Just listened, it's alright. Don't like his falsetto though which is unfortunately on like half the lyrics. I can't remember, do the movies use the full version of the theme song or they edit it down to fit the titles sequence? I think this could actually benefit from an edit like that. I'm also interesting in that instrumental version.
As is, I think it's just ok.
Nah, I can see why they'd pass; it sounds very old school-ish Bond, which they've steered away from on Craig Bond themes (see: passing on Shirley Bassey's theme for QoS). Also, it has the exact same problem as Smith's song in that it doesn't really build to a climax at all.

I don't know how true this is, but apparently that song was her audition or submission for a potential theme for Spectre (I don't know for sure)? If so, I'm stunned that they went with Smith's song over it. You can tell Lana actually spent time working on the song and made the best she could, as opposed to Smith's gleeful achievement at writing a new song in under a half hour.
EDIT: Yup, looks like "24" was indeed Lana's submission and somehow lost out to Smith's song.

The only logical reason I could even think of as to why they picked his song over this is that he was maybe cheaper than Lana?
