SPECTRE theme song released - Writing's On The Wall by Sam Smith

Just listened, it's alright. Don't like his falsetto though which is unfortunately on like half the lyrics. I can't remember, do the movies use the full version of the theme song or they edit it down to fit the titles sequence? I think this could actually benefit from an edit like that. I'm also interesting in that instrumental version.

As is, I think it's just ok.

I don't know how true this is, but apparently that song was her audition or submission for a potential theme for Spectre (I don't know for sure)? If so, I'm stunned that they went with Smith's song over it. You can tell Lana actually spent time working on the song and made the best she could, as opposed to Smith's gleeful achievement at writing a new song in under a half hour.

EDIT: Yup, looks like "24" was indeed Lana's submission and somehow lost out to Smith's song.

The only logical reason I could even think of as to why they picked his song over this is that he was maybe cheaper than Lana?

Nah, I can see why they'd pass; it sounds very old school-ish Bond, which they've steered away from on Craig Bond themes (see: passing on Shirley Bassey's theme for QoS). Also, it has the exact same problem as Smith's song in that it doesn't really build to a climax at all.

Someone mentioned that they kept waiting for the big moment, but it never came. Exact same thought. Not digging it at all. It isn't terrible, just terribly boring.

Guessing this isn't representative of his vocal work since a few posts are saying they normally like Sam Smith vocals "but..."

Song strangely reminds me of "It's a Long Road" from First Blood for whatever reason. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGsu86C9ASg

I took to "Skyfall" on the first listen. I dunno that I'm into this. Mostly the vocals...

Edit: I kind of like the "You Only Live Twice" vibe I get from the Lana Del Rey song.

I don't think it's bad but I'll agree that it doesn't seem like Bond at all. It feels like a theme for a sad love story.

I really like his vocals when he goes completely high pitched and sounds like a female. I think that is really cool.
How the hell do the lyrics fit with the theme of the movie?

Lyrics:

[Verse 1]
I've been here before
But always hit the floor
I've spent a lifetime running
And I always get away
But with you I'm feeling something
That makes me want to stay

I'm prepared for this
I never shoot to miss
But I feel like a storm is coming
If I'm gonna make it through the day
Then there's no more use in running
This is something I gotta face

[Pre-Chorus]
If I risk it all
Could you break my fall?

[Chorus]
How do I live? How do I breathe?
When you're not here I'm suffocating
I want to feel love, run through my blood
Tell me is this where I give it all up?
For you I have to risk it all
Cause the writing's on the wall

[Verse 2]
A million shards of glass
That haunt me from my past
As the stars begin to gather
And the light begins to fade
When all hope begins to shatter
Know that I won't be afraid

[Pre-Chorus]
If I risk it all
Could you break my fall?

[Chorus]
How do I live? How do I breathe?
When you're not here I'm suffocating
I want to feel love, run through my blood
Tell me is this where I give it all up?
For you I have to risk it all
Cause the writing's on the wall

[Bridge: Instrumental]
The writing's on the wall

[Chorus]
How do I live? How do I breathe?
When you're not here I'm suffocating
I want to feel love, run through my blood
Tell me is this where I give it all up?
How do I live? How do I breathe?
When you're not here I'm suffocating
I want to feel love, run through my blood
Tell me is this where I give it all up?
For you I have to risk it all
Cause the writing's on the wall

Why does everyone keep going on about it only taking 20 minutes to write? Writing is easy, it's the composition that takes time.

The gf and I both agree that even Die Another Day is better.

Wow wow let's not get carried away here. This one is very forgettable, but Die another day is offensively bad. Not only does it suck but it can get stuck in your head too. Really vile stuff.

I usually love Sam Smith. Now, though... who thought it was a good decision to make him sing half the chorus in falsetto? At least he should have sung the final chorus in full chest/head voice, to give it more punch.

The thing with Writing's on the Wall is it's instantly forgettable, nothing memorable about it at all. No hook, or anything distinguishable. Just bland. Bleh

Snooze. Should have gone with someone else. I prefer Sam's poppier stuff, his slow stuff is really boring.

This will get very little radio play.

Die Another Die had a beat, and at least wasn't boring. Writing's on the wall is just bumfluff. Someone strangling a cat, over the backing track of nothing interesting.

Agreed. Like many others have said, there's a build-up for something that never comes.

It's what you would get if you gave the bond theme job to someone who has only ever heard Skyfall and All Time High.

Started off strong, then Sam Smith came in and ruined it. His falsetto is quite awful. If anybody else were singing, it would probably be better. The vocal doesn't seem to fit the track either. I expected it to be much better when I heard the intro. Maybe it'll grow on me.

EDIT: That was my first reaction, will obviously listen again. I still believe it would be much better if anybody else were singing. Sam Smith does not deliver.

It's okay. Not as good as Sky fall but better than about half the themed in the franchise. Won't be a classic. I like the orchestration.

Climax like:

not really a fan but i don't listen to Sam Smith. Skyfall was p boss, Another Way to Die by Jack White was great, and You Know My Name was fantastic. Daniel Craig finally gets a shitty song
