...speaking of Psychonauts

It's been quite a while since we've heard anything about this game. Despite what oxy says, I'm confident that Tim can still put out a quality product. I also believe that the PS2 version will get canned (ala Stranger and Tork). Doublefine is just too damn small to waste resources on bringing the PS2 version up to speed.

It looks like Majesco put together an official site. http://www.psychonauts.com It's pretty cool (especially the voice saying "psychonauts"), except I'm bothered by the fact that Tim Schafer's name is all over the game. I'm getting a creepy Alice McGee vibe from it all.

Here are some screens. Don't know how new they are since I haven't been keeping up on the game, but I haven't seen them before... and what good is a thread without screenshots?

Has oxy played it? What are his complaints?

yah he played it back when MS was publishing the game. He basically said that the game was all atmosphere and no substance. Basically, it just wasn't fun....

Maybe Doublefine took a good hard look at their work after they got canned and made the appropriate adjustments.

Which is where http://www.budcat.com/ comes in.

For my money, Schafer deserves to be American McGee more than American McGee deserves to be American McGee. In so many words.

I'm more bothered by the fact that I can't find a place to change my password.

I haven't played it, but a couple people in my group who previously worked on it echoed Oxy's sentiment. Very beautiful, but not much game behind it.

I still find it amusing that IGN tried to hype up the PS2 port of this game and completely missed the RE4 PS2 port :lol :lol

How long ago was that? One year? Two years? More? I hope Double Fine used the time and made a game out of that...

Based on what did they get that price at E3 2002?

The semi-recent gameplay videos looked pretty fun..

judging by MS dropping stranger, and how terrific that looks and seems to be, hopefully psychonauts wasnt dropped because it sucked, just cause it wont sell ;)

and yeah, its been quite some time since oxy's report on it...

Everyone I've talked to who played Tork absolutely loved it, and were amazed that we dropped it while keeping Blinx, Voodoo Vince, etc. I would pick that as the one dropped because it won't sell.

I played it about a month or so ago in a focus group. I signed a NDA so I'm wary on saying much, but I really liked what I played of it. From everything I saw there, I'm looking forward to it.

One interesting thing I noticed from looking at the design sketches (amazing, reminded me of some of the Neverhood/Earthworm Jim stuff I've seen from Doug Tennapel) is that in the sketches, there's this Waterloo level (no idea if it's in the game) and the main character was called D'Artagnan. (or maybe it's another character in the game?)

Everything I've seen though has him called Raz (short for Rasputin from what I can tell). If he was changed from before, it makes it more interesting as to what changes the game has taken (and considering it all has to do with the minds of creatures... maybe a better idea for the character's name/inspiration). Just IMO.

(Hopefully there's nothing above that could get me in trouble.)

When I worked at Cinemaware on Robin Hood, we just did the PS2 version and they outsourced ports to xbox/pc to other companies and just focused on the PS2 one themselves. Maybe that's what'll happen with the PS2 version of Psychonauts.
