Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

There are links above that mention how they failed to hire talent and i am calling bullshit on that. everyone in the industry wants to work at ND. And to say that no one is talented enough to work there is ridiculous. I recently played AC Unity and it's a gorgeous game even at 900p. ND's artists might be better but not by much.
Funny you should say this because just yesterday I was looking at the PC screenshot thread and came across some ubersampled 8K ACU screenshots with comparable environments to The Lost Legacy and it really doesn't match up well at all with sterile boxy environments, lo-fi geometry and textures.

Yes if I remember correctly Sony has 7 studios working on PSVR projects:

London Studio (Hiring Form)
Manchester Studio (Hiring Form)
Japan Studio (No More Heroes Allowed VR, etc)
Santa Monica Studio (Hiring Form)
Media Molecule (Dreams)
Polyphony Digital (GT Sport)

SuperMassive Games (Bravo Team, The Inpatient)

PSVR investment is real.
There were also a rumour that Sony Santa Monica is doing an AAA-VR Title.

Santa Monica is going to be an interesting dev to watch over the coming years. The start of the generation wasn't great for them with Stig's game getting cancelled ....
Any idea what that cancelled game was about? Regarding SSM, IMO they are better than ND in terms of set pieces and visuals. Ascension looked insane on PS3.

I'm rooting for Sucker Punch, liked their games since PS2 era. Hoping that their next game creates a huge buzz whenever its eventually revealed.

I dont know... I think we could get a gameplay teaser at PSX this year

On the other hand, Naughty Dog works REALLY fast and we got a gameplay reveal of TLL with what, 6,7 months into development?

I can see it happening

They probably could show an early vertical slice of gameplay at PSX, but I think that show doesn't really need it. PSX is for people that are already in the ecosystem. The fans will get hyped with a story trailer because we're salivating for any sliver of content and we know ND will deliver a great game with great gameplay. E3 needs beefier, more tangible content because it has to appeal to a wider audience. From a marketing perspective, it makes more sense to reveal the gameplay there. Open the show with a different cut of the story trailer and segue into gameplay. Boom, hype.

I also believe PSX will have more stuff. Probably something from Death Stranding. Possibly SPs new IP reveal. Remakes, remasters and reboots. Release dates for a bunch of stuff.

true. They could show something like they did for U4 at PSX2015 or even what they had to announce the date of Uncharted TLL

They already outsource asset creation to other studios.

Not all of it, they still do plenty of stuff in-house, especially in regards to animation. Lost Legacy had ~80 artists working on it (maybe more, it was a rough count), what on earth do you think they did?

Uncharted 4 debuted gameplay at PSX 14 though.
Nate even fell into the center of earth.

On top of that, TLOU debuted gameplay at E3 2012 only six months after Uncharted 3 came out.

TLOU2 has had a much shorter pre-production period, so it isn't quite the same but I wouldn't be surprised at all if they turned up with some gameplay footage.

I would be shocked if they show nothing. I mean there was a fair bit of backlash when they chose to focus on TLL at E3, hence Neil's current pinned tweet.

Yeah, I think we'll see something but i'm not sure what it'll be right now. Perhaps a trailer that blends gameplay and cutscenes? That way if the game is still too early they can get around it by just picking spots from the game that look the way they want it to right now during gameplay conditions.

We'll probably get a story trailer and some gameplay at E3 2018.

As zsynqx mentioned, Neil currently has a pinned tweet from E3 stating that they're excited to show people PII again, but right then they felt it was time for Chloe and Nadine's time to shine. So their adventure is now available and it'll be nearly four months since it was released by the time PSX gets here. That makes it seem like we could get something at PSX. Last year he mentioned that there were actually discussions about where PII would be unveiled, and ND decided they wanted to do it at PSX rather than E3.

The credits of TLL speaks for itself.

In a studio of >250 people; only 30-ish people were credited as "sup, we didn't do any work on TLL at all!"

This is true, but I'm sure there were a fair amount in the studio that were working on both. Frank Tzeng, Lead Character artist on TLL, wrote this about the project.
i was very honored to be the lead character artist of The Lost Legacy, this was a very hard project for me personally, not only because we only had a year to finish the whole game, but also there is another project in the studio going on at the same time, which is The last of us part 2, so my main focus was on T2 while i had to manage and schedule all the artists tasks making sure all the characters are consistent in our quality.
Because of the very short deadline, all the character heads need to be done really fast and try to keep the same quality , so i did this head to show as a example this can be done in one day. Starting from zbrush sculpting from a old head, doing sculpting new wrinkles and pores information, textures painting and baking. Of course, a lot of stuff is re-used such as eyeballs, lashes, brows or stables, and some hair as well, but all the stuff need to be tweaked for this character to make him unique.

Also noticed a bunch of people who were credited in TLL who've had twitter descriptions like designer/artist working on The Last of Us part 2 since the announcement back in December. Might have come on board for the final push to get TLL out the door.

Not sure what point I'm trying to make here. :p Just hoping TLOU2 is further along than many think.

What about SuperMassive Games as a potential SOCOM dev? I know Tidux is a tool and I don't want to give him the attention he's craving...but just hypothetically, that might make sense yeah?

Companies rarely do the entirely separate team thing. Usually if there's more than one project going on at a time, pretty much everyone's work ebbs and flows depending on what's needed at the moment.

They made a mistake unveiling the game at PSX. They should save this gameplay for E3.
There's just no way Sony would of been able to kept TLOU2 a secret and have that element of surprise. Plus, They made sure to emphasize super early into development.

The Until Dawn studio? The one that's working on like 3 games already? How would that make any sense for them to make a third person shooter?

TLOU 2 gameplay will definitely be shown at PSX.

Meh, I don't think so. They need more time, I think they want to show us a full-reveal with a large demo and many details. So we'll get this at E3.
PSX will be for Indies and Titles like God of War, Days Gone, Spiderman etc.
I don't think we will see new titles at PSX, except Sucker Punch's Game. This project is a safe bet for me, at PSX.

After last year, PSX is officially a wildcard. I can see it being anywhere from a strong E3-level conference with TLOU2 gameplay and Sucker Punch's new game to something like it was in 2014/2015. Nothing would surprise me.

The best we can predict is that it will be oriented around Sony fan-service. So stuff like updates on exclusives, exciting ports/remasters and localizations.

The Inpatient and Bravo Team will be released November 21th and December 5th, respectively, both by Supermassive.

So that's three games being released this year AFAIK for Supermassive since PSN lists Hidden Agendas as October 24th for US and October 25th for EU.

Damn, they've been busy. Five games in two years.

EDIT: I guess six when you include them taking Tumble and making it a VR game, but with or without it, hot damn.

Sony should think on buying them they seem to produce very good quality games in no time.

I know they wanted to be independent and they did mention that a couple years ago. But maybe they did that to see who would bite.

It's clear the guys at WWS believe in them. Whether they can be like Insomniac or not is anyone's guess at this point, but good for them for catching the eye of one of the major console manufacturers.

I feel like this is Sony right now. Super quiet and super secretive. Unless their just being complacent (I hope not). TGS, PDW, and PSX will be interesting. Looking forward to announcements.

But they already have God of War, Spider-Man, Days Gone, Detroit, TLOU 2, and Death Stranding announced. That's not complacent even if they had nothing else to announce. Of course they do though.

Non complacent at all...

Can't believe Sony still has 6 studios without unannouced games.

London Studio
Manchester Studio
PixelOpus
San Diego Studio
Sucker Punch
Japan Studio (Since Knack 2 is also finished)

That's not even including studios with multiple teams that might be working on something or 2nd Party/3rd Party deals & exclusives.

Or even XDEV development/Playlink games

That is crazy!

im not so sure about Sucker Punch

it seems like Sony is holding back their big first Party Games for E3 while PSX could be the show for the smaller & Core titles

By next years E3 God of War is out and Spiderman could aswell. I think they will unveil Sucker Punch new IP there in big style like they did with horizon and Days Gone....
Especially since they don't need to announce it - they have many big games in their pipeline (God of War, Spiderman, Days Gone, TLOU 2, Death Stranding) including third party games (FF7, KH3) for PSX and Sucker Punch Game is 2019/20

time will tell but i wouldn't bet on Sucker Punch like i did few months ago for E3

I think they're just shifting focus to getting all those announced games out the door instead of announcing even more.

they'd be pretty dumb to be complacent after their "we held announcements back" bs at E3

How would anyone know if it's BS? They showed quite a bit for 2017/2018 alone, both in the pre-show and in the main show. Almost nothing there looked like it was two years out, which couldn't be said for 2015 and 2016's shows. It's pretty reasonable to think they have games for late 2018/2019 that weren't shown considering the quantity of 2017 and 2018 products on display.

It was less than a year ago when Sony made a slew of announcements for 2017 alone (Lost Legacy, Wipeout Omega Collection, Patapon/PaRappa/Locoroco, Gravity Rush 2 DLC), never mind the third party announcements.
