Sony's Gamescom Media Briefing On "Release Plans for PlayStation 4"

New title announcements:
- Tearaway
- Puppeteer
- Until Dawn
- Rain
- Killzone : Mercenary ( technically not new, but official name )

There were also the usual trailers of already announced titles (TLoU, GoW, etc ) and a few other hardware/service related stuff, but last year was pretty good.

That reminds me, this would be a good time to deliver an update on Until Dawn, maybe reveal it on the PS4?

what if sony are actually in really bad financial shape and they're not making any more ps4 games and the exclusives are ps1 games being released on psn for ps4??

20 AAA exclusives in year 1 and we only know of 5, with potentially not many more to be shown at gamescom.

Not even Nintendo can do 20 AAA 1st-party exclusives in one year, much less Sony.

At best, only half of it will be AAA, maybe more depending on 3rd-party partners, and the rest would be your usual filler titles like Move, PSN, XDev, etc.

Mind you, had 'Playstation Vita Pets' be a PS4 title... that would've been counted due to XDev's role in the development of that game.

what if sony are actually in really bad financial shape and they're not making any more ps4 games and the exclusives are ps1 games being released on psn for ps4??

What if Kaz is insane, forging Sony's financial books, and has secretly been giving all our information to NSA?

They should go the whole hog and relaunch the Binatone console while they're at it.

I would like there to be talk of the future also. But I get the feeling that Sony is laser focused on the launch.

The thing is that while it sucks right now, if true (and verendus says it's not and he knows more than I) it will suck for now. But later this year and early next year Sony will be dropping bomb after bomb while Microsoft will be talking about Halo and Titanfall which they unveiled the prior June...
By bombs you mean games which are coming to the Xbone and PC anyways?

Yoshida said otherwise....didn't he?

So how's the hype train today? (after the mini-drama)

Slow train, high speed rail or hyperloop?
I don't know anymore.

It's running backwards!

Hype direction is reversing but hype distance is pumping on!

When early next year? VGAs? GDC? Fairly minor events until you get to E3. If you'd be happy with trickling stuff out via website news stories throughout 1H14 that'd be ok but not great.

And if you hold off until E3 you risk squashing a lot of information in and diluting the impact of each title.

30+ exclusives in development by WWS for the PS4.
20 in the first year.
12/20 is new IP.

No mention of AAA, just that those exclusives had WWS's involvement in one way or another, be it an wholly internal team project ( like Uncharted ), a cross-development project ( like what Sony always do with Level-5 ), or even a minimal supervision/support role. ( SSM's role on The Order : 1886 )

For example, Sony Santa Monica is credited in Hohokum as well. If that was a PS4 exclusive title, that would've been part of the exclusives cited by Yoshida.

I predict Gamescom for Sony will be similar to E3 this year, they wont reveal that many games but they will steal the show with a favorable date and earlier than expected launch (October).

They will take advantage of MS stumbles, who had to cut down the amount of countries they could launch in this year, they will promise it will launch in Scandinavia, Holland, Russia and all the other "Tier 2" Europe countries. Much like they won E3 with their price and saying No to MS like policies.

The launch date of the PS4 will overshadow the entire event, much like the prices and DRM of PS4 and Xbox One overshadowed the entirety of E3

Its a weird thing how games have taken a backseat almost, at Sony's reveal it was the 8 gig GDDR ram that was the big surprise, at MS reveal it was the DRM, always online and TV TV TV! that stole that show, and like i said at E3 it was all of those combined.

Their 3 best and most acclaimed studios, Naughty Dog, Santa Monica and Polyphony digital have not shown anything but that intro for The Order, they are keeping their cards to their chest, as they will need them later on.

precisely.

microsoft has shown their consumers games that are console-sellers....sony has not. like i said, after being unimpressed with sony's e3 conference, mortimer's news about lack of game announcements is disappointing IMHO.

It's disappointing as a fan of playing video games, who religiously follows a gaming forum desperate for news of new games, OF COURSE. BUT, Microsoft has "shown their consumers games that are console-sellers" is debatable at best, and they have also shown everyone that they abandoned 1st party support of the 360 while Sony is still putting "system sellers" and game of the year candidates on the PS3.

It just seems to me to be incredibly short-sighted for anyone to ignore the fact that Sony literally owns the largest, most diverse development stable in the world, while Microsoft is leaning HEAVILY on 3rd party exclusivity to try to win the launch window.

But hell, I'm a Sony fan, for this very reason. They still support the PS2 for christ's sake.

I know we're rearing for news here, but this PS4 launch lineup would be a concern if there was no sign of games on the horizon, and yet we factually know that Naughty Dog (BOTH TEAMS), Sony Santa Monica (BOTH TEAMS), and Guerilla all are working on games for the PS4. Sony knows this.

Just imagine being Sony right now: you have built this massive lead on your major competitor, you have public favor and pre-order figures completely on your side, and you haven't even brought out any of your shiniest, biggest new toys. They hold all the cards and Microsoft was forced to show it's hand at E3 and that's it, mostly. No tricks up the sleeve.

I get it, I'm eagerly awaiting to hear what in the heck these studios are working on, but they're working on something, and they have an insanely positive track record.

I'm not saying that but prior to PS4's reveal and E3 insiders were going on about how Sony were supposed to drop to some huge bombs there.....

there wasn't much of anything being said game wise pre reveal in feb actually and not really alot about games pre e3 either. Most of the game rumors pre E3 were ms and EA focused. Sony dropped the no drm bomb thats about it

.......................................................................................................................................................................

edit:iirc the 2 games that were talked about by more than one sony insider were ffxv and kh3 and they both showed up

Mortimer or verendus or any other insider, what have you heard about agent? im hoping to see that its still exclusive and coming to ps4.

sony pls.

Third party exclusives matter - Titanfall is arguably the biggest exclusive and even if it is timed for one year, if it turns out to be as good as people think it is its going to move units.

It'll be interesting to see what Sony sends out against Titanfall next year.

Third party exclusives matters to people who have long already made up their mind on which system to purchase. 6 months into a new generation is ridiculously early. If you're an early adopter for TitanFall, which is on two different platforms btw, odds are you were going to be one regardless

The Last of Us was revealed at the VGAs. That garnered a TON of attention. That worked out okay.

There will be another AAA PS4 exclusive announced at the VGAs this year, you can absolutely bank on that, and it will most likely be from either Naughty Dog or SSM. People will eat that up and Microsoft will have absolutely no answer to it. That won't just be okay, that will be a marketing coup for Sony.

Finally, a post that nails it.

This idea that Xbone has a superior games line up is bullshit for a few reasons. The first and most important is that Microsoft have gone much deeper into their pipeline than Sony from their internally developed titles and from their published titles. MS have shown a whole bunch of games for 2014 and potentially a couple from 2015. That was done to combat their awful launch conference which was all TV TV TV.

On the flip side, Sony have shown all of 5 games from their internal development studios or published titles, three are launch titles, one is dated for early next year and the final (The Order) is due in "2014". If there are people stupid enough to believe that Sony will have just two games for the whole of 2014 then they really deserve to have an Xbone. At this time it feels like there are people out there looking for an excuse to remain in the Xbox camp and this nebulous idea that Sony don't have any PS4 games while MS have loads of Xbone ones seems to be the main one used.

I'm not saying Sony are going to drop massive bombs on Tuesday, I honestly haven't got a clue. All I'm saying is that, for now, comparing the games line up between Xbone and PS4 is not a proper comparison, not while MS have gone so deep into their pipeline and Sony are holding everything back on purpose to ensure 2014 has a steady flow of announcements. From what I have heard, senior management don't want a repeat of PS3 where they turned up to multiple trade shows reannouncing the same games from E3 2005/6 because they had already used all of their shots up and shown titles all the way out to 2008.

Sony have no need to blow their load anyway, they are so far ahead in terms of pre-orders without showing their final hand that MS need to be very worried. Also, given that MS have shown so many of their 15 titles already they have very little left for 2014 to announce at the VGAs and E3 next year that is completely new. Especially if they are going to show the Black Tusk game at Gamescom (a mistake IMO).

Really what it comes down to is whether you trust the team that fixed the PS3 and brought us the PS4 (Cerny, Shu, Andy, Kaz) or the one that fucked with the 360 in the last few years and fucked up Xbone and were forced to make a bunch of 180s to make it appealing (Spencer, Harrison, Penello).

Teasers would be the way to go.
Gamers could have 100 page threads about a picture of Drake swinging on a lamppost, and Sony could still do a big announcement later in the year.

and Stig for that matter..I mean it's been so damn long

If you read some of the interviews the studio has been doing over the years since GOWIII you can figure out it's something more "social" and with a big community focus. But knowing SSM it's still going to have the hardcore appeal.

Man, I understand, but I hate it at the same time. XBONE users have Titanfall that I will forever be jealous about, even if it's 1 year exclusive. And I KNOW it will be on pc / 360, but for someone like me who doesn't have a good pc or a 360, its an xbone exclusive in that sense.

Sony has nothing even close to that that peaks my interest IMHO. Absolutely nada.

Ridicule MS for paying for timed exclusivity, but for a HUGE MP gamer like myself, they got a HUGE gem that I won't be able to play until 2015 :(

I could understand Sony's hesitance on announcing games early. Look at what we had to deal with with The Last Guardian--it missed its release by a generation.

I don't know, to be honest. I have no idea what their schedule is. Shit, I still don't know for sure what will and won't be at gamescom... and neither do the people putting it on because that stuff is pretty fluid.

My educated guesses are as follows:

*Something big at gamescom other than the launch date. Someone said that Guerrilla's new IP would be there - of all the games coming that one makes the most sense especially considering that gamescom is more 'home turf' for guerrilla than E3 or TGS.
*TGS will have some big news. I don't know what. I hoped we would hear about FROM's demon's souls-ish game but I'm not certain it will be this soon- though i've talked to people who are certain it will be there. There will be more there.
*There will be a launch event. I could see announcing a game at that.
*I think the VGAs is where they announce the biggest stuff. Uncharted 4 for sure. SSM's game if it's far enough along. Last Guardian PS4 (though this could be at TGS), etc.
*GDC early next year I think we'll see the first vita redesign. I think we will see some PS4 non game stuff including gaikai. I think we'll see stuff like MLB and Sly 5 and what their smaller teams are working on. We may also hear about a second ND project by then. *Media Molecule as well if that's not a GDC surprise.
*E3 next year I think the PS4 version of GT6 is shown. More Uncharted 4. Verendus third party super-game, and shit we can't imagine yet.

Again, this is conjecture. Slightly educated conjecture... but conjecture none the less.

Also Everquest Next, Planetside 2, DCoU, etc.... all the SOE stuff.... at some point, who knows when. I wish liverpool and zipper were still around :/

Dude, it's Source engine. It will run acceptably on any laptop with a modern CPU the integrated GPU.

man, why doesn't Sony have one Japanese studio that's dedicated to making a JRPG that will rival Final Fantasy in budget. Surely that would sell?

They have to know that their audience is starved for a AAA console jrpg

Verendus says they're in the process of building a team for exactly that reason.

I can't speak for Swishh, but I have a shitty laptop that can only capably get me on the internet and word processing, and stutters running photoshop. I have a PS3 and I have Steam. All I can play on Steam are the most basic puzzle, adventure, and platformers, essentially. I can't afford a new computer AND a PS4. I like Sony exclusives, playing with a controller on a big TV in the living room with my girlfriend and dog on the couch next to me, and so it's just not feasible for me, now or in the near future, to have any means of playing a AAA game not available on PS3 or PS4. I completely understand where he's coming from, even if I don't share his excitement about Titanfall.

That's what it will be, no doubt.

Well, I don't know about integrated storage. But the rest of it...

I know you've all but guaranteed a Vita price drop at Gamescom, but any word of them adjusting the proprietary memory card prices? I imagine Sony are hesitant because those suckers have to be HUGELY profitable.

Well, I don't know about integrated storage. But the rest of it...

I figure they will wait for Toshiba to get 28nm up and running properly before making a new Vita Lite edition. Otherwise making it smaller is just reducing the internal space rather than shrinking the components and cooling.

I also hope they use the same type of LCD screen as in the new Xperia Z Ultra. I figure SCE will leverage SMC's huge supply chain to procure cheap 4.3" 540p LCD screens, again given there are multiple suppliers (JDI, Sharp, AUO, LG Display) the cost of the screen will go down significantly (from ~$45 to ~$20) if they switch to a multiple supplier part rather than stick to a single supplier part (Samsung, RGB OLED).

I know you've all but guaranteed a Vita price drop at Gamescom, but any word of them adjusting the proprietary memory card prices? I imagine Sony are hesitant because those suckers have to be HUGELY profitable.

At some point, and I don't know if it's gamescom or not, they will release a 64gb card and the rest of the cards will be slid down a slot (with the 4gb being phased out). So $45 for 32gb (assuming that Amazon's current lower-prices hold up) is much easier to swallow. It's not great... but that will atleast put it close to PSP memory card prices (though still far off SD cards).

Surely they wouldn't get rid of the OLED? That's one of the best things about the Vita.

My assumption is that it will be 2 skus. They are phasing out the 3g. So a $200 OLED and $150ish non-OLED.

Purely guessing here... well other than about phasing out the 3g, That's definite (and announced already I think).

Bravia Engine™?

That's a software addition to Android. Triluminous is in the hardware (quantum dot). Expands the colour gamut of a regular 8bit panel to around 10bit.

Surely they wouldn't get rid of the OLED? That's one of the best things about the Vita.

It's also the only component that will never drop in price because there is only one supplier. There is literally no reason for Samsung to drop the price for Sony because they know Sony have nowhere else to go if they want RGB OLED screens.

The new LCDs are amazing though so I wouldn't be too worried. The AH-IPS type Sony use in the Z Ultra is, IMO, the best screen currently on the market and better than the OLEDs from Samsung. HTC use the same screen in the One and soon in the One Max. Sony will be using it in their i1 second half Xperia flagship as well.

Right now, the most important thing for Sony is to cut the cost of the Vita so they can get the price down, plus procuring some decent third party software like GTA and real, mainline COD.

I can't see them getting rid of OLED and I can't see it being possible to make it smaller while still making it feel comfortable in your hands. I'm not liking the sound of this.

My guess:

Integrated memory
Bigger memory cards
Cheaper production costs (but not noticeable externally)
Maybe just slightly thinner but nothing more.
Cheaper price point

Would you be opposed to it being thinner and lighter? Serious question, as that plays into comfortability and feel, and I don't own a Vita.

I take smaller to mean 'overall'. As it stands it's about as perfect as it can get. Smaller and the orientation of buttons and analogue sticks would become problematic.

Purely guessing here... well other than about phasing out the 3g, That's definite (and announced already I think).

I figured two SKUs as well. OLED+4G - $299, LCD+Wifi - $149. 4G has low enough latency and high enough bandwidth for multiplayer anywhere. I think that's a good compromise. A premium and profitable high end SKU as well as a low end cheapie that breaks even.

My guess:

Integrated memory
Bigger memory cards
Cheaper production costs (but not noticeable externally)

That stuff doesn't happen by magic, components have to change or shrink for costs to go down. The Vita itself has been such a failure that SCE are not in the position to squeeze supplier margins to cut the cost like Apple do with iPhone (or Sony with Xperia for that matter). To make the Vita cheaper, they need to use cheaper parts, which to me means LCD because the OLED is still very expensive, around a fifth of the BoM, most expensive single component. The smartphone market has also shown that people don't really give a shit about OLED vs LCD.
