Sony says it will continue to adjust PS Plus pricing as more players choose higher tiers

Sony Interactive Entertainment's CEO says PlayStation Plus prices will continue to change, noting that subscribers continue to opt for higher tiers despite price hikes.

In its latest business segment meeting, Sony noted that in financial years 2022, 2023 and 2024, the percentage of PlayStation Plus subscribers on higher tiers has continued to grow.

"Subscribers are increasingly choosing our Premium and Extra tiers, which now represent approximately 38% of total subscribers," SIE president and CEO Hideaki Nishino said during the presentation.

This was supported with a chart showing that while 17% of PS Plus subscribers were on the Premium tier and 13% were on Extra in FY2022, this had increased to 22% and 16% respectively by FY2024.

In a 'Fireside Chat' video released alongside the presentation, Nishino explained the situation further, addressing the topic of increased PlayStation Plus subscription fees.

"PlayStation Plus is highly valued by our players and continues to drive engagement," he said. "We're already seen a trend toward the option of higher tiers within our service, as evidenced by the subscriber mix we achieved in FY2024, where approximately 38% of players are now subscribed to PlayStation Plus Premium or Extra tiers.

"This is even after the global price increases we implemented in FY2023, and more recently, the local price increases in selected countries, to improve our pricing strategy across certain market clusters, and also to account for [foreign exchange] movements.

"These price increases were partly a result of increasing value we bring to the players, through the quality and diversity of content we continue to add, as well as investment in the features to improve the service further, such as player personalisation and enhanced content discovery.

"The PlayStation Plus service offers great value for our players, and we will continue to add more value and adjust our pricing strategy in a dynamic way to maximise profitability."

In September 2023, Sony increased 12-month PlayStation Plus subscription prices by as much as 35% in some regions, with the Premium tier increasing from $119 / £99 per year to $159 / £119.

Defending the decision at the time, Sony Interactive Entertainment's senior vice president and head of global marketing Eric Lempel said: "Like practically everything else in the world, we have to look at our pricing and we have to adjust to market conditions.

"I'm happy to say, unlike a lot of other subscription services out there, we haven't touched the PlayStation Plus pricing for 85% of the world in many years. So, this was the first time we did something there."

It wasn't to be the last, however, as in April 2025 PS Plus prices increased again in Canada, meaning a Premium subscription that had previously cost $139 per year, and had then increased in 2023 to $189, had risen even further to $224.

Both my psn and Xbox bottom level subs both reupped last week .. that was what $80 a piece ? 👎

Fun fact, I let my PS Plus subscription expire back in December.

Haven't missed it one iota. Gamepass expired last month. Haven't missed it either.
Cancelled my entire subscription renewal the day after increase. Don't play online, physical backlog is too big and premium games library is abysmal.

Fuck them

Eh, I'll be letting mine lapse when it runs out early next year. Haven't played an online game in ages and can't remember the last time I played one of the free games 🤷

No value in it anymore for me at least.

I always wait till Black Friday to renew my subscription. I also go on Shopto to get wallet cards. All in all, I'm probably saving around £40 to £45 a year when I do it that way.

In hindsight, makes me glad I skipped PS5 hardware.
I got some of their games on Steam, so that's enough for me, without being in their "ecosystem".
This isn't the same Sony that led me to purchase PS1-4. Kind of disappointed, really. In the end, not a big deal.

I think i'll let my Premium sub lapse and go the Essential instead.

The emulation quality of their Premium backwards compatible games is just plain bad. The lineup is also lacking. They'll have shit like the Star Wars Episode 1 game but will then take literally years to put stuff people actually want on the service.

I also have never found myself playing any of the Extra games.

Essential seems like the best value since you still get the free monthly games and can play online.

Once cloud streaming is open to my entire library I will get that top tier of plus. Until then essential is fine with me. I usually upgrade to extra with a few months left in my 12 month sub and go through some games.

Mark my words, they will set PSN store game prices and never lower them again like Nintendo since there's no competition for Sony.
Since I'm no longer subscribed to PS Plus I found time to play games I actually own and not random rented shit which more often misses than it hits.
Subscription model does not work with game services, at least give shit for free like Epic and let me keep it forever. Wait, I can't since I still need PS Plus.

Let mine expire last year and haven't looked back. Waste of money as I'm barely using my PS5 at this point. I'm thinking I sell/trade it in.

if you were gonna skip a playstation console iteration, the ps5 was definitely the one to skip, imo...

Just give me a tier for online gaming only. I don't give a fuck about their shitty free games. Of course it won't happen because Sony is greedy as hell.

My sub expired a couple of months after the price hike and I haven't bought a game either for my PS5 since or even played it much since. The pS6 will need some truly remarkable true exclusives to get me to go back at this point.

My basic bitch PS+ expired like two months after they originally increased the price, and i've never re-sub'ed. Now that some time went by, i am having a hard time believing how retarded it is to pay to play online in 2025. Like what? Never ever again.

Regardless of pricing, I'm out on their BS subs. As I move more and more to Steam, PS is becoming less and less relevant to me. Shame, as I was there for PS on day one, but it is what it is.

I've been gaming since 1985; I've seen it all at this point, and Sony is quickly rising on my shit list. Not yet on MS' or Nintendo's level, but rising nonetheless. I still cannot imagine my gaming life without PS, but my PS5 Pro is getting turned on less than ever. Whether it is their studios putting out less games than ever, their ridiculous subs that lock cloud saves behind paywalls for those of us that don't give two shits about multiplayer, or their focus on GAAS, Sony has lost the plot; who they are. I'm tired of it.

Mine expired a few months ago and I have no plans to renew it unless the value is there or there's some must play multiplayer game. But now whatever that game is would have to be worth the price of the game and the cost of a PS+ sub and those games are going to be very few and far between.

Have plus since 2013, I don't want to let it expire but if they keep rising the price, the choice will be much easier to make

I've only ever had essential apart from 1 year of extra when I first got the PS5.

The price increase did put me off but using shopto cheap credit as well as money off from PS Stars I still re subbed.

Not so sure if I will again this year tho ..mainly do it for the free games as do get some good ones tbf

Only feature I miss from PS+ are the cloud saves. some things in games I do not want to redo should I lose that data.
For me disabling the option to copy local saves for PS5 games shows just how greedy Sony is. It's supposed to be a security feature, yet you can still encrypt save files or plug in a usb drive to your console and that's not a problem. But who knows, maybe copying screenshots & clips will end up behind a paywall when PS6 arrives.

Sony being more and more greedy made my decision to drop PS+ a lot easier.
