South of Midnight |OT| Don't stop me-weavin'

Played some chapter 1. Nice, vibrant visuals and the performance is real smooth. The game, so far, plays like a bog standard 3D platformer, nothing out of the ordinary. But it's already much better feel to the game than Compulsion's previous stuff.

Gave it a shot for an hour.

Creativity level is pretty high. Feels like am playing a fairy tale.

Combat in first encounter felt retarded. There was no flow to attacks and dodging. Unlocked my first upgrade right after that. That should make it much better. Now I can dodge and take a hit immediately after that. Much better.

Game is pretty meticulous with world building. Every lore entry, character, world concepts are nicely labeled and explained very well.

Game didn't waste too much of my time, at beginning, it sets up everything in some 15-20 mins, am good to go after that.

Overall, would be silly to miss out on this since I have gamepass.

From what I remember, the gameplay doesn't get going until Chapter 3.

Yeah, I'm in. Just done chapter 2, and I'm very much liking the atmosphere so far. This could be my palate cleanser between the non stop open world nonsense we get fed these days.

Go go gadget GamePass!

Yeah under settings and gameplay you can toggle it on/off, you can skip encounters/Boss and chase sequences. Honestly, you are not missing out, because the fights suck, even for a short game like this one.

Okay thank you. I hadn't heard much about this game at all but seeing a couple short clips piqued my interest. Piqued no more.

Cap 5

+One of the most artistically beautiful games released recently. Practically paintin. All helped, I repeat, by brilliant IQ , great HDR and great performance.
+I agree; the slow motion effect is barely noticeable.
+Phenomenal sound and soundtrack, too.

-+Very simple gameplay and chapter development. I think Compulsion could have done more here, and they would have had a more well-rounded final game.

Impressed with the soundtrack chasing the house. Pretty banging
The composer is a genius imo. He made Plague Tale series, Streets of Rage 4, Vampyr, Greedfall, Dying Light 2 etc...

I am playing the game mainly because of him: he is able to completely transcend games with the way he composes and uses the music to serve a game.

Chapter 12 is easily the best from a visual and style standpoint imho.

Finished the game earlier this morning. Not a fan of the penultimate chapter. Just repeats the same gameplay loop too many times.

I'm at 11.5 hours at finish. Have some collectibles and combat stuff to clean up. Luckily you can replay chapters and the collectibles carry over.

I'm in chapter 3. Really enjoying it so far. The setting, visuals and audio are all top notch. I've gotten a few upgrades and find the combat and traversal fun.

The soundtrack is excellent so far, hot damn. Love all the characters I've met, Beaux, Mrs. Pearl, and Hazel's mamma. Visually stunning game too.

Yep, the game could possibly be on the list of games highlighted in graphics of the year or at least in honorable mentions.
In that regard, Compulsion has clearly benefited from MS's support (The Coalition seems to have helped) and has taken a leap forward compared to its previous works.
Sound is top notch also.

Sad that it didn't round out the game with a more elaborate combat system and boss encounters, because it would have rounded out an already good product.

Game starts of real strong, but chapter 2 was a bit of an overlong, kinda boring tutorial. It picks up real nice halfway through chapter 3 though; looks and runs real good too.
I think there's something super cool here and I'll definitely finish it.

Looking at the achievements list, it seems like 12 chapters. I've finished 3 in a single 2 and a half hour sitting. Looks like this'll be a 12~ hour game at this rate. I need one of these after playing multiple 40+ hour games since January.

Game looks and plays well. RTX 4070 has everything on Ultra with DLSS quality. HDR and 60FPS.
I'm only at chapter 2 meeting 'Bunny'. Music is interactive with where I am in the game. I was stalling looking around and the music went along with it.
Have not gotten to any combat yet, but I might set the game to skip combat later on.
I'm liking it so far.

I installed it off Game Pass and played it for about 10 minutes...uh no, not for me. Had much better impression of Eternal Strands, the dialog and the vibe was so off putting in this to start that I couldn't do it.

Last day of Game Pass for me so I plowed through the first 8 levels. It does really feel like a throwback to games in the PS2 and 360 era. I get a lot of Psychonaut/Alice Madness Returns vibes and then you have borrowed mechanics like Uncharted's ledge climbing and Prince of Persia's wall running amongst others. It's a really linear experience with every side path shortly leading to an upgrade currency for the combat skill tree (I unlocked 14/21 to this point). The combat is serviceable but lacks any teeth and the frequency leads to tedium. The two boss battles were pretty ho-hum as well. Playing on XSX, it's nice visually but it has a ton of foliage pop-in and the stop motion style cutscenes are pretty jarring compared to the game play. There are some flaws in the animation system and a bunch of clipping when climbing. I also got stuck in the geometry once. I'm not really a fan of the narrator as the voice actor seems to slip in and out of his southern accent frequently. The music is kind of hit or miss too and I can't say I'm a fan of the high school musical numbers leading up to the bosses. I wouldn't call it great, but it's a lot better than I was expecting.

At just about the ten hour mark.
I feel like it's coming to a close soon. Really liked it.
Minor gripes include the fact that upgrades are tied to easily missable collectibles and the combat can get annoying. Gonna be a lil sad when I finish. Ready for Doom next, but honestly this shit pulled me away from the ending of Avowed so I should probably knock that one out first too.

Sounds pretty good tbh. I'm going to give it a go on my lunch break today.

Ive been dying for traditional games to make a return. I am almost at my limit for open world busy work. I can deal with one like every few years and Im currently playing ass creed and final fantasy rebirth....Holy shit ive fallen off that game hard.

Anyay, good input. sold me on giving it a go at least. Shame about the combat

Just started chapter 10. I would say this game is 5/10.

-Gameplay is extremely generic without any originality (turned off combat and chase scenes around chapter 7)
-Story is OK, although I have no interest in the "South" folklore etc.
-Music is good, but the songs are not
-Some nice graphics and scenery, but the character art style sucks
-Stop motion effect doesn't work. Pre-rendered intro was cool, but in-game it just looks bad
-Not a fan of the main character

Overall this reminds me of 'The Gunk' although it had a bit more originality in its gameplay, both games are extremely average and story oriented. However the story is not that interesting so there isn't really much for me to enjoy.

Best game I played in ages

Its starts off slow but then ramps it right up and the music and gameplay sucks you. It's so much better than DMC 5 for me, just wish the combat was as smooth as that in DMC 5

The music in this game will hopefully win some awards it's utterly incredible

This is a really weak platformer. Floaty jumping, and a narrow path that you can actually traverse. Every object that isn't climbable has a force field around it so you slide off, whereas the things you're meant to climb are marked with the white paint of shit game design.

The magic power to make objects solid has a slight delay, so if you happen to be inside the object when it solidifies you get thrown out and the ability fails. The camera forcing you to look in certain directions feels kind of broken, like it's not obvious why it's limiting the ability to move it with the right stick.

I think I'm on chapter 3 or 4, but that's enough for me. Turned the combat off after the second fight, so at least the designers acknowledged how poor it was and gave you the option to skip it entirely.

The artstyle is really good. I do think there are a few overlaps with some Gears 4 styling (maybe Coalitions input) It's a real step up for Compulsion games as well.

I'm only up to chapter 3, and the first few areas have been really fancy corridors, sort of like Crash with some basic controls.

Combat has been nothing spectacular but it's serviceable. All in all so far, this is clearly a step up raising up the profile from Compulsion and hopefully the next step on their journey maturing the studio and its output.

I like most of this so far. It's a big improvement over We Happy Few which was honestly dog shit so props to the studio. Hazel is actually a likeable character. The writing isn't offensive or annoying and the voice work is pretty good, so it's already a better game than Assassin's Creed Shadows. (Fuck off Japanese dub weebs)

I'm on the hardest difficult so the combat isn't that much of an issue for me atm. It's challenging enough to keep me engaged for now.

Oh yeah, obligatory fuck SBI for you snowflakes.

I forgot it was coming out
I normally see plenty of ads for Gamepass first party games as they come out

Haven't seen a peep for South of Midnight, and it looks pretty good
Now that i think about it, i recall seeing an ad for Indiana Jones still this passed week

I love neogaf!

I wish they ditched the clay animation approach, I value originality but it makes the characters look awkward in the cutscenes, especially the catfish.

But the game is stunning at times, and the soundtrack is great. The southern style of the game looks great.

The combat reminds me of the first Hellblade or something like that, it needs work but I dont mind it.

It's better than I expected, I'm having a great time with it. And it's so nice to play a more focused linear game.

This is a $40 game. I doubt they're marketing it as hard as Indiana Jones.

Gave this a quick try (still deep in Avowed when I have time) - it's pretty good. I'll actually play this, so it's not another Hellblade. Looks fantastic. Probably squeeze it in-between finishing Avowed and starting AC Shadows.

Playing through Chapter 5 now.

The music is fantastic. Glad I'm on a decent pair of headphones for this one, and not the display's speaker.
