Sony PS5 era profits exceed $13 billion, more than the profits from PS1-PS2-PS3-PS4 put together

Financially, they're doing great. I will say that I think it's better to look at operating margin vs raw numbers due to inflation. Margin is up, which is great. If you do that you can see how profitable PS1 generation was!

Imagine making $13 billion in profit off of the hard work of their employees who they continue to lay off, and consumers who they continue to exploit by increasing subscription prices and console prices.

Greed knows no bounds.
Good grief. I can't believe grown adults can be this ignorant. It's a business.

Sony and Nintendo both profiting hugely from Microsoft's Xbox fuck ups

Xbox should've cut bait with gamepass years ago but now they've let gamepass make them go third party and give away market share to nintendo and sony. The whole gamepass dilemma is the most fascinating situation to happen in gaming recently and the downfall of the xbox brand is sad to witness. I never in a million years would've thought that after the 360 era that Xbox would fall this fast and this hard.

Sony worked hard 😓 during the entire PS2 generation to collect money for Bungie shareholders? 😂😂😂

So Call of Duty must be one of the greatest games ever and the Toyota Corolla is the best car ever made

Hey grats to shareholders and fan girls who cheer this type of thing

Even if they can't manage to release anything they made in house at least they made enough profit to pay Kojima to make something for them.
My favorite Sony games were, for the most part, externally-developed but published by them. I don't think I could care any less.

There's a ton of good games on PS. This might shock you but people don't buy PS just to play PS first party games. They buy it to play all the games that come to the system 3rd party, first party etc. In fact here's the real shocker most of that money they are making is from people buying 3rd party games/microtransactions.

What a lame argument.

Those 13 billions profit for the entire PS5 era are barely 19% of the Blizzard Activision deal, not impressed.
I mentioned that in past threads, that with that same amount of money Xbox could have keep operating for 10 years without making a profit. It was a stupid amount of money to spend. It made Microsoft flinch.

PlayStation doing better than ever and yet I'm the most unhappy I've ever been with them.

You are actually NOT wrong. Customer satisfaction is usually done through a loss of profits. Look at how happy people were with PS3 and how BADLY Sony were losing money. Sony is absolutely succeeding because they didn't have to compromise as much on price and output.

The fact is Sony can afford to make a little less. But they would not unless and until a new competitor show up. My bet is on Amazon.

The Bitter Critters will be here to derail the thread with silly talk
Give the fuckwits time my friend, most of them are in the leaked price for the Rog Xbox handheld thread trying to convince each other that paying 800 bucks is great deal.
All the same people I noticed who had a hissyfit over the ps5 pro price mind you.

Very impressive performance from ps5 though considering they launched during a pandemic and the mismanaged software output.
Its going to be a strong end to this generation from them I think

Things like this are all subjective anyways so it doesn't really matter. People hate PS5 this gen but I absolutely love it and I'm overwhelmed with games. Some people place high importance on 1st party but that just doesn't matter to me. I would never judge a console gen solely on the 1st party, it makes no sense. It would make the PS1\2 the worst console ever with that sort of take.

People were not happy with PS3 until the later years of that console. The initial console price was a problem, the George Foreman grill memes were prevalent, multi platform games performed better on 360, and Xbox actually had great 1st party output. I was an outsider playing COD 4 on PS3 while all of my friends were on Xbox.

Sonys GaaS adventure crashed and burned mid launch. Out of the 12 gaas games they said they would release by 2025, only two launched. One flopped so hard it was un launched and the other was a massive success. But it was still just one game. 9 of them were canceled, and the last one marathon is on life support after a terrible beta.

They made $13 billion inspite of their gaas agenda, not because of it. 95% of their exclusives are single player. Gow and Spiderman 2 broke all previous sales records for Sony first party games before helldivers was even a thing.

They also benefited heavily from once in a generation games back to back to back with Elden Ring, hogwarts and helldivers shattering sales records the last few years. Not to mention free exclusives like of huge third party games like baldurs gate 3, and wukong thanks to ms fuckups.
And us playstation users will benefit from the GAAS failure in the long term.

Sony are making ridiculous profits. They shouldn't be greedy. Ironically it would have been more profitable to put all that GAAS development money into single player games that would actually release.

They finally figured they don't have to lose money to compete and please people..

Blue Critter signing in b1ch.

Let's bring some reality to this early. Critical thinking questions, everyone:

1. Does this account for inflation?
2. What are their profit margins looking like before or after inflation?

We not adjusting for inflation now...

All of this info is available in the first post. PS4 gen had $9b operating profit on $107b sales = 8.41% margin. PS5 gen has $13b profit on $136b sales = 9.55% margin. Bringing up the potential impact of inflation undercutting Sony's financial results would be silly in this case because revenue and costs are presented together and would both be impacted (i.e. we have full context). From a nominal an operational efficiency standpoint, PlayStation 5 has categorically done better than PS2-PS4 generations. Only PS1 has better profit performance but some inefficiency is expected as you grow larger and gain market share; I (and investors, and most everyone else) would rather have 13b profits and 9.5% margin vs 3b profits with 12.5% margin.

So having super expensive subs, mtx and increasing hardware prices throughout the generation gives more profit. Who would have thought.
