Speculate!: PS3 SKUs

Now that MS has let loose on its plans, what do you think Sony will do?

Well, we can guarantee that they'll release one pack without a HD...

but is it possible that we'll see similar to the X360 a premium pack upon release?

Would that be a good or bad idea? Our expectation was a HD with all X360, but not so with the PS3... so would a split SKU in this case actually be considered a positive thing?

What about the prices?

I think the basic package will come with a wireless controller, no hard drive, but both standard composite A/V cables as well as a HDMI cable. Retails for about $350.

Despite what I've said, I don't see them releasing a second SKU.

But I think the storage will be transperant enough that the functional difference between an internal hard drive, a network hard drive, USB mass storages and flash cards will simply be the available space on them.
Stuff like custom soundtracks will probably be supported similar to the X360, with the OS handling the storage and the game interfacing with the OS for to stream music or whatnot.

When the designer says it's too expensive for your average household...you know your in trouble.

When PS3 debuts I'd expect it to be drastically scaled down from what was first shown....it's simply too feature packed. Ken only got away with it because he was the Sony chief by proxy...now Mr English bloke has taken over, he doesn't have that to fall back on. PSP has already shown the Katguri folly of raw power at expense of price structure. There's only so many losses Sony can continue to take.

I think Sony was/is planning to do whatever MS didn't. If MS included a HD standard, Sony wouldn't. Now that MS isn't, Sony will. Whatever makes PS3 games difficult to port to other systems.

I predict the PS3 will be sold as it's been shown so far, sans HDD, for a single $350 SKU. Sony will sell a 2.5" HDD kit for $60-70, but any 2.5" HDD can be used.

Oh, and the controller pack-in will be wireless.

Bare bones PS3 (no hard drive) = $399
PS3 + Hard drive + headphones = $499
PS3 + Hard drive + headphones + Online kit = $549

They'll release one sku and sell the hdd seperately.

Pretty much. Unless things just get, you know, to the point of fucking parody and Sony launches two SKUs: One with Blu-Ray, one without.

(I'm kidding, you should know I'm kidding, put the flamethrowers down.)

Ok. Thanks. I woulda never guessed.

Anyway. I think there's only gonna be one SKU, just like the PS and PS2. I don't see why they need it, they've always launched really expensively in the past, and they'll do it again.

I guess Sony is going to sit back and see how this all pans out for Microsoft,if consumers can handle skus without confsion,if the media maybe accpet both and not rip them for it. If it pans out ok then I wouldn't be shocked to see Sony selling two variants of the PS3 also. One for $350-the other for $400. They can get away by charging more for thecore unit-theyre the market leader and have that name that todays gamers flock to.

There will be one SKU.

Why would there be 2 SKUs?

MS only put 2 SKUs out because they wanted to still appeal to HDD minded XBox owners - there is no other reason for it.

Sony has never trumpeted the HDD and never sold units to consumers because of that feature so why would they all of a sudden put out an extra SKU for something 95% of their consumers don't care about?

And in doing so splinter and confuse the market.

HDD will be an accessory - either bundled with a game or sold on its own.

MS/CF/SD cards replace most of the functionality of a HDD anyway apart from MMORPG installations.

I expect those type of games to come in HDD bundles.

One SKU, 399.99 in the US and about 500 in Japan.

Include: PS3 hardwae unit, power cord, AV cables, and one wireless controller.

Most places will probably sell a value pack though.

I'm actually hoping for one $499 SKU that is so loaded to the gills that it makes the X360 look obsolete. Probably wishful thinking though.

One SKU, $350-400. No HDD, but that 'Wi-Fi' bulletpoint is a $100 'advantage' to them anyway. Can't see anyone buying an X360 over a PS3 at the same pricepoint.
Personally I'm curious as to see what Sonys reaction (especially marketing) to this will be.

Simply brilliant.

:lol

Let me join in:
1 SKU: PS3, 1 controller, av cables, no hdd - for $350 (though $399 wouldn't surprise me either)
Games to be $60 for most stuff, even first party ones. Of course some publishers will release cheaper games, while other will rape you extra hard (somethin akin to a namco museum for $60).

$299 is a pipe dream.

My guess:
$399 PS3 with component cables, wireless controller, Wi-Fi, Blu-ray movie (or at least some trailers to show off the HD video capabilities) and maybe a 64MB-128MB Memory Stick like the PSP.

Hard Drive will be sold separately and just used as a big memory card.

at least you dont have to fork out a shitload of money for the hdmi since the ps3 has a standart dvi out (dual as it is ) on the back.
note I'm not aware how much these cost by default

I don't think you can use DVI/HDMI with X360 at all, unless they decided to change the video encoder chip.

$299 PS3 with one controller, power cord, video cables (not component)

$399 PS3 with one controller, power cord, 2 sets of video cables, 50gig hard drive

in Japan same thing but at $399 and $499 respectively.

How on earth could you refer to a HDD-less PS3 as "crippled." Sony hasn't been pushing the HDD as the wave of the future for the last four years. PS2 games never used the HDD for caching, and we don't have any reason to believe develoeprs will start with the PS3.

I really doubt that the HDD is gonna be a significant part of the Sony strategy, but i see feasible 2 SKU, one being a bundle ala PSP.
So i will say:

PS3+1 Controller+A/V Cable=400$
PS3+1 Controller+HD Cables+1 memory stick=500$

Well I think Kutaragi keeps mentioning the HDD for a reason. He at first said it wouldn't be included but as time passed from E3 he's been saying he isn't sure what their stance is on the HDD. I think they were just waiting to see what MS did with their HDD and then they would pick the appropriate counter-measure that would make their system better in terms of HDD usage and pricing.

He mentions it to perhaps entice HDD-lovin' XBox owners.

It's better than not mentioning it at all but it will never be a focus for their strategy.

I think by including a hub and wifi in PS3 they're going to pay more attention to online next gen than anything else since every PS3 owner (and that's potentially 100M consumers) will then be able to partake in the microtransactions for games, movie and music they've been talking about for the last 2 years.

Download to MS (or CF/SD) and then playback on PS3 or PSP :D

- PS3 Standard $399 - system, power cable, AV cable, wireless controller

- PS3 Value Pack $499 - system, 32MB memory stick duo, headphone with remote, soft case, wrist strap, ac adapter, battery, screen wipe.... errr.... wait....

One SKU at $299. Just like the PlayStation, PlayStation 2.

That's my prediction too.And I'm amazed in seeing how Sony is amazing in letting people believe they're receiving much more value than they actually are.
They did it with PS2 (OMG it's a DVD player! No way it costs less than 400!) then with PSP (OMG only the screen costs 300$! :lol ) and now with PS3 (with Kutaragi partying after Microsoft believed his comments)
But Sony is also an electronics producer that develops in house a lot of core technologies,it can pack much more value in a box than a software company like Microsoft for the same price.
So I think PS2 will launch at the same price of PS1 and 2.
