Is there any way to tell if the lag is your fault or the opponent's? I've been having lag trouble while playing this and Tekken and I checked my connection but it's fine. I don't get it...

It might be the case. I'm pretty ass at Tekken 6 too.

Any tips?

I use Devil Jin style.

Learn the game with a character that isnt based mostly on pure punishing? In all honesty if you want a fast fluid close up fighter, pick up natsu she pretty much does the same things jin does with a better mix up game, just with out the free ring outs for no effort.

play nightmare, use 4 moves and win :p

To bad it's not that simple.

Okay. What's the most noob friendly character then? i.e the guile/ken/balrog of the game.

My main issues seem to be getting my offense going I guess. People will get me into a block string once, and I fail to punish it or get out of it with side steps, throws, quick jabs, etc.

You forgot the caveat: Against scrubs.

I don't know much about about DJ, but sounds like you need to work on recognizing when to sidestep and crouch, when to punish. People shouldn't be getting you in too many frame traps since DJ's A attack is as fast as Natsu's. Does DJ have auto-GI moves? What do those GI?

Are you having trouble against specific characters?

Most moves are negative on block. If they're just pressing buttons, your fastest move will beat theirs, though do take into account whether they're left in a crouching state or not. Throws can do decent damage, but they are techable on reaction.

Does it matter what button you press to tech throws?

Also, I think I should try some other characters than a Patroklos. He's a little execution heavy especially with the slide inputs. I can do them now online but things like 214-3aB still messes me up, especially since it seems the 214 won't work unless you move the analog stick all the way to the left.

EDIT: Also Dampierre's Theme, so good.

A lot of new players seem to like Nightmare or Siegfried or Xiba for their range. SCIV online was basically Kilik City. (That game's staff user.)

Yes. You have to match the button with what your opponent entered. ie. A to escape A+G based throws.

I don't understand this game at all. =(

The only knowledgeable player I know was speaking pretty highly of Nightmare despite everything he does being negative.

The last few days, I have been so addicted to this game... I am really glad that it was NOT rushed. It might need a few patches here and there, but overall, the game has an AMAZING concept, a godlike presentation and a very, very varied cast, regardless of the number of fighters present.

What is really amazing is that now, with the Supers, the GI costing meter and the EX attacks (it will be a long time before I get used to their SC names, anyway...), the meter management part is so complex that I cant even wrap my head around it. I mean.. out of 5 rounds, you and your opponent both won 1 and 1 games, and now your health is flashing RED. Your guard is about to break. What do you do? You have 1 meter, but it does not matter. What matters is that should you throw out this game? Bait attacks and make sure that you lose that red stuff - or try to win barely and start the next round with yellow or red?

There is so much mind game going on with the guard "meter" being depletable that it is not even funny :D I am maining Xiba right now, but I consider him as a stepping stone for Hilde and Leixia anyway. In the meantime, EVERY character that I tried was fun. Every single one.

Holy shit at Aeon. Really. His attacks carry so much momentum that it is really good to be able to rush shit down with him - and all the more painful when you lose it :D

Also, the super animations, with the camera work, and some of the best levels seen in close up and personal, really bring the BEST looking game in this generation to the table. No matter how open ended games might be technically more impressive, THIS is the best fighting cinematics that this generation can offer. Only prerendered can fight with this.

Nightmare is good. I was referring to the simplistic strategy the person I quoted posted.

The main characters giving me trouble are anyone with long range i.e Nightmare, Sieg, Astaroth, etc.

Are you utilizing his wavedash? That should help you close the distance and it also tech crouches. I don't play DJ, so this is theory fighter total. Haven't fought many nightmare's but, most of the moves Sieg will be doing to you to keep you out are either B attacks, which you can sidestep, or A attacks which will be a lot of highs.

It sounds like you need to utilize your movement and DJ's i10 a attack.

Wanna hear a good joke? Waste your time helping me! LOL!
Bought this for the 360 today and I'm not exactly sure why. I have a terrible past with fighting games and a bad habit of not playing them because they're so hard to get into.

The good news is I bought it at Target with a friend and it only cost us $40 (we swapped gift cards they give out when you buy it new).

I like how the supers all have specific uses and range, rather than just being "do one hit and then watch an auto combo". Mitsurugi's is great for tacking on some extra damage to a juggle, while Siegfried's needs to be timed just before someone lands. While Viola's might catch someone who's not paying attention, from what I've seen so far it's mostly giving you a free throw. It's also fun to go up against a Cervantes (a scrub magnet currently) and just duck all his supers. Me, I've tried to time the shot on a juggled opponent but it does very little damage even if you hit, so maybe it's mostly for catching noobs.

All in all, it makes all the characters a bit different to approach, which is certainly not common in a 3D fighter.

Natsu >>>>>>>>>>>Taki

She is awesome. Where are my Natsubros at?

I'll admit I was wrong about Natsu. She lost some strings, but her stance getting back the lows (and other stuff that SC4 Taki lost), more than makes for it. Doesn't hurt that her CE (with the follow up) does amazing damage and her 8 way attacks are cancelable.

Is anyone having trouble with online right now? I've been disconnect 5 times in a row from the network right at the beginning of every match.

This is my first time going online with this game, but I've never had any trouble with other games.

Edit: It just happened again. As soon as the match starts, the connection is lost. I haven't been able to get one match in yet. >_<

I've been using Natsu and...I'm done. It's too easy. Too many things are setting up my downfall. First, she's too strong. Which means if people are serious about playing the game, they'll have some anti natsu tech to work on me. Second, I'm finding myself falling back on her strength. Natsu (not me) is just rolling over fools. Time for a break. Gotta learn someone new.

I've always been more of a casual SC fan, so a lot of stuff goes over my head, but she definitely feels a lot more capable than SC4 Taki. And I don't exactly think SC4 Taki was a slouch either.

And on the subject of her CE follow up: the thing makes me feel like such a badass pulling it off (even though it isn't particularly hard at all).
I've been on that train since before it left the station. :)

(Although I still like Taki's character design better. Natsu is more fun to play than Taki ever was.)
The original Natsubro. I totally agree with the statements in in the parenthesis. And more than just being more fun to play all her stuff just looks cooler. All her stuff is just so flashy and awesome now.

I may just end up buying the SC Quran to learn about all the specific Natsu stuff I'm missing out on.

"All of that is in DOA4 to some extent. Just heavily mix up based though, like DOA4."

Almost every fighting game is about mixups in some form. How is DOA4 any more "mixup based" than Tekken or Virtua Fighter?

Sidesteps don't work in DoA4. the only punishing you can doa4 is with throws. Guard crushes actually work in this game.

DoA is one of my favorite games. I don't get how these two are at all comparable, since what makes DoA4 "Mixup" based is the fact that you can't punish anything, the defender is always at the advantage, and how strong counters are. None of these things are in SC4.

You dont like the free safe moves, the fast launcher with a 1/3rd life follow up for no meter and other neat things?

And sc is more about vert/horizontal mix ups than just straight up high low.

Too much shit to watch on streams tonight. Live Retro Rumble, Norcal Install, Super Arcade SC5 tournament. I'm going to have to use that site that puts multiple streams in one window.

DOA4 is heavily relaint on its paper/rock/scissors triangle system. Attacks beat throws, holds beat attacks, and throws beat holds. It's the main core of the game, SCV is closer to that. Not saying it's exactly alike.

That triangle system or any kind of analog to it doesn't actually exist in SC5, though.

No, it's very much like it. Side steps do work against certain attacks, whiff punishes are prevalent in DOA4 too, etc. . . the high low mix up in SCV is a huge part of the combat, moreso than ever thanks to it being faster and more offensive based.

so how has the fighting/SC community received this game so far? comments on this page seem to be positive, i'm curious about jumping in.

No it doesn't, but the high/low mix ups are a huge part of gaining damage in SCV and it's also mostly guess based. Which is what grapfruitman's issue might be with SCV. Since I know he's an avid DOA player.

Never said otherwise. I'm just saying that mixups play a bigger role.

I have been seeing her at the top of a lot of people's personal tier lists right now. She definitely feels strong me, but I still don't know enough about the other characters yet to agree or disagree with you. I've only had a day with my brothers copy of the game.

I can respect learning a less-popular secondary for the match-up inexperience advantage. And to just get rid of any bad habits that comes from playing a character with great tools.
Right here!!! She's a lot better than I thought she would turn out. Oki game is way to scary and damaging.
Mind getting into specifics about what of her wake-up game is scary? I've only had a day to mess with her.

What's the quickest way to unlock all the character creation items?

If you have controller/arcade stick with Turbo button:

Assign B (attack) to X or A button (depending on console). Go to Quick Battle, pick Pyrrha Omega, find BloodFrosty, set X/A to turbo and walk away for a few hours.

I've had this running for a bit and I'm at 65-0. :D

Most people seem to like it, from what I gather. There tends to be two camps though: the guys who are upset because the game lacks offline modes or their favorite fighters, and the guys who are enjoying what they have been given.
