South Korea halts THAAD anti-missile system rollout

South Korea is suspending the deployment of a controversial missile defence system while the government examines its environmental impact. The rollout of the US-funded Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense system (Thaad) may be on hold for a year. Four recently arrived launchers will not be deployed, an official said. Two already installed will stay in place.
Thaad aims to protect South Korea from the North's missiles, and has been criticised at home and by China. The office of recently-elected president Moon Jae-in said that a comprehensive environmental study of Thaad was needed and that it could take up to a year to complete. During that time, Thaad's deployment would be frozen as it was not "urgent enough" to bypass the assessment, it said.
Thaad began its rollout earlier this year under South Korea's previous presidential administration, a move which Mr Moon has said was "regrettable".
The suspension comes days after Mr Moon's office accused the defence ministry of withholding information about Thaad from the president. It said the military did not tell Mr Moon about the delivery of the four other Thaad launchers.
The ministry has defended this decision, saying it had to uphold a confidentiality agreement with the US.

South Koreans have been living under the barrel or multiple barrels, thousands of barrels of artillery since the cold war.

You could feasibly get an extemely high death doll of that of a nuke with that much arty barraging down on a packed city.

Can you imagine if the US was South Korea they would of had multiple heart attacks.

From my understanding, some of the people on the border were not happy with the disruption that this THAAD system is bringing to their homes, communities and environments. Not sure if that was a majority but it sounded like a lot of people were against it.

The confidentiality agreement the defence ministry agreed with the US prohibits them from telling their own President? Seems strange.

The degree to which the US controls the South Korean Military is really staggering. There are substantial military assets on South Korea, and the US has missed deadlines on demilitarizing. In the event of war, American officers will take control of South Korean troops.

Historically, the biggest cause of the Korean left has been alleviating US influence. Even a moderate liberal like Moon is interested in pursuing an independently South Korean future that's not 100% beholden to US policy.

"uphold a confidentiality agreement" - Why holding elections when the president has no control over it's own military?

Well, South Korea was a dictatorship until 1987, and been pretty authoritarian until even more recently.

It's a weird situation for sure. People in Seoul have effectively lived with a gun pointed at them their entire lives.

I guess they just got used to it because they don't seem all that bothered every time NK does some saber rattling thing.

THAAD seems highly unpopular in SK; just another way for USA to swing their dicks around on the peninsula and infantilize the Korean people

I'm sure North Korea will launch another missile soon that will to get the ball rolling again. They seem to have a knack for doing the wrong thing at the wrong time.
