TOKYO--Sony Computer Entertainment is taking some extra measures to protect the name of its next-generation gaming machine, the PlayStation 3. The company recently trademarked the term "P53" (Pee Fifty-Three) in the Japan Patent Office, assigning it the official PS3 logo. Sony's action, although obscure, is reasonably understandable, since P53 looks strikingly similar to PS3, the abbreviation for its PlayStation 3 console. Sony trademarked the term "PLAYSTATIOn" as well, also giving it the PS3 logo. Sony also trademarked some terms it might be using for the Cell chip in the near future, including "Broadband Processor Architecture" (BBPA) and "Cell Broadband Engine" (CBBE).

I guess MS' cute strategy irked some of Sony.

The only reason Microsoft chose "360" was because they didn't want an Xbox 2 up against a PlayStation 3. Yes, I think MS is that insecure about their console (but they dont have to be)

That's the name of a Metroid title listed in an article pre-E3 that was right about new things like Super Mario Strikers, and the new Batallion Wars name. The only two things I remember it listing that didn't show up were Metroid Dread, and Nintendo Tetris.

Considering Konami doesn't list the Metal Gear name before "SUBSISTENCE" in the list above, it looks like that article's substantiated even more. The only thing left to wonder about is what happened to Tetris.

They already trademarked PS3 a long time ago, around the same time the PS2 was released. I think they trademarked up to PS16 or something.

Both the P53 and PLAYSTATIOn trademarks are because of the font they are using. The N at the end is an enlarged n rather than a proper N. Everything else is a capital letter. Having said that, they haven't registered PLAY5TATION, so they missed one
