Sony's management of the PS4 UI has been atrocious

The inability to delete useless app icons for software that I don't even have downloaded is crazy to me. It's the main thing that really bugs me.

The only two features I want are suspend and the ability to store all your games on your dashboard into a folder.

Other than that I greatly prefer the PS4's UI to the PS3, even if it isn't perfect. Atrocious is far from what I would describe it as.

The ui is great in terms of performance. Sony does look bad on the update front though. Granted a lot of the stuff ms was playing catch up on they are much more locked in to bringing useful updates.

Kind of feel like Sony is spending too much resources on features that are really only going to be used by a small percentage of their user base. Stuff like share play is neat but how many people really use it? While features that were in the PS3 are nowhere to be found.

I'm hoping that ps vue will open the floodgates for more media related features.

It's the best I have seen on consoles - U.I that is. Between ease of use, speed, and functional simplicity Sony hit a HR.

Mind you, the U.I itself could potentially be much, much better (specially if given an ability to organize things on the dashboard) but things don't go our pace.

As for feature sets - Sony has indeed taken its sweet time with some things. I am really looking forward to USB video playback.

The title of the thread is rivaling IGN clickbait headlines.

If you were able to put all your games into a folder people would think it's dull and bland even more. Haha. Having those rows of games fills in the UI. It's not perfect but i think it looks cool.

Blame Japan.

This is another reason I think consoles should have switched to standardized architecture and kept iterating on it at least a generation ago. The fact that the PS4 and Xbox One operating systems have to start from square one after all the work Sony and Microsoft did to the PS3 and 360 OSs is insane.

I loved the XMB, I hate the current system.

The library is clunky to navigate, the OS is slow, the voice commands aren't great either.

Just let me have it like I have my PS3 set up, let me organise all my games in folders and display them under a "Games" header, I have my PS3 set up to show my digital games under genre and it's perfect, I feel like playing MGS? I find them all under Stealth, I fancy playing CoD AW? I just go to FPS.

PS4 OS is slow? And you like XMB better?

PS4 OS destroys PS3s. Easier to navigate and ways faster and smoother. Jesus just go to PSN store on PS3 to confirm this shit. (In game XMB was always shit too)

As for features, yes Sony needs to add them way quicker and I blame their japanese division.

I don't know, the UI may be no frills but it does what I need it to do. I don't see how any of the current systems' UIs qualify as "atrocious" exactly.

Unacceptable by Sony. It was okay at launch, because it was stable and fast, and you imagined the necessary features wouldn't be long in coming. We're nearly a year and a half post-launch, and we're yet to have a meaningful update to the system.

Their update that added 'filters' was so fucking poor I was almost offended. The console is essentially perfect for me other than this one issue, so it drives me absolutely crazy. I'd take the XMB (or Vita bubbles, or Wii U OS) any day over what we have on PS4, any day.

I can understand being upset with Sony for not having suspend/resume a feature they touted 2 years ago. But..

I find the PS4 UI to be incredibly fast and (imo) compared to the PS3 and the XB1 Ui's, it's a godsend...

Xmb is the best UI the has ever been on a console. The PS4 UI is a step back but still very good. Speed wise there's never been a faster console UI.

it runs fast as hell and silky smooth which is all I could ask for coming from PS3. Love it.

Is it just me or are way too many things "atrocious" "abysmal" "disgusting" "gross" these days?

The click bait phenomenon goes beyond "news" outlets. Personally, the problem is that OPs don't get ridiculed as much because of their use. If that happens, while it won't extinguish the practice, it will reduce it.

I'd say no folders and major missing features that were promised qualifies

Opinions what are they

I enjoy the PS4 greatly in a lot of respects but Sony has proven to be pretty incompetent when it comes to managing the UI on the system as well as related features. It's ridiculous how features such as DLNA and suspending games that were promised have still not appeared getting close to a year and a half into the console's lifespan. The UI itself has also been pretty sad, it's slightly ridiculous that there is still no option to hide icons on the home screen (no thanks Sony I don't want to have share factory and music unlimited cluttering up the area) or create custom folders to actually organize icons. I thought xmb was bad but somehow they managed to top it and create an even more clunky interface. It's sad that the Vita has the best interface out of the Sony family by far at the moment.

Why is Sony so incapable of delivering on this front?

Please note the point of this thread is not to compare to the Xbox One, thanks.

When it comes to consoles, ps4 has the best UI in terms of useability, accesability and intuitivity ever. You feel that the xmb was bad, and think that the number of features slowly added is somehow derrogatory to the overall UI. In other words, you don't recognize good UI design and mix-up feature creep with quality.

I hear you on the slowness of their implementation, but its obvious what they've set out to achieve with this UI: speed and accesability and i personally rather have them take their time and implement new features without comprimising these design princibles.

I don't have a problem with the PS4 UI, but I tend to only focus on 1-2 games at a time so I don't jump around my library much. I understand that people may not like how the PS4 UI is set up, but I don't understand the complaints that it is slow. Mine is pretty snappy, maybe you have a bad HDD?

Also, I love my Vita, but the UI is crap. I pressed square just now thinking I've been missing out on something but nothing happened, no blue aura or anything. PS4 UI is much better IMO.

All i want is folders and media playback

And then ill organise those folders into categories just like the ps3 did, games, music, videos, pictures, tv, apps.

1. Inability to customize system app layout (delete/hide bloatware)
2. Inability to organize user content in folders
3. System applications that resort themselves to the front of the list even when never used
4. Omnipresent advertising in every facet of the system
5. "Activity feed" that is more advertising than activity
6. Inability even to pin favorite programs to front of program list
7. Any actual system management tools are practically hidden in nonsensical folders
8. Inability to delete demos from user's software list

It's insultingly blatant in its attempts to control the user experience to push services and adverts. It's the most primitive, least functional OS I've seen in a long time. It's about as well designed as the tiny printer management OS on a printer LCD.

Who cares if it animates smoothly. Its functionality is horrible.

1. DLNA - paraphrasing jeff_rigby, it'll come this year.

2. Suspend/resume. There's a wider issue in FreeBSD about getting a stable suspend/resume function working, and since Orbis is based on FreeBSD I'm guessing that's where the issue is coming from.

3. Frequency of updates. Waaayyyy back in the launch phase, Sony said that one of the things people had told them that annoyed them about the PS4 updates was both the frequency and seemingly random times they were done. They said 'We won't do as many, but they'll be bigger.' Since then everyone has whinged that there aren't enough etc etc, and Shawn Layden said after the issues that had with the 2.0 update they would be looking at more frequent but smaller updates in the future. This change might take time to happen, as the OS development roadmap was probably built around the original vision.

4. The OP should enable the option for limiting the number of items on the content screen. If they aren't using ShareFactory etc those icons will move the the end of the list (as in fact they will in the normal course of use. I've got the limit disabled and haven't seen the ShareFactory icon for ages as its at the end of my list)

I'm torn between this and the XMB. I like both as I like stripped down and simple UIs which don't do anything too flashy.

I don't understand what you are saying, I'm complaining about features missing, not feature creep. I can't think of a single thing the ps4 UI does better than xmb aside from being faster

The advertising thing is, I think, a US issue. I haven't seen any third party ads anywhere in the OS, and the only 'ads' that I do see are for Sony 1st party in the Activity Feed.

All the unused apps go to the end of the list. Which system applications are 'resorting' themselves to the front of the list for you?

XMB was great, ahead of its time even. I expected the PS4 UI to suffer as the library grew beyond the limits of the 15 item scroll, but it actually works better than I thought it would. There aren't many times when I feel like I have to go searching endlessly for anything. I really don't agree that there's anything "atrocious" about the experience. Sure, it would be better with user-made folders and some of the other things that Sony promised because nothing's ever perfect, obviously. But it does what it needs to do as a media-system UI which is let me navigate quickly to the things I tend to do most and quickly get out of the way once that's done.

That said, I really hope they're not still reserving 3 GB for this OS, because if they are and don't have anything significant planned at this point, it's a waste.

Music and movies, whatever those are called. It's been a month or so since I touched my PS4.

They seem to have a set spot in the list. Anything that isn't played for a day or two gets pushed behind that spot.

I know I'm in a minority here but I couldn't give a hoot about the UI... It's serviceable, fast and it gets me to games.

I bought the console for games.

Icons are ordered by most recently used. And unless you have the option disabled, it hides any more than 15 in the library view.

You just need to stop using them, or get more games.

When you say movies, do you mean the TV icon?

Regardless, I haven't seen the Music Unlimited, Shareplay or other non-gaming apps outside of the TV folder (because Netflix gets daily use) pretty much since they were added to the UI. I certainly haven't experienced what you have. Maybe its a regional thing?

Yeah it is pretty bad. They need to add an option to see last purchased in the Library. Also, my OS stalls for a few seconds whenever I log in for the first time.

Do a database rebuild about once a month and it'll usually fix that issue.

The OS is super fast for me. Also I'm a lucky one mine doesn't supposedly roar like a jet engine. As long as you use the games & apps you want idk why you would need sorting. But options are good.

I'd want Sony to have access to my games done the same way access to video/streaming apps. It makes zero sense to scroll across for everything game related while YouTube/hulu/Netflix are more convenient to access.

It's pretty dam barbones, but I think it's a huge upgrade over the ps3 XMB due to its speed, sharing capabilities and multitasking. I don't think they have managed it poorly, they just look really had compared to Microsoft and there monthly updates/preview program. They could sure learn a thing or two from Microsoft.

The playstation firmware team is as assways as ever.

Kind of surprising after everything else they improved with the PS4 but I guess you cant get everything out of SCEJ's clumsy clutches.

The UI is great in a lot of aspects but it should have more options, that's all. It's something that should be solved with FW updates easily and the only complain I really have is that those updates came slower than expected.

But the UI works very well

What is the definition of clunky?

Because I really don't feel like the ps4 ui fits that description.

It's fast and simple

Yea there some missing features, but clunky?

MS is a software company that knows how to make these things work together.

3 OS's on XB1 to work with.

Sony can't compete. :/

Can't say I care about the OS. The latest game I want to play is on page 1. Good enough for me.

I just want that suspend resume.

Yes. I just logged in to check and it's currently at the front of my list despite not having used it in forever. Resogun and Olliolli, the last apps I actually opened and ran, are behind it.

That's really random. Have never had that happen to me.

It's also surprising how they figured out suspend/resume on the Vita but still don't have it on PS4.

Yeah, especially since they're both based on FreeBSD. Maybe the Vita fork was easier to manage s/r?

It's also surprising how they figured out suspend/resume on the Vita but still don't have it on PS4.

Vita has hardware flash memory specifically to store the entirety of the ram.
XB1 also has 8GB of flash memory for this purpose.

PS4 doesn't, and would need a different, more complex solution.

If a game or app gets updated, this does seem to bump it to the front of the list. So likely, one of the many apps under TV were updated recently.

It's the fastest and most stable UI out there, there's no comparison. Simply for that reason I love it.
Once they add in some managing options like folders/deleting from library, it'll be perfect.
