South of Midnight - Reviews Thread

In some ways I think they're the perfect fit for GP. They make smaller scale games that don't cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Thematically and visually their games are pretty distinct so it helps add diversity to the game catalog.
The issue is that these smaller scale games are taking them almost 7 years to make.

Since when is a 7/10 or 8/10 is a shit game......'gamepass game'.......'pass' ......'I'll wait for $5'
WTF?
Currently 76 Metacritic

On par with Rise of the Ronin, Black Myth Wukong, Star Wars Outlaws, Eternal Strands, Atomfall....... and these are good games

Considering the Xbox fan site padding. It should be in the low 80s to be on par with those games.

It took them 8 (ok, 6 if we count 1.0 for We Happy Few) years to release a 12 hour AA with quiestionable choices and Yellow Seal of Quality. Dunno, man.

And that's exactly why GP is a good fit for them. The studio would not have survived on its own making the kinds of games they make. By getting in bed with MS, they can continue to make the weird shit they like to make and not have to worry about selling enough copies to pay the bills.

Inbefore 4m players official announcement :D
On more serious note- gl to every1 who plays it "4 free" on gamepass, and even more good luck to ppl who fork up 70$ of their hard earned money :)
Im sure we will find some GAF-bros who gonna do it, we had few concord players here after all :P

It's only $39.99.

Yeah you kinda right. But studio is running for 7 years and it's not running on fumes in Montreal, that's for sure.

I'll chalk some of that up as part of the transition of being acquired which I'm sure involved some staff turnover and changes to governance structure. I wouldn't anticipate their next game to take 7 years.

Unless MS is still unhappy with the results.

There's a tribe in Africa who eats cookies made out of sand.

Just because you like something doesn't make it great.
On that same note, just because you dislike something doesn't make it garbage. 🤷‍♂️

It's all subjective. But I doubt you cared about the game in the first place, lmao.

Tango surely thought the same

...a story that leans too heavily on exposition.

It was only one review, but I grow more and more weary of this with each passing year. The gaming industry has too many writers, imo.

Looks great and plays average by the look of it. Hm. I had higher expectations when Microsoft acquired Compulsion in 2018. Contrast and We Happy Few were interesting games with lackluster gameplay so I thought with Microsoft's money the studio would finally be able to make the game they had always wanted to make. I hope this wasn't it.

It's a tragedy what they did to this game. They really had something cool with the Southern mythical folklore vibe and had the right artstyle… then they throw it all away by making the protagonist a jive talking cringelord with nasty piercings everywhere.
Jive talking? Holy shit what year is it?

Compulsion has been mid-tier as long as they've existed so 60s-70s is about what I expected. Seems like a game made for a subscription which is what it seems Xbox has been aiming for. I might give it a try on PC, setting seems cool.

I paid it. I don't care about Gamepass. It's $39.99 regular/ $49.99 deluxe

It's a new IP and looks pretty good. If I get 12 hours out of it then that is worth it.

Better than an $80 resell of Zelda BOTW on Switch 2 or $80 for another Mario Kart

Looking through the reviews, the gameplay seems average while story, characters are the highlights. Being from the American south myself, I'm more intrigued about the game now as reviews are talking a good bit about that aspect of the game.

adamsapple adamsapple you aren't playing this turd are you?

Why is it a "turd"? It is getting good scores

The scary part is that this "mid-price" title took at least 5 years to make.

Let that sink in.

Because its the unpleasant reality that 5 years to make a game like this pretty much guarantees it won't be profitable.

Input latency is awful on the Series X version. Might have to put it down until it's fixed.

Edit: Set Xbox to 60hz and seems to have improved. Try that for now if y'all have issues.

One 7 is not another 7.

You might consider that the games are scored based on these two elements:
- 5 points for technical aspects (bugs, framerate, resolution, graphics)
- 5 points for the game itself (story, gameplay)

So a broken mess but with a good story might get the same score as a technical marvel but super boring game.

Can't watch while at work, but here is Karak Karak 's review...

Just finished watching his review.
Positive enough for me to give it a try. I'm a little concerned about the animation possibly giving me the motion sickness vibes, but he also said a day one patch is on it's way for release.
Hopeful any animation hitches will be fixed by release.
