I like this song fine enough but damn why didn't she take it lol

Well, reportedly anyway. I don't know for sure if that exact number has been explicitly confirmed, but it definitely was at least in the millions, that much is for sure.

I guess she turned it down because Skyfall was so well received and she didn't want to deal with having to live up to the expectations set by it.

It's saved from being the worst Craig Bond theme thanks to the generosity of Jack White, who wrote one of the most epically bad Bond themes ever.

This is too boring to reach that level of awfulness.

I say that one was Alicia Keys's fault because I say so.

So what is this site's consensus on Sam Smith as a musical talent?

I get the sense his career arc in the "soul" genre has been crafted to follow Adele's to a tee. Nothing really wrong with that, but I wonder if people think it is appropriate

Honestly his voice annoys me, most of his songs are bland whiny pls love me shite (replete with simpering vocals), and he's boring and seems to have the charisma of a black hole.

They'd never do this but they could salvage the situation by using the instrumental for the opening credits and having Smith's version as background noise ala From Russia with Love.

Just bought it... looking forward to it.

Brb.

Had an interesting direction but leads to no where.

I mean, a movie about an evil organization, you'd think they'd try to base the theme around that then try to evoke minimalist-based self-reflection of franchise character which, for Sam's case, was a bunch of null.

Well, I just did it.

I don't even know what to think.. I was completely in love with SKYFALL when I first heard it - but with this song, I think I'll have to let it sink in.

I didn't expect it to be this bad. His falsetto is appalling, and they decide to expose it during the most prominent part of the song. As mentioned in the other thread, he sounds like he's choked up with a cold. It's so unclear - I think the line after 'I wanna feel love' is 'right through my blood', but it sounds like 'with you my fluv' the first time. I could only figure it out due to him enunciating it slightly better the second and third time. Terrible diction.

But even if it was sung with clarity I don't think that is the biggest problem. It's just a weak and unmemorable melody, with no great instrumental 'hook', no interesting structure and completely undeserving of the 'climax' that they've tried to generate with the (admittedly great) production.

Disappoint, 2/10.

I'm not sure what I think of this, personally. I was expecting something a lot worse than what I'm hearing, especially since Smith was raving about he wrote the whole thing in "just twenty minutes."

At least it's nowhere near as bad as Another Way to Die.

Not as bad as I imagined after hearing other songs from him, but eh. Pretty boring. Not bondish. The opening sequence may help a bit, but still a pretty boring song.

I keep waiting for that big moment to come and it never does.

Not a bad song at all but I will need to hear it set to the titles and the theme of the movie to rate it.

Terrible tbh. Get into the superior Bond-ish song, 24 by Lana Del Rey.

I don't know how true this is, but apparently that song was her audition or submission for a potential theme for Spectre (I don't know for sure)? If so, I'm stunned that they went with Smith's song over it. You can tell Lana actually spent time working on the song and made the best she could, as opposed to Smith's gleeful achievement at writing a new song in under a half hour.

EDIT: Yup, looks like "24" was indeed Lana's submission and somehow lost out to Smith's song.

The only logical reason I could even think of as to why they picked his song over this is that he was maybe cheaper than Lana?

So much hate for Another Way to Die.

I liked it, a good mix of innovation and classic Bond tropes, just like the movie. But also just like the movie, most people just want the same thing over and over instead.

Also dat Woolly Mammoth guitar pedal sound.
I'm with you. It's a good song.

It feels like it builds up to some big finish that never comes.

Also I don't like his voice for all those high notes.

*shrugs shoulders*

It's solid...., I suppose.

oh well....
That did not win me over. Sam Smith is still a bad choice for a bond song in general, even if he have some good songs. You shouldn't let a mellow singer sing a bombastic theme anyway.

Sounds crap, didn't expect much else. He has a good voice but his writing and own music are pretty dull in general and most of the time he doesn't even allow himself to let loose with his voice which is pretty laughable.

Who should do the theme for the next movie?
My pick: NOEL mothereffin' GALLAGHER

I knew it. When they announced Sam Smith was doing the song. Fucking hell, to go from Skyfall to this...
