Hell is Us |OT| The world speaks. Listen closely.

Thankfully Gamefly shipped today even tho there was never an option to 'lock' this, looking forward to playing after liking the demo.

I really wish they had progress carry over from the demo tho, I'll have to play the entire prologue act again .. sigh.

I read that there are about 5 enemy types...

I'm sorry but I can't pull the trigger on that.

A 30 hour game having that few enemy types is damn near unforgivable for me.

Maybe I'll wait for a sale because everything else looks top notch.

Aaaand... Platinum'd it! 🤩

Definitely in my Top 5 this year!

From "Ugh, this Demo is boring!" to "Hm, let's give it another try" to "Okay, it's pretty great, I think I have to buy it" to "OMG, give me that early access for 20 bucks more I NEED it now!!!" this was an absolute sleeper hit for me.
How long for the plat ? Yes I agree the game is truly amazing, sense of discovery is unmatched

Game just becomes better and better

Difficult monsters are starting to appear

Atmosphere is being topped each chapter

Puzzles are getting much harder

Wow

Amazon Japan listed as "out of stock" as of release day and my pre-order is still pending shipment, thought I'd be jumping in over the weekend, guess not, looking forward to it though!

The combat in this game is not the focus. Once you play a few hours, you'll realize that the focus of the game is exploration and puzzle solving

Played the demo part and reached the new zone.

Do yourself a favour and put the difficulty slide to the max, the heal pulse mechanic is way to strong and even with the sliders on max, enemies do like 1\3 damage of your average souls trash mob.

Don't play on anything below hard with sliders maxed out, too bad the game feel still super easy for now because the combat is very competent and responsive.

Other than that, the game is high level.

Music really remind me of returnal a lot.

The npcs animations when they speak are very well done for a budget game.

Run pretty great on pc for now.

i'm liking it, the exploration is fantastic. I'm thinking about drawing my own map of the places i'm visiting.
Also i have a 3090 and it runs like butter in 4k.

I'm taking notes on my phone to remember all the place where i have to return.

It's gonne be fun to return in the very first zone and remember where to go with high level descriptions like "door on top, need 2 yellow things" :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

Game is becoming much harder on hard once you reached rank 2 ennemies (which you start to get once you reach the lake). I am getting pounded in the later maps.

Good to hear, althought i heard that you get very powerful very fast so the progression is not well balanced, hopefully they were wrong.

I get that, that's why im still interested. But not at full price.

Combat is my number one concern in any game.

Yeah I have not found the way to break the game yet, actually combat is starting to get very hard. I should try to dive deeper into the upgrades

Combat is mechanically sound but if zero challenge and only 5 type of enemies with no bosses is true, that's definitely a flaw hard to ignore, i hope i don't get soured by this the more i play because usually those are 2 big cardinal sins for me.

I bought Silksong after years of eagerly waiting to play it. I also bought Hell is Us.

Guess what? I only want to play Hell is Us. This game is absolutely mesmerizing and I just can't let it go. Phenomenal writing, production values, game design and atmosphere. I am in absolute awe!

Not sure demo progress transfers to the main game though, you might wanna check on that
It does not: at least it did not give me the option to when I started the game.

This is not a Souls game or anything like that: there is combat yes but this is absolutely not the focus on the game, dont worry. Also if you max all the difficulty slider there is definitely some challenge imo (I finish all my games in hardest difficulty and I never had trouble with Souls like game for reference)

I did not like the combat much at first but I started to unlock perks and other tools and now I really enjoy it.

But really, combat feels like a secondary part of the game : think about Zelda, not FS or even Action-oriented RPGs.

I'm already playing the game with all the difficulty sliders up dude, i was not really asking :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

I don't care if combat is not the focus, you still fight a lot so it is still a large part of your game and there are lot of combat focused systems between weapons progression, npcs rewards, light rpg mechanics, passive and active buffs etc.

If you put combat in your game, at least make it decent in all of its parts, 5 enemies and no challenge is not the way, the game is not a 8-10 hours romp, it's probably close to 30 hours if you do everything and only 5 enemies for 30 hours is pathetic if true, no other way around it.

I'm not one of those guys that ignore flaws just because he likes the game, that would not be intellectually honest.

If the enemy types were better designed, the lack of variety might not have been an issue. In the demo, it felt like I was fighting an army of white mannequins, like I was constantly in training mode. Still, after reading the comments here, it's back on my radar, and I'll try it once it goes... 75% off! :messenger_smiling_horns:

Yeah, now that I'm playing the game a bit more the combat is getting boring. It's not hard, because of the healing mechanic, but it's just something that's in the way of everything else in the game and there is not enough variety in enemies at all. It would fit the whole setting to have some human enemies as well, for example. I'm considering turning the combat difficulty down to just get it over with faster, so I can get thorugh it. Everything else is top notch though. I realise that my critcism of the combat makes it sound like a bad game, but it's really, really great. World building, music, art, voice acting, puzzles, atmosphere,... it's all top notch. Some of the best in a very long time.

Considering I have Silksong, Cronos and soon Silent Hill waiting and I still choose to finish game, says a lot.

Uh, I can't recall a time where i got issues with steam overlay. Will keep in mind.
It's one of the default things to try when you troubleshoot for problems in games, like the administrator thing, the fullscreen thing and the w8 compatibility thing.

I just erase the problem before it can even be a thing.

I take it you're not a Chess fan then?

Some thoughts of mine, only played until Jova and some related content in the village, like 5 hours in or so

World is interesting, combat is okay, but enemy variety is disappointing so far and they play pretty similarly too. It's mostly button mashing so far and I'm on middle difficulty. One or two tight spots in a few hours of gameplay. The protagonist is lacking for sure, I like his design, it's somewhat refreshing, but while the world and lore seem promising, it fails to have an emotional hook for the main character. I've seen two more involved cut scenes, the opening scene which was interesting enough, and the 'entity intro' cut scene in the ruins where a woman fights the demon entity and dies while killing it. The latter had some cool choreo was but wasn't animated that well, I could overlook this but the main character literally has 0 reaction to all of it.
Before that, he thinks the demon entity in the distance is a human, asks if it's okay, then shoots it when realizing his mistake, it doesn't get hurt, he says "what the fuck" or similar, gets knocked down. Cut scene fight happens. Not a word uttered about it. Just takes her gear and moves on. Common issue with blank slate characters in games. You can make a personable character without being a blank slate. In the opening scene he was also shown to have a character/personality.

Maybe in the future when he finds his family, which is the stated purpose of his adventure, there will be more personal investment in the story but that's something games need to do from the get go to really hook you. So far I want to know more about the world, but don't particularly care for the protagonist. It's also so far quite clear that the two factions at war are two sides of the same coin, and I'm not sure that's particularly interesting, but it depends on how the story and the supernatural parts pan out.

Exploration wise, there have been a few off-the-track locations I have discovered that are somewhat intruiging, but it's not like the game is hard to navigate so far. There has been one open zone yet, the wetlands/the marsh, but since it's mostly a flat field the points of interests are easy to spot and navigate to. I like that it's not handholding you, but it's not like it particularly poses a challenge so far either.

Graphics are okay, technical quality is good, art style of environments a bit generic.
So far it's a decent game for me, worth checking out but not revolutionary.

JFYI for the people saying it's way too easy

Some enemies do stunlock-and-one-shot you on the hardest difficulty (sliders to the max). Takes a while for it to happen though.

I was happy for a couple of hours because the enemies in the second zone were finally kicking my ass sometimes, but then i found better weapons, upgraded the polearm, found a ranged explosive spear skill that i can kinda spam and we are back to kinda easy wins :messenger_pensive:

Hopefully the enemies get another upgrade.

The first big map is massive, how many zones there are total?

The rest of the game is great tho, very dark, much darker than your average "dark" game.

You know I have to say I felt the same but I'm only a few hours in. It's not as bad as I thought it was going to be regarding the enemy types. The 5 or so that are in the game makes my brain think they're always doing something new when I encounter them.

Weird, but each fight feels different despite the low variety of enemies.

Playing on Pro i noticed some weird camera stuttering or frame pacing issues - tv says that framerate is 60fps so it's not that.

What is weird is that the demo was smooth...

I understand if some of you don't want to play this game because of enemy variety etc, but please do not avoid it because the demo was easy.

I just recorded this dude almost one-shotting me and I'm fully endurance gear'd pretty much lol

Not saying it's hard, but I'm saying you can't ONLY spam attacks.

Another case of "eNeMiEs DoN't HiT hArD, I pLaYeD tHe DeMo"

Finished it and damn near 100% on my first try. Took my sweet ass time, around 50h.

+ Health regen mechanic from Bloodborne and stamina regen mechanic from Ni-Oh, although not new, works perfectly in the game
+ Performance and graphics are great and best of all; extremely clean (PS5 Pro)
+ Combat feels and plays impactful. Every hit with your weapon really does feel like it's striking and slicing the enemy, while getting hit feels similarly
+Every time you discover new info that's related to old stuff, they add that new piece of information with white text (instead of the regular green), so you know exactly what to look after. It's QOL that saves so much time
+ Zones are neither too big or too small
+ I'm an advocate for "no maps, no markers", but usually when there's an option to toggle them off, the game's usually not designed after it. Hell is Us is truly designed around the whole idea of you being lost in the world
+ Equipment and gear choices feel impactful
+ Cyberpunk / Synthwave / Dark Synth OST unbelievably good
+ The SFX all-around is 10/10. And I'm not exclusively talking about the sound of rain or the ambience in caves... no, the SFX when hitting enemies and QTE them is orgasmic
+ Full transparency what everything does in terms of damage, defense etc from skills, weapons, upgrades etc
+ As soon as a certain companion NPC was introduced, I thought to myself "here we go, we'll have dialogue between these two non-stop. So much for echo-silence". Alas, I was so wrong.
+ Bosses are so fun and different, but there's only a few of them!

- Difficulty is on the easier side 80% of the game, ramps up drastically near the end though (hardest difficulty, max sliders)
- Main character design
- I really, really don't like the characters in this game. They're all stiff, very ugly and overall not interesting
- The gameplay loop, although fantastic, became exhausting after around 35 hours. The positive thing is that the game isn't bloating itself with huge worlds so it doesn't drag out too much
- Enemy variety is lacking

7/10

I really, really hope this game becomes a success and that we can enjoy even more from this team

7/10 appears a bit harsh given the positive but still that's ok.

Agree with you, the game has fantastic elements but feels more like a first draft in some parts (which it is and that is totally fine) which could however lead to an awesome follow up if the team finds success and can continue digging into what they are doing here.

This game gave you too many methods for healing, way too many, and i'm even ignoring the consumables completely.

If it was just the pulse it could have been much better.

Enemies definitely feel more than 5 in numbers because they mix and match all the types, still feel kinda samey after a while but it doesn't fell like you only have 5 if it make sense, now i discovered enemies that have 2 lymbic entities so you fight 3 enemies at once even if they are alone.

Other than that, still an high level game when it comes to exploration and puzzles, and run like butter.

It's because media and especially forums poisoned our minds, 7\10 is a good game.

Most 8-9 games are really 7\10 when you can list all the flaws analitically without biases.

Any game shouldn't have missable quest... is plain bad design that you make some die because you wait too long when the game happen in the span of a day...

My 7 is like industry standard 9 btw

My GOTYs usually get 8s, very rarely do they get 9

Thank you. This is exactly it.

My scoring, if anyone cares: 7 = fantastic

I saw online that the ending is terrible and as much as I'm enjoying this game, the news of a bad ending really sours my enjoyment.
Does this happen to anyone else?

Man this game gets better and better, I want to go back to Cronos but I am completely hooked on this one. This is one of the best games I have played in years

Seriously go and play it
