Sony's Gamescom Media Briefing On "Release Plans for PlayStation 4"

so agent isn't dead and we are about 11 hours away from the presser.. hype lvl rising.

now if Infamous gets kicked to launch day I might just die lol

I think you're the first PS+ subscriber I've seen on this board that doesn't defend Sony on this.

Really? I've seen plenty of posts along the lines of "I like PS+, but putting multiplayer behind the paywall was a shitty move." I know you've got diehard Sony fans that will defend the move, but there's still plenty who see it as unnecessary, especially when Sony will likely get plenty more subscribers in the upcoming gen in the first place.

I'll say this much though - if first-party games start skimping on dedicated servers after this, I'd imagine there'll be just a few folks with minor resentment toward the move.

Hahaha, man, Infamous isn't getting kicked
imo
. It's just not happening man. I'm sorry. I wish it were. That's just not how the world works.

And when I learned that sony was charging for online I said "dumb." I hated the "well it doesn't affect me" people when we were arguing about DRM so I'm not going to take the "well I have PS+ anyway so it doesn't affect me" approach to paying for online. On a literal level it doesn't affect me - sure - but it's shitty for people it does affect and there's no reason to make excuses for Sony. It's a cash grab. We can argue that microsoft makes worse cash grabs but that's not the topic...
I'd at least like to see Sony break the PS+ subs into tiers now, so one can at least choose between "original" that doesn't include online MP and ++ or whatever they'd like to call it and include online MP in that. At least give existing PS+ subscribers like myself the choice.

But ultimately I see the F2P exception largely marginalizing the MP paywall for many. I almost expect some of the bigger MP hits like COD or BF to go F2P in another iteration or two.

can you explain why he got banned? i'm a new member, and I don't want to get banned so I need to know what he did so that I make sure I don't do the same.

It wasn't so much what he said as it was where he said it. This thread is clearly about the PS4. It started as talking about release plans but has naturally transitioned into basically the Sony Gamescom Hype thread. To come in here and start arguments is bannable.

If it was a thread about the differences between MS and Sony - what he said would have been fair game and I don't think a mod would have batted an eyelash at it.

Either that or his very strong pro-microsoft stance in every thread got a mod to check his IP and found out he was a viral marketer. Evidently after E3 there were tons of juniors with similar IPs that all were coming from the same building - a building bish looked up and found out that it housed a viral marketing company. The bans came quick and hard after that - it was pretty damn funny. It kinda scared the legit MS fans though because to the outside eye it seemed like if you said something positive about MS you got banned.

And now i'm totally off topic and am going to get banned. I FELL IN YOUR TRAP!

Might just be me, but is anyone else looking forward to what Microsoft has to say in a few hours? I'm a Sony boy at heart and am already paying off my PS4 preorder, but I still want to see how Microsoft is countering the blows they have been enduring since May.

They arent coming I thought?

Wait, so Agent is still happening by Rockstar?

I still don't understand how Rockstar owes Sony, and how Sony has let them go. I'm sure I'm oversimplifying it, but I never understood what that mess was about.

Agent isn't dead? Color me surprised.

Of course.

I have my preferences - and they side with Sony in the console world (though I've been a PC gamer since my first 286 sometime around 1990)... but i try not to be irrational. Sony does stupid shit. Microsoft does good shit. Like everyone shitting on Microsoft for potentially having FIFA as a pack-in... I didn't understand that at all. I thought it was a good idea for MS. It adds $60 of value and likely only costs them about half of that (buying in bulk). It's smart and it takes a bit of sting of the price. It doesn't mean MS wins the launch or that Sony is doomed - but it's ok to look at things like that and say "Smart."

Awesome post. If more people thought like you we might actually get a 180 from Sony too. I think way too many defends the whole thing quite blindly just because they like everything else about the console. Sony did so many things right that they've almost managed to make that one wrong thing seem perfectly right too. Atleast judging by the talk around here, we'll see what happens when the mainstreams finds out about it.

I want a reboot of a PS1 or PS2 franchise. Sony seems to be making us very nostalgic for those games again, as evidenced by the design choices and overall marketing of the PS4. I'm 17 (kind of young, I know) and would love to play a modern day version of something like Ape Escape. Only real memory I have of it was playing a demo on a PlayStation Underground disc in the late 90's.

I'd love a new Ape Escape. Like a real one and not that move/railshooter nonsense. Also, launch titles that aren't stupid bullshit.

I'm certainly interested! This whole console race has been one big game of hardball! Even though, admittedly, I'm swinging for Sony this gen, I love to see both...batters at the...plate?

I'm not sure where that analogy was going but I think you get my drift.

Thanks for the explanation. Mort, go out on a limb here, if you were told there would be 1 unannounced AAA exclusive PS4 title announced tomorrow, what would be your guess as to what that would be?

*Also, does anyone know a Gamescom stream that will allow me to view in 240p? (my internet is horrid)

Wait, so Agent is still happening by Rockstar?

I still don't understand how Rockstar owes Sony, and how Sony has let them go. I'm sure I'm oversimplifying it, but I never understood what that mess was about.

Apparently L.A. Noire is the culprit. It was once announced as a PS3 exclusive and was funded by SCEA. Rockstar then somehow took over L.A Noire and offered a PS3 exclusive to Sony to compensate this. Don't exactly understand it in detail.

Agent isn't dead.

So, like, are we just going to keep posting in here until the presser? I assume I'll sleep at some point but I can't even concentrate on playing games or reading right now. I just keep looking at this thread like something is going to happen.

Launch hype is a scary force.

Yep. All week all I wanted to do was play Tales Of Xillia on my days off. Day off comes and I find myself unable to play, hyped up and continuously refreshing gaf!!!

Might just be me, but is anyone else looking forward to what Microsoft has to say in a few hours? I'm a Sony boy at heart and am already paying off my PS4 preorder, but I still want to see how Microsoft is countering the blows they have been enduring since May.

Absolutely. The more heat MS brings the more Sony will have to do to make their customers happy. And I like being happy.

I love competition, it helps each company get better, but I want Sony to win this generation. Part of the fun of owning a PS2 was knowing you would almost never get shafted on a third party title and all of your friends would also have one. At least, that's how it happened here.

Also, PS2 had SOOOOOOOOOOO many obscure games. Hey, I actually liked Mister Mosquito.

Wait, so Agent is still happening by Rockstar?

Agent is something that the Houser's have been wanting to make since the PS2 days, so they aren't going to kill it. The big problem is that it sounds very ambitious and GTA is always going to take priority over a new IP at Rockstar North.

Mister goddamn Mosquito...

That's honestly one of the first titles I think off when people talk about Gen 8 possibly ushering a glorious return to mid-level, quirky titles (alongside top-level AAA and bottom-level Indies -- funding-wise).

Tough call.

I could see Guerilla's new IP since they are one of their biggest developers in Europe... but at the same time I know a lot two-team companies only like to show one game at a time so I could see it being kept dark until after KZ:SF launches (in november :P).

Xdev has something cooking but I don't know that it will be AAA.

Chances of Uncharted before the VGAs seems highly unlikely...

Anything japanese would be at TGS.

Really tough call. There's obviously games I don't know about. There's probably teams that I don't know about. Like, for instance, when Liverpool moved in with Evolution maybe they became a two team studio and Wipeout isn't dead. Now, I HAVE NOT HEARD EVEN A PEEP OF THAT FROM ANYONE. That's total conjecture on my part. But an announcement like that wouldn't surprise me. I think this gen we will see successful devs add second teams moreso than opening completely new studios. It's worked out really well for Naughty Dog and others in the last few years.

I guess my final answer is "something third party." And I don't know what that would be. But if I'm sony I want to show strong third party support and the lack of a big third party exclusive so far is a chink in their armor.

I can play Mario 64 or Jak and Daxter all day, every day... and while I don't expect Knack to be as great as those it will be really fun to revisit that style of game.

From what I have seen, I would not put Knack in the same gameplay category as Mario 64. There seems to be no real platforming or skill in traversing levels to be involved. Looks more like a simple brawler to me.

I too keep watching this thread needlessly, although I'm working graveyard shift so there's that excuse I guess...

I just want to say though I never would've expected the lead-up to this generation to be so one-sided.

I've been an Xbox gamer since the first one. I sold my PS2 to get an Xbox and never looked back. I've owned a grand total of EIGHT Xbox 360s, three of which I still own. I've logged around 25-30 hours a week on my 360 for the past 8 years... that's between 8,000-10,000 hours. 6,000+ hours of that, give or take, is on my current gamertag. I thought I would want to carry my gamertag persona with me as long as Xbox Live was up and running, hopefully indefinitely. So I created this gamertag (LifeExpectancy) back in 2008 in an attempt to have the "perfect" tag, completing the achievement list of every single game I played, which has reached a current tally of 275 games on this tag.

Please don't dismiss the above statements as pointless self promotion. I'm not saying all of this because I'm a die-hard MS fanboy or because I'm trying to be the next Stallion83. That isn't possible first off, and secondly my statements are meant to cast a light on what I'm about to say next...

I find myself all but certain of cancelling my XB1 preorder (or selling it on CL) and just gaming on the PS4. Even if all of MS's policy reversals stand and they don't do any re-reversals mid generation, it's just left such a sour taste in my mouth. I don't think they'll ever truly recover from the image destruction and consumer distrust they've done to themselves since May.

At the very least even if I keep my XB1 I think I'll wind up cancelling my XBL gold and just reverting to a silver account to play single-player only games going forward, making a PS4 my primary console and my only one for multiplayer gaming. They can take my gamerscore and shove it up their ass as far as I'm concerned, because all of this going down just makes me realize how much they've taken my focus away from gaming for enjoyment and turned it into a chore sometimes during this generation.

For every piece of DLC I purchased merely for (gamerscore completion)'s sake, for every year I paid for XBL with nothing to show for it but the occasional multiplayer match that I did more for achievements than for fun, for both of my RROD'd consoles, I both despise and thank MS. I despise them for making it apparent they never really did learn from their mistakes at the beginning of the 360's generation, and I thank them for making me realize and remember that gaming should first and foremost be about the joy of gaming, for making me realize that I need to move on and expand back into other platforms again.

I'm definitely interested in what they have to say, but with some trepidation rather than excitement. I always worry they'll do something which will impact franchises that I an currently play on PlayStation. I'm all for companies creating exclusive IP's for their platforms, what I don't like it companies interfering with established multiplatform franchises. Rightly or wrongly, I feel that Microsoft are more likely to do the latter.

I miss it so much. This "renaissance" Cerny is talking about can certainly be possible this generation. Indies are growing year by year and development costs have not substantially risen like they did going into this generation.

I also have fond memories of playing Metropolis Mania with my brother. Oh, and RPG Maker 2 and 3. AirBlade had its moments, as well.

True. I think it is more action oriented. Bad choice of game to compare it to... but I still feel like I will like it. It's a genre I love and my expectations are in check. I do think most people are going to hate it though and it's going to get cremated by the press.

I don't. I know they *are* happening at some point but no one was ever able to nail down when that would be.

I'm very hopeful for a good vita show tomorrow. I know I shouldn't be. I keep thinking it's going to happen and it keeps not happening (though gamescom last year was pretty good). And with the PS4 they obviously won't spend much time on it... but, man, I just feel like they are going to show a bunch of shit, drop the price and give it just a little spark. Not OMG VITA IS SAVED type stuff, but give it a pulse. Please Sony.
