Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

"Stop announcing games so early!"
"Okay, we'll focus on stuff coming in the near future"
"Where were all the big announcements?! Show sucked!"

I think that comes from the expectation for big announcements at E3 but also wanting them to come out sooner rather than later. Can't have it both ways though. Waiting for PSX to make big announcements means that we know about the game 6 months later and we're 6 months closer to release. That will help with the complaining about long waits. I think having what will arguably be their biggest exclusive announced at PSX last year opens the door for this type of change.

Non complacent at all...

Can't believe Sony still has 6 studios without unannouced games.

London Studio
Manchester Studio
PixelOpus
San Diego Studio
Sucker Punch
Japan Studio (Since Knack 2 is also finished)

That's not even including studios with multiple teams that might be working on something or 2nd Party/3rd Party deals & exclusives.

Or even XDEV development/Playlink games

That is crazy!

Do we know if San Diego is working on things other than MLB?

On that list I think we know that Manchester and London are working on VR games. I remember seeing job listings suggesting that Manchester's game is supposed to be pretty ambitious, and I would assume the same for London studio, given that team's size. It might be safe to assume that London is working on a more casual-friendly game though, given their history.

I have no idea about PixelOpus or Sucker Punch. Both teams have been quiet for fairly long.

Regarding Japan Studio, we do know that the GR2 team is working on a new 3rd person action adventure game. But if it ends up being a new IP, then it might be a long while before we hear about it.

If I had to guess, I would also add that genDesign and From Software are probably working with Sony on exclusives. All we know about genDesign is that the game *might* be open world (Ueda has expressed interest) and that they want to get a game out as soon as possible.

The wild card is From Software. They could announce a game at PSX this year or next year for all I know. No idea.

I am excited for Japan studios at tgs/psx because most of their announced games/collaborations are out or will be out I believe soon - everybody's golf, gravity rush 2, last guardian, knack 2. I guess they only have sotc remake in collaboration with blueprint games.

How would anyone know if it's BS? They showed quite a bit for 2017/2018 alone, both in the pre-show and in the main show. Almost nothing there looked like it was two years out, which couldn't be said for 2015 and 2016's shows. It's pretty reasonable to think they have games for late 2018/2019 that weren't shown considering the quantity of 2017 and 2018 products on display.

It was less than a year ago when Sony made a slew of announcements for 2017 alone (Lost Legacy, Wipeout Omega Collection, Patapon/PaRappa/Locoroco, Gravity Rush 2 DLC), never mind the third party announcements.

we'll know for sure when see the quality of this year's tgs, pgw and psx

I just think it's strange timing to suddenly limit whatever announcements they have like they did

Nothing at this year's E3 looked two years out because it was the same lineup from 2016

Well... Days Gone was shown at this E3 and I don't expect this game until at least late 2018 or early 2019.

Sure, because E3 2016 it was the conference where they revealed their new games. E3 2017 was to reveal the gameplay of these new games like for Marvel's Spider-Man. Didn't the same thing happened with Horizon Zero Dawn too? Revealed at E3 2015 with "real" gameplay at E3 2016.

No. They showed a long gameplay demo at the same conference it was revealed.

They showed more later too, of course.

Huh? Always thought the gameplay was shown at E3 2016. You are right! Props to Guerilla Games for having shown the actual gameplay so "early". Looks a whole lot better. Good thing they delayed the game the way they did. :D

What is strange about it?
How they decided to limit new announcements after doing the opposite in 2015 and 16. They didn't do enough this year to equally keep themselves in the conversation with their competition imo (in the context of E3)

? Horizon had "real" gameplay in 2015. God of War and Days Gone were revealed with gameplay in 2016 too. Detroit also had a trailer last year

For Horizon, you missed my post just before yours... :P

As for God of War and Days Gone, I would always trust SSM with their showing of GOW at E3 2016, especially since it seems to be due for early 2018 (really hope for a March release), but still skeptical about Days Gone E3 2016 showing. Sure they had gameplay shown there, they even had a different walkthrough of that same demo, which was cool to see and know. Although, the "real" demo that showed me (and people in general) what they wanted to do with this game is their E3 2017 gameplay reveal. E3 2016 looked more like a tech or gameplay concept demo (like that Zombie Horde, your bike and the dynamics between the horde and your environment). As for last year E3, they showed some of the core elements of Days Gone gameplay.

They've also been getting flak for how they've handled announcements over the last two years ("Stop announcing stuff so early!" and "What about the games I can get now/soon?"). Perhaps, this is a way to counter that notion?

They'll still have some of their biggest games announced at E3 but I think PSX is a good spot to announce major content and still somewhat stay within that "relatively soon" timeframe.

They said several times at e3 2017 that the big horses they showed in the reveal are still in the game. They wanted to show somthing different .

and No Heroes Allowed VR too, which should be released this year as well

The way I look at E3 this year vs last year was that E3 2017, Sony pushed their luck and announced too much last year that it ruined the balance of what new stuff they could announce at this year's E3.

It's not as if Sony suddenly doubled their AAA investment and output in the past few years.

Again, let's look at Sony's past few E3s from an announcement slate perspective:

E3 2014: Bloodborne/LBP3/R&C - 3 AAA announcements
E3 2015: Dreams/TLG/Horizon - 3 AAA announcements
E3 2016: GoW/DG/Spidey/DS - 4 AAA announcements
E3 2017: SoTC - 1 AAA announcement

What we can gather from the above, is that by adding one additional AAA announcement to their lineup in 2016 ( DS or Spidey ) and by having TLOU Part II be announced at PSX-16 instead of E3 2017, unless they pull off another E3 2016 and accelerate the announcement of games that are also very early in development, sooner or later there will be one E3 that suffers from the backlash of E3 2016/PSX 2016, which, for the lack of a better word "overdelivered" above the average announcement pattern.

Furthermore, as Sony decides that they wanted to have more conferences this year, that will also negatively impact E3, as E3/PSX 2016 benefited from basically absorbing announcements that in the past, would had been reserved for the European presser.

and No Heroes Allowed VR too, which should be released this year as well

That's currently scheduled for October in Japan. Once that's released Monkey King would be their only unreleased game. So i'm expecting to hear several new announcements at TGS.

Some quotes from producers at Japan Studio

“Since behind the scenes activities have been ongoing since Bloodborne, I hope this will be a year that bears the fruit of the things we’ve built upon so far.”

“While I can’t say any details yet, we’re also moving forward with the creation of ambitious new titles and new title concepts at the same time, so please continue to support Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Studio in 2017.”

It'll be revealed Sony Japan is working on an AAA rpg internally and co developing suikoden 6 with konami

I wake up

That's true. Hopefully they're really straightened out now after Becker took over. That mega-JRPG ain't gonna develop itself!

It really seems like Becker put things in order over there, but at the same time it feels like him and Ueda didn't get along well. Missing Ueda is a big blow imo.

There is actually no confirmation that Japan Studio staff is helping developing Monkey King. Oasis pr says SIEJA is working with them, and thats not the same as Japan Studio

The only one I believe, for all the crazy shit he said most of it came true. Monster Hunter dropping in a big way, Crash coming back, Ubisoft's Sea Fighting game. And much more. Just need that Japan Studio JRPG to finally make him viable as a source.

I know, it's just my opinion :p

Ueda is the king of taking too long to ship stuff though. Everyone was just "being creative" and Sony's biggest studio wasn't delivering anything besides PD with Gran Turismo

I believed a lot of his stuff too. I just think he liked trolling too much, and I think it was leading people on in the FFXV topic that got him banned? I even tried looking to see if I could find him on Twitter afterwards, alas to no avail.

Polyphony is separate to Japan Studio as well, I believe? During the PS3 era Japan Studio were notoriously inefficient, and I guess The Last Guardian was kind of emblematic of that problem.

He seemed pretty on point with his game teases. The only thing that was really off was the Konami stuff which was a lol Konami thing as well as the Sony JRPG which he said may not happen.

Man, what a weak E3 presser Sony had this year. I hope they go all out for 2018.

I'm probably very LTTP but just yesterday i heard of this rumour that there are chances Sony might announce a new hybrid system on the 19th at TGS.Suppossedly some design patents have been published recently.
http://nintendotoday.com/sony-patent-nintendo-switch/
(I know the article in the link is old)

Is it really possible?

this is an old patent. It would only make sense if it was a ps4 portable instead of a new system.
I doubt it is possible to fit ps4 SoC in such a small device with current tech

Did you just forgot the preshow? Hidden agenda, the impatient etc ... I think that Supermassive games can be considered doing AAA now.

as long as the internal game is Legend of Dragoon reboot, I am ok with this

..

E3 2015: Dreams/TLG/Horizon - 3 AAA announcements
E3 2016: GoW/DG/Spidey/DS - 4 AAA announcements

..

such a weaker show compared to what they've done this gen. Totally unmemorable show

Hidden Agenda, Frantics and the likes are PlayLink casual games, they don't count. The Inpatient, Bravo Team, Moss and the likes are PSVR games, they don't count. The PS4 has no gaems!

The only thing that seems to count is new AAA game announcements. Those games don't even have to ever be released, just the announcement is important for this contest.

In another place, somewhere, people are happy about casual games, PSVR games, Indie titles and more details about the already announced AAA games. But those people don't count.

I also excluded Farpoint from E3 2016.

While they're games with high production values, I don't know if they are big enough to be AAA 'by my own personal standards.'

Lol. If you liked E3 just say so. Don't be so passive-aggressive. A lot of people thought it sucked. Should they say it was good just because there were VR games and most don't have PSVR, and casual stuff that wasn't aimed at them to begin with?

Sonys real problem is that apparently it's pre-show has become as necessary as its actual show. I kept wondering where Gran Turismo and other shit was, and then someone told me Sony had a bunch of titles in their pre-show. Lol.

Sure but you can't draw a conclusion from an arbitrary perspective. For example I have no interest in the switch or most of nintendo exclusives I won't argue that they have nothing just not enough that interest me.

Yeah that was one of the most stupid decision sony had for their E3 this year.I feel like 2017 was in the pre show and 2018 in their conference.

It may be due to sony trying to avoid the complaint of showing games too early, but we were just confused.
Why the hell would there be games annoucements in the Pre show, it has virtually no visibility and to be fair if you don't account for the pre show their conference was weak like a 6/10 but with the preshow I'd pump at 8/10.

But since most people only watched the conference it seemed lacking in games.
