Hell is Us |OT| The world speaks. Listen closely.

It's not on the PS5 - I checked both in the browser store and on my console. I really hate time-limiting demos. They are supposed to sell you the idea of the game, but how are they supposed to help sales if they're removed so fast? Not everyone can download the demo as soon as it's available and games like Hell is Us often fly under the radar until the community notices them and starts spreading good word.

Finished the game, not gonna lie I had to look up some guides for some of the puzzles, lol. Like, even at the ending, after the mandatory fighting, the finale is basically a giant room puzzle. A unique thing, for sure.

Looked up the requirements for the platinum and one of the trophies is straight up 'kill every single enemy in every single zone of the game'. And you gotta do this without any map or enemies being marked for you.

Nah, fam, I'm good. Had fun with the game, not about to do that.

I had to look for that fucking library code, ugh...

I knew where it was supposed to be (books) but still couldn't figure it out, lol.

Game completed, I think it's very good and quite unique experience.

Now I will focus on finishing some unsolved stuff...

I am so happy to see the positive opinions here. I loved the demo, but Silksong torpedoed this for me on launch day. Going to pick this up very soon.

Man this game gets better and better, I want to go back to Cronos
I'm going between the two, too

Really enjoying them both. You can half tell the Dead Space, Silent Hill 2 semi asset stuff in Cronos, but I love it. That music too!

Hell is us is a surprising one too, not bad at all.

I'm about 10 hours in now, more people need to be talking about this game, it is a uniquely singular experience that lives up to promise of letting the player figure things with zero handholding, old-school principles brought into the modern age.

Few games achieve and atmosphere and mood the way Hell is Us manages to, this game has vibes for days. A big part of it is the soundscape which manages to be both unnerving and contemplative, foreboding and charged. The last couple of Deus Ex games had a similar sound profile so it's no surprise we have the same creative director here, he is tuned in (heh heh) to exactly what the world requires.

I'm loving the dark world and the willingness to "go there" with it's characters and the conflict that frames the entire backdrop of your journey. This is a brutal, bloody world. When one NPC talks about the "enemy" being dogs, murdering an entire family because they would have done the same, showing zero mercy or empathy then it should ignite thoughts within the player in relation to *our* world and the wars the are currently raging, it's not hard to imagine this is exactly how both sides view the other...

Combat feels great with solid DualSense implementation though it doesn't really start to open up until you unlock upgrades and slot glyphs. The drone is another element to spice things up, I love the booster module that allowse to zip around, more for traversal than combat lol. Still, it's clear the enemy variety (or lack thereof) is a problem, how much it dampens the experience over time remains to be seen.

Another complaint is the "dynamic" HUD, it isn't lol, your health bar/stamina etc remain on screen no matter what, would be nice if they patched it. I also think tracking stuff in game could be more intuitive, it's very easy to forget where certain things are, lots of locked doors/chests, would be cool if you could take pictures in the world, add notes, pin what location you took the pic etc. Sure you could take pics with your smartphone in the real world, break out a pen and paper but I just find that overly fussy and ultimately immersion breaking, keep me in the world!

I'm fundamentally against using guides on a first playthrough but I'll admit I looked up a computer code simply because I had zero recollection of picking up a note/reading it that gave clues, every single puzzle I figured out on my own, the one in the Nest was satisfying. I will try to stick to it though with every player it will come down to deciding what is the line where discovery/revelation transforms into tedium/aimlessness, looking forward to diving back into this world and unravelling more of it's myriad mysteries.

I'm in the 4th area, but i've largely been ignoring the elemental stuff and consumables. Is it important to understand all this grief, terror, etc. I've just been upgrading stuff and equipping stuff.
I also don't get what is going on with the enemies that have like an area of effect thing on the ground. ha! I just keep exploring and going forward.

Huh only on 5 pages eh?

Anyway I just bought this on a whim knowing pretty much nothing about it other than it being an atmospheric third person affair without any of the typical videogamey guidance or handholding. I am excite!

Finished it last night, 30+ hours, no guides (don't know why you would need a guide, none of the puzzles were particularly difficult), closed a bunch of Time Loops, finished 70% of the Good Deeds, opened 4 vaults, absolutely loved it.

Without a doubt the main draw of Hell is Us is it's narrative, world-building, sense of discovery and lore. It's impressive that they invented a fictional country with it's own rich history that exists within our actual, *real* world. All of this framed by the mythology of the supernatural elements and the factions intertwined with these strange events. This world, it's mysteries and it's various environments were more than enough to keep me fully engaged throughout which is important because the game has a lot combat but the foes you face get old rather quick.

The lack of enemy variety is this game's Achilles' Heel, I'm baffled by the choice to have this singular, homogenous enemy with only minor variation. Even more head-scratching is the almost complete absence of boss battles. I say almost because there is technically *one* boss battle in the entire game but that's literally it. This is a colossal missed opportunity, especially given the lore and how creative they could have got with the emotions, every key quest in Act 2 should have culminated in an epic battle with the associated emotion, shame that only Terror tried to do something with it.

I appreciate how the game handles it's optional quests and collectibles. This is one of those titles where I want to hunt down every last email, knick knack, written note, strange antique and everything in between primarily for the writing, just to learn more about this weird land. Case in point:

4XCjXNzP0DixgdN0.jpg

The Lodge of Loathing. Imagine finding your enemy so abhorrent that you willingly blindfold yourself so you don't need to see what you mercilessly slaughter (AND you forego sleep). Fucking badass.

I previously touched on Hell is Us' willingness to tackle heavy themes and it's one of the things I admire most about the game. In one location we learn from NPCs just how much the media manipulated the populace to hate each other, the tremendous power they wield to instigate conflict and brainwash the masses. As with the topic of war it should get you thinking of our reality and what the media does, they've been doing it for decades and in the age of social media it's only gotten worse. None of this comes off as preachy, it's simply solid, thoughtful rumination.

The art and some of the environments are truly impressive, often feeling mythical and otherworldly. Making your way through the Tower to reach the ramparts your met with hundreds of banners flapping in the wind, is is a powerful, lasting image. When going through more "traditional" environments like a lab or sleepy town the game seems to channel the likes of Resident Evil and Silent Hill, ultimately striking a nice balance between the familiar and strange and almost always giving the player something interesting to look at:

I enjoyed Hell is Us quite a bit. It was one of my most anticipated games of 2025 and it mostly delivered the goods. It's been a stellar year though and I think it came out at one of the worst possible times even *before* Silksong (amazing) was announced to be releasing the same day, talk about bad luck lol. I sincerely hope the game sells well enough to keep this dev team going, I want more. They are a creative team with something to say in an ever-crowded space, I wish them all the success in the world.

TheDarkPhantom TheDarkPhantom Man that's very impressive that you managed to do it without a guide.

Can I ask how you figured out the gate code in the 2nd area (across from the town of Jova at the research camp)? I had to look up a guide for that. Similarly there's a quest involving a baby, how did you surmise where to get the milk? And did you fail any of the Good Deeds you came across or manage to follow them through? I read that some can 'expire' if you continue the main story too far.

And does failing Good Deeds impact the ending?

1. I didn't open that gate until after I beat the game at which time I allowed myself to look up stuff. That's a tough one! Not required for beating the game though.

2. Milk was one of the easiest to figure out, simply remembered there was a living cow back at the farm . Sure enough, old man had some milk for me.

3. Entering Act 2 failed a Good Deed for me, annoying because I had no idea who the quest giver was and what they wanted, would have plat'd the game but there is no way I'm playing through it all again, way too many other games vying for my attention. Not sure if it affects the ending.

You can continue playing after finishing it but the failed Good Deeds remain that way. Right now I'm wrapping up a few other trophies before I move on, mostly for more narrative goodness.

Thanks.

Does combat ever get more involved than it currently is btw? Going from Nioh 2 to this (on default difficulty) is kind of a cake walk. Enemies die rather fast and you can easily get your health back as well. Stamina drain is almost non-existent either...

I have the Nioh 2 plat trophy, the combat there is on a whole other level but it's an unfair comparison, they are different games focused on different things. Eventually you will fight tier 3 entities - a couple of which are cool - but I never felt fundamentally challenged by the game.

Making my way through the game atm and really enjoying the experience so far! From a marketing perspective the game was completely drowned by releasing the same day as Silksong, which is a shame. It deserves some recognition for being the pretty damn unique experience that it is.
I'll probably post my overall impressions when I've finished the game.

But the main reason I'm posting here is

Has anyone else experienced enemy health bars all over the area being visible at all times on PS5? Is this a glitch or a feature of the game? Has anyone found a solution?

First I thought it was due to most enemies being dead, to help hunting down the last ones in each area (for the achievement). I've tried rebooting the console and they seem to be permanently visible at all times! Really annoying and totally kills the immersion.

Edit: Nvm, I found a solution. In case anyone else encounter the same problem:
Set "Enemy Damage Numbers" to "Hidden", unpause the game and then switch back to "Shown".

Edit2: Damn I thought I solved it but realized I'd just set the whole HUD to hidden. Well, I guess this is how the rest of my playthrough will look now unless I hide the HUD or it's getting patched. Enemy healthbars all over the place, like som old counterstrike wall hack.

Edit 3: Seems to disappear after setting the HUD to "Hidden" for a while when playing. I've reset it to default and so far it doesn't show the enemy health bars. It's definitely some sort of glitch.

Well, I finished the game just now and while most of the game was a solid experience I can't really say the same about that last act. It felt very rushed and was far from being a satisfying conclusion.

I still have some side content left, mostly consisting of mysteries. I've done all the good deeds so there's a possibility I'll go for the platinum at some point. But tbh I feel kinda "full" atm. The heavy tone and atmosphere really drills into your brain after a while.

Patch inc

What were the devs thinking with these difficulty spikes towards the end? This game was really good for the majority but its become no fun at all in the last act.

edit: of course right after I posted this I made some small changes to my relic and all of a sudden im decimating these enemies that were giving me trouble....

Been playing this after Silksong

17.5 hours in, loving every minutes. I love the atmosphere. Kudos to the level designer for those dungeons, I love exploring them and they are quite massive.

This game is being criminally overlooked. This should've been a similar breakout hit that Expedition 33 was IMO. It's an amazing mix of Dark Souls meets Resident Evil meets it's own thing.

Feel really bad for the devs with the super unfortunate timing with Silksong.

I would say if this game were similar to silksong via metroidvania style you would have an argument. But it's a whole different type of game.

I haven't finished it yet but it's been a great ride so far.

It's a new IP and a weird concept from a lesser known developer and it's main marketing push was how difficult it is and how it doesn't hold the players hand at all. It just needed all the help it could get to get eyes on it and for people to give it a try, and instead it launched on the same day as one of the biggest releases of the year.

That and there's definitely at least a bit of an overlap in customers who might be interested in a game like this and a game like Silksong (challenge/art style/obsure & labyrinthian approach to design/lower price point/etc..)

Interesting thoughts. For me it's like checkers and chess. Those who love checkers never would attempt the chess genre to begin with.

There's a fanbase for those into it. Like, you know, an example could be CRPGs. There's a a demographic for that. People who love CRPGs are just that. Not into anything else. So when people say GTA is scaring other devs, I just don't think that matters. Play your GTA, I'll play my chess cuz I'm not ingo GTA at all. Different lanes. Different set of sales.

This is my next biggie after I finish yotei…I would have played it first, but I had just finished cronos, and it felt like for the past 6 months I'd been mostly playing back to back horror, needed a break.

Chose this over Yotei. Just installed on the Pro.

I want some zero guidance action. I wanna take notes while exploring and shit. I just want something DIFFERENT. I don't care if there's enemy and puzzle repetition. Bring it the fuck on I says.

Incredible game. In my top 3 for this year with Expedition 33 and Wuchang. I want it more, hopefully a long dlc or a sequel.

I'm utterly fascinated by this so far. I'm still at the dead beginning and just got the sword, but man what a nice change of pace. Lots of mid-late 90s PC adventure game feels Just introducing you to this world and truly letting the player figure out what the hell is going on and what to do.

I haven't had one of these look in every corner and nook experiences in a minute and I love it. Just the whole introductory woods section is so beautiful and creepy. Atmosphere and ambient sounds are top notch too. Can't wait to dive in more tonight.

Finished the game last night

Almost 100%? I missed one good deed.

Fantastic game. Kudos to the level designers honestly, the dungeons felt meaty. The combat I also liked and while they visually are pretty repetitive, the variants of levels and cores at least was not too bad. I think they have a good baseline for a sequel. I loved parrying, had the item equipped that raised up my dmg after a parry and it was OP as fuck.

I also loved the puzzles, I had a notebook next to me and I have tons of pages to keep the mysteries or puzzles traceability, I haven't done that since a long time, I think the last time was Tunic.

The ending was a let down though. All that build up and it fizzles out. Reminds of Deus Ex's human revolution ending which is made by some of the same members of the team, it seem they have hard time making a good ending.

Also a bit too much backtracking for trying to do 100%.

Overall a good 8/10, enjoyed it a lot. I think they have a good recipe for a sequel if they listen to feedback.

Picked this up today since deluxe was on sale for $63 on PSN.

Redid the demo parts and really vibing with it all over again. Combat here is just so satisfying. It's not flooded with mechanics and gives it a nice brisk flow in the early parts so far.

Uuuuuh. Thought I was going to be playing some souls like combat open world game with lore in notes on some sci fi shit.

Then I reached Jova… and wow.

Would be nice, but I would not count on it. For some reason this game is just completely under the radar.
I mean it launched in a terrible timing window.

Had they delayed to early November? Nice! Or early January.

It needed exposure. It also had marketing make you think it's one thing then you play it, and it's only after the demo ends, you realize what it really is going for.

The demo is NOT doing this enough justice for its themes and brutal portrayal of war and genocide.

Sure, apparently they have around 60 people, but the game took a long time to make. I doubt it has reached profitability yet (or will any time soon) but would like to be wrong.
It sounds like they are already working on there next game.

No hard numbers but from that interview.

" A microbudget compared to Triple A"
"Well below $70 million dollars"

It sounds like they are okay, they probably only need to sell a few hundred thousand units to break even.

I will forever think that the title of this game is one of the best of all time. Wholly original. It sticks with you.

I need to get back to it, but fuck man there's just so much out there and I've been getting sucked into old shit lately.

I still need to buy it. Working on Ghost now and then I'm not sure so maybe I'll try to fit it in then.

Such a strange comment I'm about to make but they is one of the greatest Zelda games ever created but I'm giving up on it about halfway through and watching the ending.
The dungeons and overworld are amazing but there's just to much going on and it's sensory overload.
Incredible game though but I just wish I was clever enough for it.

I'm confused by this comment. Just follow a guide if you need to?

I mean I've dropped games I like because they overstay their welcome so I get that but if the puzzles are just too much then just google the solutions and press on.

—-

I completed the game yesterday and it took 25 hours.

7/10, but one I really want a sequel for.

Sequel needs to:
-Give more enemy types. A LOT more.
-More bosses. A LOT more.
-More customization poncho options
-More biomes/variety of scenery
-Provide a better challenge for combat even on merciless it's a joke until the very last area with 4 giant enemies
-Save system needs reworking so I can create true manual save slots.

That's it though. I loved the combat flow and mechanics, puzzles were aces, good deed side quests, the atmosphere, the plot , and had a great time.

I would say it drags on near the end but ends right when it should. I was going to platinum this but one side quest failed with no way to load an earlier save slot so I can fix the issue. I wasn't going to replay to do that.

18 hours played.

I really liked it first 10 hours, slightly less the next 5 and thinking about quitting the last 3.

Not that it got much worse. But..

- There is simply too much combat and the combat is not very interesting
- the gameloop is getting stale
- story devolved into searching for McGuffin keys
- the "no quest log or markers" design is more annoying than interesting; I am just not that into remembering which of the dozen random NPCs wanted which specific item

It is a good game I guess, but I am losing the will to continue. And I hate leaving games unfinished, when so much time got invested. Dammit.

Finally finished it. The first few hours I saw the praise it was getting, I enjoyed it, I was engrossed in its mystery and atmosphere. As I approached half-way the lore/mystery started to show its boring, uninspiring face, as if they just kinda ran out of ideas on where to go with it, same with the main story. BUT the worst offender? Holy fucking shit, the combat, enemy variety absolute dogshit. Just as bad as Silent Hill F and the final area was the cherry on top of the turd. This game completely went from an 8 in the first 10 or so hours to 6 as I watched the ending. What the fuck were those boss fights lmao? The only redeeming quality it had was the no hand-holding, the exploration and the puzzles. Can't recommend it. Disappointed with it.
