Sony's Gamescom Media Briefing On "Release Plans for PlayStation 4"

I am hoping and expecting from Sony to give us at least one big megaton before the launch. I was hoping for some big AAA game announcement, but I guess an october release date will be enough to keep MS at a distance for now.

Their fanbase doesn't need it. They got the price, the hardware, the no drm, and promises of great games yet to come. It's worked so far.

That stuff doesn't happen by magic, components have to change or shrink for costs to go down. The Vita itself has been such a failure that SCE are not in the position to squeeze supplier margins to cut the cost like Apple do with iPhone (or Sony with Xperia for that matter). To make the Vita cheaper, they need to use cheaper parts, which to me means LCD because the OLED is still very expensive, around a fifth of the BoM, most expensive single component. The smartphone market has also shown that people don't really give a shit about OLED vs LCD.

I'm no components expert, but is it possible for Sony to lower the CPU/GPU cost of the Vita as it is?

The screen, as you said, can always be replaced with a cheaper one, though it can only come with a redesign due to what is probably a thicker screen compared to OLED, but I don't know if Sony can find any other wiggle room for its internals to cut cost.

Man, I understand, but I hate it at the same time. XBONE users have Titanfall that I will forever be jealous about, even if it's 1 year exclusive. And I KNOW it will be on pc / 360, but for someone like me who doesn't have a good pc or a 360, its an xbone exclusive in that sense.

Sony has nothing even close to that that peaks my interest IMHO. Absolutely nada.

Ridicule MS for paying for timed exclusivity, but for a HUGE MP gamer like myself, they got a HUGE gem that I won't be able to play until 2015 :(

Then why not get an Xbone instead of the PS4?

If you think you wont be able to enjoy having a ps4 this year then why buy it? Exclusives have been there for ages. If you cant afford another system, then you just have to deal with it that you wont be able to play some games even if you really want to. We cant have it all if we cant afford it.

I was bummed about Bayonetta 2 on its announcement, but since i will never ever buy a WiiU, i just ignored any B2 news to lessen the blow. And now I really dont give a shit about that lol.

''We've never been first. We've never been cheapest.''

I know Wii U technically does make this true but I still find it funny damnit :(

It depends on whether Toshiba (Sony's fab partner) have got 28nm working properly yet or not.

The new AH-IPS panels have about the same thickness as SAMOLED+ (the screen type being used in the Vita, RGB OLED) because they both use the same TFT-type backplane and have the same glass front requirement for the touch screen. If Sony were to move to IGZO backplanes then there would be a thickness saving, but again, IGZO is a single supplier product (Sharp) so there would be few savings to be made there.

If Toshiba have 28nm CMOS ready and Sony opt for AH-IPS from JDI that alone is around $40 off the BoM without taking into account lesser cooling, probably a smaller battery and a simpler main board. Done right Sony could price a Vita Lite at $149 and still break even on the hardware but it will mean compromises to "dat OLED".

As a big Sony fan I must say that the reveal of some big AAA title would be perfect, just to seal the deal and show us what we can expect in 2014.

Microsoft got a lot of mileage early this gen due to 360 titles being shown only 12 months or so before release as I recall, while Sony floundered for quality titles. It's hardly the same situation, but if Sony keep their powder dry somewhat for launch (and exclusives aside, there's lots of great games coming this year on PS4), they could be in a similar position for 2014.

Those who haven't taken the pre-order plunge yet (and who are now probably too late for either system) may feel the PS4 lags behind the Xbox1 in software, but that impression can change very swiftly if Sony have the ammunition ready. By the time systems sales are beginning to slow, Sony can kick up a gear while Microsoft may struggle to keep up.

I also see no problem with announcing games outside major events - it's worked well for them for a while now and means new games don't have to share the limelight with other titles or platforms.

I expect release date in October, a sony kind of family share thing announcement and a Day One bundle including a free game in the countries the One is being delayed.

This and the announce of some of the 15 of 20 IPs to be released in 2014

precisely.

microsoft has shown their consumers games that are console-sellers....sony has not. like i said, after being unimpressed with sony's e3 conference, mortimer's news about lack of game announcements is disappointing IMHO.

Then it's even easier to pick Xbox One instead.

That it's an RPG. I think that was rumored at some point, but other than that I dunno.
This is the sort of thing I'm wanting to see, as much as I love Sony's first party franchises and I can't wait to see what happens with them on PS4 I'm really looking forward to seeing brand new stuff from the studios too.

I think most of Sony's studios now have at least two teams don't they? I know they'll shortly have three different consoles to support but hopefully it means we'll start seeing new stuff too.

Famousmortimer, when you expressed that you heard Ueda San renewing a contract, is that solely to pursue the Last Guardian adventure or were you suggesting he could return to Sony?

More wrong than right in this thread.

A new challenger appears!

Never before have three days served as such an insurmountable gap.

...save perhaps for every other big name games expo for the past since they've started.

When early next year? VGAs? GDC? Fairly minor events until you get to E3. If you'd be happy with trickling stuff out via website news stories throughout 1H14 that'd be ok but not great.

And if you hold off until E3 you risk squashing a lot of information in and diluting the impact of each title.

Gamescom
Santa Monica IP

TGS
Last Guardian

VGA
Guerilla Games new IP
Uncharted 4

GDC
Media Molecule new IP

There you go, something like this would be good

I'm really looking forward to Gamescom now, hopefully they really wow us, and hopefully they focus on new games rather than already announced ones in the presser.

Not much talk of Studio London in here. Wasn't it leaked that they were working on an action orientated title for PS3 not so long ago? Maybe that's moved to next gen?

I'm expecting at least one announcement from them at Gamescom.

Nothing special at all. The guy calls GameStop and they just confirm that they have Uncharted listed for 16th February 2014 but the date is a placeholder. They are just sure that an Uncharted will come out for the PS4 and that it'll come out around the same time as the other parts did i.e. around end of 2014. Other than that he told him to wait for Gamescom.

Well wonderbook seems to be at Gamescon so I'm sure Studio London will be around.

I don't believe none of the insiders here, I think no one knows shit this Gamescom. I am going to stick with my original prediction

PS4
Killzone Shadowfall Multiplayer
inFamous Second Son new power unveil and boss fight
The Order 1866 gameplay
Housemarque PSN game
AR or Move game by London or Zindagi
Santa Monica new IP reveal or MediaMolecule new IP

PS3
LittleBigPlanet 3
Until Dawn

Vita
Price drop
Uncharted GA2
Assassins Creed Liberation 2

Cheers for that :)

Given what the focus of London Studio has been for the past few years, I guess a little bit of skepticism is there.

It would be great to see a new trajectory for Studio London for PS4, but until we see a core title materialise from them, they're the Singstar and PSEye studio. :(

Am I the only one who loves the different personailties of our Sony insiders?

Venderus :- Curt, to the point, has a dim view of anything nintendo, doesnt really seem excited about anything. Just business.

FamousMort:- Everyman joe, in a position of privilege considering he doesnt work in the industry, wants to be wowed and excited like the rest of us, a fan not a fanboy.

GopherD :- Probably knows the most but says the least, loves the social experiment that is gaf, wont be drawn into giving more than most cryptic of hints.

The three of these guys make every big playstation thread enjoyable to read. The differing approaches make this feel less like managed community outreach (which it may be) and more like average guys giving their input off their own back.

well done guys :)

Well they were developing both Eight Days and The Getaway 3 at some point. Shame they got canned,

Conflicting information is cool.

It isn't conflicting, but the leaks that it's a fantasy setting has led people to immediately assume RPG when that isn't necessarily true.

To me the biggest suggestion that it's an RPG comes from what they've been doing with the Killzone: Shadow Fall engine. Opening it up, building quest structure into the world. Focusing a previously corridor shooter franchise on those elements implies a need for their PS4 engine to be more expansive than their PS3 engine.

Now maybe that's just a design choice specific to Shadow Fall, but I wouldn't be surprised if this is a "two birds, one stone" equation for GG where Shadow Fall is more open because it not only adds a new wrinkle to the KZ franchise but also advances a lot of the tech needed for an even bigger, more expansive new IP in the oven.

I'm really looking forward to Gamescom now, hopefully they really wow us, and hopefully they focus on new games rather than already announced ones in the presser.
They are going to have a strong focus on the already announced titles, you can be sure of that.
1. Driveclub has a new demo being complied specifically for Gamescom, likely looking to erase the negativity regarding their E3 demo.
2. Killzone: SF's multiplayer is demoing there with 1 hr. groups to demo it. The KZ franchise has always been more successful from a MP standpoint in Europe than the U.S.. This is basically Sony's opening salvo in trying to make KZ:SF into an online shooter tent pole that can battle Titanfall as a system seller (with Planetside 2 as their second candidate, because Sony rarely fires just one arrow at a target if they can help it).

No matter what else they might reveal there will be a strong push for both of these games at Gamescom. They're from European developers, it's only a few months before release, and they've been starving the press on these two titles for a reason. This is the show where they fully introduce them to the public and begin the press walk throughs and heavy media circulation of both titles.

TGS is where you'll likely see more new software, as SCEJ should have quite a few irons in the fire. Allan Becker isn't sitting on his hands over there just watching Cerny make Knack. We might see TLG re-introduced there. We might see the rumored From/Miyazaki collaboration with SCEJ. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a new Gravity Rush from Siren or a new Soul Sacrifice from Inafune. They'll likely have various other partnerships and in-house titles on the way as well. That is our best chance to see a bunch of new IPs pre-launch. In December we'll likely see what Naughty Dog's Uncharted 3 team has been working on at the VGAs.

Other than that you can likely bet on The Order getting it's first really massive blow out at E3 next year. I'd bet on some additional press coverage and maybe some gameplay before then (maybe even at Gamescom) but nothing extensive. Santa Monica's next big IP might make it for Gamescom if it's a late 2014 title. If it's a 2015 title though I wouldn't expect it until next E3. Guerrilla Games' new IP is probably a Gamescom 2014 reveal.

I don't see Sony going the same route as MS and showing off 90% of their in-house projects all at once. Sony feels no pressure to prove a commitment to video games. They'll string out their announcements as it gives them the best media coverage and keeps the image of a software drought from cropping up.

Both of their most successful NA franchises were announced/revealed at the VGA's where they got TV exposure. GoW3 (who knows why) and The Last of Us.

No doubt they're saving what they're most confident about for December to reveal it there.
