Conflicting information is cool.
It isn't conflicting, but the leaks that it's a fantasy setting has led people to immediately assume RPG when that isn't necessarily true.
To me the biggest suggestion that it's an RPG comes from what they've been doing with the Killzone: Shadow Fall engine. Opening it up, building quest structure into the world. Focusing a previously corridor shooter franchise on those elements implies a need for their PS4 engine to be more expansive than their PS3 engine.
Now maybe that's just a design choice specific to Shadow Fall, but I wouldn't be surprised if this is a "two birds, one stone" equation for GG where Shadow Fall is more open because it not only adds a new wrinkle to the KZ franchise but also advances a lot of the tech needed for an even bigger, more expansive new IP in the oven.
I'm really looking forward to Gamescom now, hopefully they really wow us, and hopefully they focus on new games rather than already announced ones in the presser.
They are going to have a strong focus on the already announced titles, you can be sure of that.
1. Driveclub has a new demo being complied specifically for Gamescom, likely looking to erase the negativity regarding their E3 demo.
2. Killzone: SF's multiplayer is demoing there with 1 hr. groups to demo it. The KZ franchise has always been more successful from a MP standpoint in Europe than the U.S.. This is basically Sony's opening salvo in trying to make KZ:SF into an online shooter tent pole that can battle Titanfall as a system seller (with Planetside 2 as their second candidate, because Sony rarely fires just one arrow at a target if they can help it).
No matter what else they might reveal there will be a strong push for both of these games at Gamescom. They're from European developers, it's only a few months before release, and they've been starving the press on these two titles for a reason. This is the show where they fully introduce them to the public and begin the press walk throughs and heavy media circulation of both titles.
TGS is where you'll likely see more new software, as SCEJ should have quite a few irons in the fire. Allan Becker isn't sitting on his hands over there just watching Cerny make Knack. We might see TLG re-introduced there. We might see the rumored From/Miyazaki collaboration with SCEJ. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a new Gravity Rush from Siren or a new Soul Sacrifice from Inafune. They'll likely have various other partnerships and in-house titles on the way as well. That is our best chance to see a bunch of new IPs pre-launch. In December we'll likely see what Naughty Dog's Uncharted 3 team has been working on at the VGAs.
Other than that you can likely bet on The Order getting it's first really massive blow out at E3 next year. I'd bet on some additional press coverage and maybe some gameplay before then (maybe even at Gamescom) but nothing extensive. Santa Monica's next big IP might make it for Gamescom if it's a late 2014 title. If it's a 2015 title though I wouldn't expect it until next E3. Guerrilla Games' new IP is probably a Gamescom 2014 reveal.
I don't see Sony going the same route as MS and showing off 90% of their in-house projects all at once. Sony feels no pressure to prove a commitment to video games. They'll string out their announcements as it gives them the best media coverage and keeps the image of a software drought from cropping up.
