right, LOL. The demoes shown at Sony's conference yesterday were all so promising. Well, maybe Days Gone aside, but I think it has a lot of potential as long as it's not trying to be a TLOU clone.

Days Gone is an open world where you are a bounty hunter who rides around with his motorbike. There are insanely huge zombi hordes and plenty of ways to handle them. It isn't a TLOU clone at all.

It's a great line-up, especially when you consider Ratchet and Uncharted only just came out. And even more so when you consider there are plenty more first party games we don't know about too. I just hope Sony continues to invest in the smaller PSN titles too.

Exactly. Its just taking some of the things from Last of Us just like other games do and building with different gameplay elements, open world with dynamic day/night and weather and unique story.

It's heavily inspired by, though. But to be honest - what isn't?
Looking at you Gears of War

That's quite the list...
Grand Turismo looks as boring as ever (and sounds as horrible as ever) but the rest is on my list of anticipated games.

This is not really a new game, but looks like ''World Of Warriors'' from Mind Candy (Moshi Monsters) is now a ''2nd party'' game, because its beeing published by Sony, and the trailer features the ''Sony Computer Entertainment presents''

Trailer

Coming in October for PS4

I don't think this counts as a 2nd party game

SCEA/SIE has published games before without owning the IP's.

Do Gamescom (or PGW, which I hope they don't do) and PSX not exist anymore? And even if the game is 2018, is that a bad thing?

2017 will have Horizon, God of War, and probably Days Gone. That's a major game for three of the four quarters. If Spidey hits next year then they're all full up, and they're going to need SOMETHING for 2018, no?

I know, but the setting and concept look very similar. I'm probably just being skeptical, that's all. In my opinion, to make the two different, Days Gone could go for a more comedic and over the top route. The gameplay demo seemed to showcase the gameplay as dumb (in a good way) and over the top.

ND's next game will very likely be a 2018 title. Don't see them releasing a new game next year. Now if they decided to go for a two teams approach again after Uncharted 4 was released, I can see their third game being a Fall 2019 title.

I think TLOU2 (which, let's be honest, is most likely ND's next game) is 2019 tbh. I could be wrong, though.

Oh, please, no. 2019 is so far away. I hope ND can push a game out by Fall 2018. Last gen they managed to release a game every two years or less. With some production most likely worked on TLOU2 before Neil and Bruce were brought ovee to Uncharted 4, hopefully 2 years from now is enough time.

That's kinda Dead Rising's thing though.
I know, but I don't see a problem if Bend doesn't just oitright copy Dead Rising. This still has crafting which Dead Rising doesn't, right? I really don't know, so excuse me if I'm wrong. Never played Dead Rising. I just hope they don't go for a grounded and serious tone like TLOU. Well, at least the gameplay demo somewhat confirmed it's not "grounded".

2018 is plenty fine, it's more that it's odd because 4 years development time on a game with an engine all ready from a team that's fairly efficient raises some questions. I mean it'd be a complete shame if they tossed the Second Son engine out after one game considering it was a great looking engine.

Sucker Punch, PixelOpus, North West Studio, Naughty Dog (we can make informed guesses though), and there must be some devs within Japan Studio who aren't tied up in The Last Guardian or Gravity Rush 2.

Since both The Last Guardian and Gravity Rush 2 is almost finished it's more than likely that they're next projects are finishing up pre-production and moving from prototypes to full-production in the coming months.

I'm more impress on most of them doing something new and step out of their comfort zone.

I mean, I don't think these two projects combined would require much more than 50 employees from Japan Studio. Since the studio has around 400, there must be some projects that have been in full production for some time already.

edit: Of course Japan Studio does ex-dev as well, but that wouldn't take the majority of the personnel, I'd think.

Dead Rising 2 and beyond kinda has crafting in the form of combo weapons, made by combining items together. Hell, even the first had it a little bit in the form of drink mixing.

I think two games in post-production would require more people than 50 but I'm guessing you're right about there being more projects in production. I'm guessing it's even more since The Tomorrow Children is also wrapping up.

Their Japan studio have had really good output the last couple of years. Hopefully some people are working with From Software on any of their coming projects.

Oh, okay, nevermind. I'll admit to never owning an XBox console and not being interested in the exclusives at all, so I didn't have a clue. :P

Either way, I hope Days Gone just stays away from TLOU's serious and grounded tone. Don't mind it being more like Dead Rising since that is not on PlayStation platforms.

Particularly Horizon, for me. We're talking about a developer who's historically made visually impressive FPSs, who is now making a massive scale open world action RPG. That's a fucking massive step-up in their game.

Dead Rising 2 and Off the Record were on PS3, and 4 might eventually end up on PS4. Word is that it's a one year timed exclusive like Tomb Raider.

Yo, what? That is some crazy release schemes. So the first Dead Rising was only on 360, the second was on PS3 and 360, the third was only on XB1 and the fourth is currently known to only be on XB1. Not including PC versions, of course. Wow, who the hell planned all that? :P

Watch the first trailer; the cinematic one (which played early during the E3 conference). They're clearly going for a sombre, reflective tone.

Dumb business decisions? Must be a Capcom™ game.

That's the problem with the cinematic trailer. The gameplay trailer, on the other hand, shows that the gameplay is not really serious and grounded. LOL, ludonarrative dissonance, anyone? :P

Indeed. Dumbest move is not bringing Dino Crisis back. :P

It gets weirder. Dead Rising was created out of the husk of a cancelled sequel to the little known (but excellent) PS2 exclusive Shadow of Rome (there are even some Shadow of Rome weapon and armor models tucked in some Dead Rising 1 and 2 shops as easter eggs). And I'm not entirely sure why Dead Rising was never ported to the PS3 either, because they later made a Wii version of the game, albeit with major differences and Wii concessions. And although Dead Rising 2 was on PS3 and PC as well, the 360 version got two exclusive expansion story dlc things for the game, one a prequel and the other a sequel to the events of the main game.

Through a lot of confusion and some marketing deals, the series is mostly associated with Xbox.

Yes, I love it, such an impressive looking game.
Like he said, it's impressive that a bunch of them are doing this and their stuff looks exciting.

I'm not seeing what you're seeing. What about the gameplay is not particularly grounded to the extent where you're comparing it to Dead Rising?!

Apart from Dreams, everything there looks great; I still have reservations over GT Sport though.

Edit: Not interested in TLG.

Well, I wouldn't say fighting off hordes of zombies is particularly "grounded". It's not the most over the top thing done in a game, but it's not something "normal" either. To be fair, I wasn't the one who started the Dead Rising comparisons. I just said I wanted the game to be comedic and over the top. That's when Creaking came in and said that's Dead Rising's thing.

Isn't really a big deal to me either way, lol. I have zero interest in TLOU2 so UC4 was basically a swan song from ND until like...2023 or something, lmao.

As far as last gen, regardless of what they said about "time to triangle", it's obvious they're not going to be able to churn out games with the same regularity they did last gen, unless they went and built two teams without telling anyone, which would be neat.

2018 is plenty fine, it's more that it's odd because 4 years development time on a game with an engine all ready from a team that's fairly efficient raises some questions. I mean it'd be a complete shame if they tossed the Second Son engine out after one game considering it was a great looking engine.

It's not that odd to me. For one thing, games are clearly taking longer and longer to complete. And even with an engine ready, they've still got to develop a brand new IP (apparently). And once that's done, it needs to be a larger, meatier game than Second Son because that was everyone's biggest complaint about that title.

This could mean a few things:

1.) There are some studios we've forgotten.

2.) There are some studios we don't know about, lol.

3.) Some studios have multiple teams and they're developing multiple games simultaneously.

Either's fine, 'cause honestly I was wondering wtf happens once 2018 hits.

Man, I really wish I could share your enthusiasm.

Spider-Man and The Last Guardian are the only ones I'm excited about, and I'll also give Gravity Rush 2 a shot.

But the rest are just unappealing to me.

Hmm, sorry, I don't follow you here. ND released one of the best games of last gen just two years after their first PS3 game and back then it was just one team. Of course, development costs and times have increased since 2009, but at least this time, assuming they are working on TLOU2, they don't have to revamp a lot of things and probably already had the foundation of the sequel before development was moved to Uncharted 4.
