Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

Could be demoing their games to the press ahead of E3? And then we might get a ton of previews and such go live after their conference giving us more detail on the games.

Seems like standard pre-E3 stuff. I think most publishers do this to build up some pre-E3 hype. Plus they're more in control of what content comes out instead of leaving it for Judges Week (which is embargoed until actual E3 begins).

Just usual get stuff out of the way, they did this every time like GR2 preview last E3.
I guess Knack 2 and Everybody's Golf maybe UC TLL will get sizzle reel treatment.

No way UC TLL will get a sizzle reel treatment, it actually opened up one of their shows, Sony treats it like a big AAA game almost.

Still surprised an ass game like Knack can get a sequel but in some ways it puts me at ease because it feels like Sony are invested in first party more than ever, I mean you didn't see Lair or Heavenly Sword get sequels(deservedly so). I'm sure it will be better than the first but for a mascot platformer type game it fails on the thing that matters the most(at least to me) in the genre. Great character design.

I agree but it sold well so it gets a sequel, they don't realize it sold well only because it was a launch game in an uncompetitive genre.

I firmly believe we're almost done with Sony's PS4 exclusives and a lot of the next-wave will be PS5/crossgen experiences.

Well almost every WWS has to at least crank out two AAA games for the PS4 as a minimum I'd imagine.

So with that in mind I still see PS5 being 2019 at the earliest but more likely 2020.

Stuff like Death Stranding and TLoU II could be cross gen but I hope PS5 has bc so people aren't fussed where they play 1st party games. It's also just a good business decision (if the technology implementation is good) by giving legs to titles.

According to the press release site of Playstation Knack 2 will come out Q2 2017, I dunno if this already be confirmed.
So a release shortly after E3?

The SIEE press site is not always accurate, they still have Drawn to Death as a TBD and Uncharted 4 is listed for 2017 lol

With that said, the game was rated in Brazil, getting a rating usually means the release is not that far

Lol, really? I think they know the deal. Can think of a few reasonable factors why they might have decided to give it another go if we look at reports outside the GAF bubble.

1. Plenty of children liked the game.
2. Lots of reports of people enjoying the co-op.
3. People seem to like Knack himself, despite some talk here.
4. 38% have the final boss trophy. Pretty good when a lot of well known games can sit around a 30% finish rate.
5. Cerny is a person you can trust if he says they can fix mistakes and do a lot better next time with a new focus.
6. We know the rough amount of manpower used at Sony Japan for the game, the game would be relatively cheap to make.

People honestly underestimate #1. I haven't even played Knack 1 and I know quite a few kids, especially at launch, that enjoyed the game. And it's in a category that's still quite under represented on consoles aside from on Nintendo platforms.

I reckon Knack 2 must be super cheap to make and it probably keeps Cerny happy, so from Sony's POV it's probably like sure, why not. Plus it fills a gap in their lineup and if it actually turns out to be a good game, then all the better.

Mb he is referring to the one that will "comply with the expectations from the fans in straightforward manner."

That's the dark fantasy game.
The other is Armored Core and the third is something weird.

Also, Miyazaki said he's done with sequels. So it seems to me we can look forward to new games, but not Bloodborne 2.

We'll see.

Heavenly Sword should have gotten a sequel. Sure, the gameplay left a bit to be desired but the characters, world, and voice acting were tremendous.

Everyone is done with stuff til contract negotiation time. Saying you don't want to, or won't, do something, is the best way to secure bargaining power when it comes down to figuring how much you get paid.

Bloodborne isn't dark fantasy, it's cosmic horror. The dark fantasy game will be a new IP.

Few would make that distinction. Bloodborne falls nicely into 'dark fantasy' for most people... I don't think the phrase 'cosmic horror' is something most people have even heard, let alone identify with.

If The Sentinel is indeed SP's new IP, it might be a scifi game. The name gives off some space adventure vibe.

Great name too.

So my buddy is trying his hand at livecasting and will be having me as a guest today on what he is calling his "PlayStation Brahcast".

We're going to be doing E3 predictions for the PlayStation conference.

Yeah, I like what the name implies as well. I'm thinking of some sci fi superpower type stuff.

Nice. Make sure to post here!

I think we're starting in about 2 hrs or so. I have an outline of my predictions / hopes on Google Docs but I'll see about summarizing what ends up being said in the stream. Can also share a link to the stream once its live, if anyone is interested in participating.

I started to make a list of what 15 games (safe number) they will show during their press conference. My guesses right now are (not in order):

Sucker Punch's game
From Software game
Spider-Man
God of War
Battlefront 2
Unannounced 3rd party VR game
Destiny 2
CoD: WWII
The Last of Us 2
Death Stranding
3rd party game
Unannounced 3rd party game
Red Dead Redemption 2
Days Gone
Square Enix game

Whatever they're working on with Sony (assuming they are) would've already been well into development by the time he said that last year.

Besides, Sony hasn't really been one to force developers to make sequels if they really didn't want to, hence why we got Bloodborne instead of Demon's Souls 2 in the first place.

I've been thinking what if the Bluepoint game is Shenmue I & II?

It would be pretty great for gamers like me who haven't played the original to play it before Shenmue III launches.

yeah, many of us said that too. If anyone is working on a remaster of that game, it should be Bluepoint

I wouldn't mind if Rockstar just dropped their trailer on Youtube this month or. It won't come out this year anyway.

Why? They could do the same way as Bethesda has done with Fallout 4. Complete reveal at E3 and launch it within few months. It worked well for Bethesda and I can remember when T2 said, they were very impressed by Bethesda's way with Fallout 4.

I wonder whether Sucker Punch's game will have traversal or not, considering all of their PS games have had it. Really curious to see how the gameplay is, not just in terms of mechanics but how things are laid out like side quests and collectibles.

That's a good get and all, but I wish London Studio would get the chance to develop a 'core' game again. I'd like to see a new Getaway, Eight Days, or even something totally new from them.

There's a good reason they don't make AAA games, its been over a decade since they made them. London studios heyday was in the PS2 era with Ghost hunter, Primal and Getaway, all games stylistically interesting but with OK to standard gameplay. They never proved they could be more in that era so if they were to make a AAA in this climate they would likely need to close shop like the rest of the uk devs, would you want that? It's best they carve their own niche than be compared to Nd, Guerilla and SSM.

This. As much as I would like to see another Getaway or MediEvil, they should leave the bigger AAA projects to the other WWS. :/

Side quests for whatever they're working on -- if it's that kind of game -- really need improvement. Infamous 2, for example, had lots of side missions, but most were just 1-2 sentences of someone asking for help with a couple of them having some sort of story that continued through the game. Second Son alleviated that problem by having only Cole's Legacy as a side quest and nothing else besides spray painting and stuff. xD~~

I mean, I DID like taking over each district. It just needed so much more.

As repetitive as the first two games' side quests were, they were a hundred times better than what was in SS.

I have high hopes for their next game and I hope SPP doesn't disappoint like they did with SS (First Light was better, but still not their best).

VR game can be core game too.

Sure, but generally they're shallow due to limitations, and it's unlikely to be as big a production as a standard PS4 game from another WWS studio.

First, MediEvil, Primal and Ghosthunter were all developed by Cambridge Studio aka Guerrilla Cambridge, not London Studio. Secondly, are you both saying that they should basically never try to improve or try to develop bigger-scale games? Would you say the same about Bend Studio? Guerrilla Games? Sucker Punch?
