Sony's management of the PS4 UI has been atrocious

Andrew goosen said this:

What you're referring to is akin to hibernation. You would not get a quick boot when copying 8GB of data. On a vita this may make more sense since you aim to preserve battery when in standby (the vita has a god-like standby time) and the amount of data is not as large but on a home console/computer it makes far more sense to keep the ram in a low power state.

Thanks for that. Didn't know it was being used like that.

Better than the vita by a billion times more. I hate feeling that I need to touch the screen just to do anything

You don't have to use touch controls at all on Vita if you don't want to. I'm pretty sure there are button/dpad alternatives to any action you want to take when using the UI.

I love the ps4 ui. Every time I boot it up I'm amazed at how fluid and crisp it is. Xbone ui pisses me off a lot. Wii u ui is ok. 360 and ps3 ui were both great.

Why is Sony so incapable of delivering on this front?

To me there is a difference between sony being incompetent and someone not liking to ui and how it is handled.
I agree with you on the missing folders and the ability to hide / delete icons. That really, really is mising. Other than that, the ui is perfect for me. I have to spend minimum time on it to start a game, it is fast and snappy. Install times are super fast and i can start a game, pause it, jump to the store and back in no time.

I really dislike the vita ui though. For me it is way more un-intuitive.

It's fast as hell, doesn't take me much time at all when switching apps/games. Miles above the Xbone's UI.

Message system is the only thing that's fucked and I'd like them to sort that out.

The UI is fine for me, could be better, but the lack of features for the supposed 'most powerful console EVAR!' is inexcusable and indefensible.

Sorry OP No issues here. The UI is snappy, and straight forward and the only thing I want is suspend/resume. If they add that I'm fine. Personally, it's my favorite UI this gen. (Owner of the Xb1 as well )

i'm still pretty sure Sony just doesn't want to include DLNA support as that is 99% used for piracy. They will try to push their movie download services as long as possible.

And that's not really an UI gripe. UI works fine, i would only like folders. The rest are additional features and services that have nothing to do with User Interface Design.

What is this always with saying that Music Unlimited/Video Unlimited icon don't disappear? If you use 15 items it will go to library and you will not have to see it again forever. You have 15 games to use our do you? This false info keeping pop up very often when I read a rant about the PS4 UI and it's simply not true.

And no I don't think the UI is a mess. Far away from it. It's simple yes but fast and very easy to use and you get what you want in seconds. Settings, Friends, Messages, Party etc. are separate in the upper corner. All your games are at the mainbar. The last 15 items you have used will show there. What is so difficult about that?

the OP talks about DLNA and suspend missing, but those are features, not UI. The UI is pretty much fine IMO, but yes they could do wih adding some more features.
- all system related stuff is separated in the top row
- all apps and games are in the middle, ordered by most recent used. With the new shorter list that isn't even annoying anymore
- bottom is for context around the current item - similar to the hub that xbox just introduced but far more visible and therefore useful.

There are a few things the UI could do to be improved
- better sorting in the library view
- maybe let me toggle to hide games/apps that aren't installed - so only show installed stuff.mthat will get more important later on
- folders like PS3. These could be done like the current TV/Video folder so you drill down into them, so it would still fit into the current UI style.

I agree it's missing some essential features but clunky? Nope. Of course it could be better, even without adding suspend resume and DLNA, but for me what is there works really well.

While you cannot hide icons don't the least used applications get shunted into the library and replaced by the more often used ones?

i want notifications when my friends come online =/
such a basic feature thats missing....

And the ability to have favourites - with the larger friends lists, being notified when everyone is online would be a nightmare.

I'd like the xbox to only notify me if I'm playing a game. With my live TV going through it, my wife gets kissed off at notifications popping up all the time, so I've turned it off.

I loved the XMB, I hate the current system.

The library is clunky to navigate, the OS is slow, the voice commands aren't great either.

Just let me have it like I have my PS3 set up, let me organise all my games in folders and display them under a "Games" header, I have my PS3 set up to show my digital games under genre and it's perfect, I feel like playing MGS? I find them all under Stealth, I fancy playing CoD AW? I just go to FPS.

I would really love to be able to display more than 9 icons on the screen at one time when I'm scanning through the library!

I'm curious, does the PS4 UI insert unremoveable ads into my library? If not, then it's already better than PS3 (though that only happened after years).

I don't think folders are the answer for the single row of games/apps. An arrangement system, with categories like "most recent" "most played" "digital/physical" "least/most trophies" "largest friends list" "favourites" etc, directly accessible on the current single row is better.

I like it, it's quick if maybe a bit basic. I've never had a problem doing something. And touch wood, it hasn't frozen once.

I don't mind the UI itself but the PSN Store is still shithouse, and yes, the promised features that still haven't shown up is just pure incompetence.

Yup, bought launch day.

If that was the case, wouldn't problems show elsewhere? I've had problems basically since the 2.0 update.

You should probably rebuild your database.
There was a thread about this.
Speeds the UI up a lot if you're having "clunky" problems

Wish PS4 had a "pin" feature similar to Xbox One. I love that.

It puts your 'last opened' on the bar of 15 items, similar to pinning.

UI gets me to the games fast, and settings are easy to get at. Don't really want more than that other than sorting; suspend/resume is something I use on Vita, but that's because I stick to one game at a time on handheld ((and PS4 isn't a slouch getting a game started from boot anyway).

Anyone saying the PS4 UI is 'great' must really not know what a great UI is like. It's perfectly functional and fairly fast, but seriously lacking. Everytime I go back to my Xbone it's almost night and day, and that UI still has a lot of work to be done on it (it's by no means great either). It just does a lot of nice things like the snapping of information e.g achievements, meaning I'm not taken out of the game. And the quick switching and snapping of apps in general e.g having Youtube playing whilst I'm navigating the store. Sony's general lack of updates for the PS4 is incredibly frustrating.

'The UI is absolutely great.
The one thing an UI has has has has to be is: fast.

And PS4 UI is super quick and responsive no matter what the system is doing in the background, so thats awesome.

The OS and UI for consoles have been getting progressively worse and worse.

The main problem being that the devs continually want to make everything graphical and pretty and they are also trying to fit in way too many features so it becomes impossible to find anything quickly.

My favourite UI was the very first 360 one with the blades, I thought that was speedy and functional.

Also the shop is an embarrassment. Slow and useless.

What does it add?

- You can let your friend play a game to maybe convince him to get it too (I did that with Evolve, for example)
- You can play couch-coops together, even if the other person does not have the game and is miles away
- You can share your screen with your party without having possibly everyone else on Live on Playstation watch
- You can let someone help you beat a certain part of a game you can't beat (Venom Hot Lap comes to mind)

The only thing I could clearly remember was the shared screen business and letting your friend play for you. Both of those sound completely useless to me, bit the couch co-op does sound interesting. The hour limitation seems a bit unnecessary, though.

I didn't mean that Sony was doing absolutely nothing, but after all this time, I'm not feeling like they're trying as hard as they could be.

Remote play seems great, despite me not having a vita to use it. Share play co-op sounds great, so long as it works as well as it needs to.

It's not hard to see that this generation is revolving highly around social experiences. While there's nothing wrong with that, so long as it's done well, it doesn't have much of an impact on me.

I was raised a single child, I play most of my games by myself, and I was born too early to understand the mentality behind sharing screenshots on social media. I would personally like to see Sony add some features that a single person can benefit from and enjoy.

Maybe that sounds crazy, but from where I stand, it does seem like they're not doing much of interest.

Excuse the typos, I'm on my phone.

UI is far superior compared to Xbone's clunky metro shit.

oh wow, not even reading the OP at this point

The UI is extremely lacking at the moment but i don't hate it too much, just le me organize my stuff ffs, also the fact that i still can't access the PSN Store once i started a game is extremely awful, being forced to restart the console every damn time is frustrating

Features on the other hand, still no suspend/resume feature, no DLNA and the fact that i still can't get notified for people who comes online is ridiculous

Why do people cry so much about suspend and resume?

It makes sense on a handheld console where you pick up and play to kill time then suspend it for when you want to pick up next time.

A console plugged into the wall makes no sense. Is it really THAT much of an inconvenience to sit there for for half a minute while your game loads back up?

Maybe I'm just crazy but I'd love to see the Vita "marbles" or bubbles system on the console. With all the digital stuff lately, that system felt really nice in organizing things.
Anyway, can the PS4 feed you pizza on command? No? Clearly it's an inferior console.

It's more the principle of it that people care about. Sony sold the PS4 off the back of promising Suspend/Resume and people expect them to come through, because if they don't, what else are they willing to lie about in order to sell something?

“Some features will not be available at release, such as the ‘suspend and resume mode’, which is a feature that keeps the PS4 system in a low power state and promptly takes users back to their game,” the company noted on the PlayStation Blog.
They didn't give a timeframe and they clearly said it won't be coming at launch.

There must be a technical reason why it hasn't arrived yet rather than them, seemingly, witholding it just to annoy people because they are number one or whatever silly conspiracy theory people have now.

sort of, there are icons for things that are basically previews for services sony wants you to use. you cant remove them either. the wall of recent activity, which is the first thing you see also has ads but it doesn't load half the time because psn is a joke.

the worst is the psn store. it feels like bad file share site that's a clusterfuck of ads and fake links.

My main issue with the PS4 is how the library is sorted. The line of recently used apps isn't that bad, but having everything piled into a generic library folder is headache inducing. There should be a seperate folder for installed games, and games ready for installation akin to the Xbone.

Also, adding a seperate row to the interface to keep applications and games seperate would be fantastic.

EDIT; that's what I love about the Wii U/3DS home screens. I can sort it anyway I want.
But that folder has an "all" "apps" & "games" sections?

I'm not sure how them not giving a timeframe defeats my point? It doesn't matter what the timeframe is, we're over one year in and they still haven't delivered.
