Speedrunning Thread - RESETRESETRESET

Goddamn, the Infinite Double Bomb Jump trick in Metroid: Zero Mission is really difficult to get the timing down on. It's also practically required for the ideal 100% run. This will take time :/

Personally, I think I'd say that there should just be a standard set to be judged with, be at JP carts, VC, iQue, or whatever. It should be one standard that they use officially for competing with the game, and the other options can still be run but not really used in consideration for the world record best.

I'd rather see the community be more inclusive than see the community stress out about world records.

I'd rather see the community be more inclusive than see the community stress out about world records.

I'd see it more as a "this is the main event" and "this is for messing around" kind of thing.

How an exhibition match in a sport doesn't interfere with a serious game.

People can still run and compete in other versions of the game, but a certain version of a game is used for consideration in what the official world record of a game is.

it just doesn't need to be so black or white, all or nothing.

For the most part it's like that. The whole do whatever is fastest normally means everyone is playing the same version. Even emulators are mostly emulating the fastest version that people are playing.

I really think people take WR business too seriously. I know runners run games with the intent of getting the best time possible and for many of the larger and more popular streamers it is WR attempts or bust but at a certain point it's all about what the community wants. Ask someone what the 120 star WR is and they'll say 1:44:01 by Siglemic and not whatever VC times beat that.

I just really don't care. These sort of problems tend to solve themselves eventually anyway, either with the runners for these games/categories coming together to decide things or the community at large deciding them.

Interesting post in the Something Awful speedrun thread about Silent Hill 2 -

So, Silent Hill 2 has recently become rather broken. New WR of 47:52, fairly unoptimized because of new strats.

Basically, the people who ported the game to PC didn't do a particularly good job adding PC-exclusive features like quicksaving. Quicksaving instantly refills your stamina allowing you to run at a full sprint constantly without slowing down and also allows you to pass through certain areas where a text box would otherwise block your progress, this lets you skip the first monster encounter, the Radio and the Plank which also means Silent Hill does not get populated with enemies outdoors.

Also, it lets you regain control during cutscenes which is mostly used for screwing about rather than any practical application but it's still cool. And as a bonus these glitches scramble the hell out of the in-game subtitles from time to time, resulting in Flashlights named "Catacomb" and the text "Do you wish to format?" getting stuck on the screen.

silent hill speedrunning is cool and largely underrated

Neat!

Jadin got 28:49 in Out of Bounds category for A Link to the Past, which is the best time in that category by over 8 and half minutes.

Really impressive run that has some incredibly difficult tricks. Most notably: the hover over the gap at moldorm 2, requiring 27 consecutive frame perfect inputs.

People who stream speedruns to whore out for donations make me sick. It's one thing to get them an announce them on stream, and it's a complete other story to have a fucking rent counter in the corner of your layout to get people to donate.

Would anyone be interested in an online GAF Marathon? I think it could be rad.

On a personal note, I've hit about 49 minutes in Rise of the Triad. I can definitely shave a few minutes off that, made a lot of mistakes and ran into some bad luck(not to mention a game crash), but it feels good :D

So my favorite moment ever in Goose's chat just happened:

YJu2iDv.png

He got screwed out of a sub 21 two times in a row because of Bowser throws.

Somebody in the chat responded with "What do you mean it's the game's fault? Take accountability for your mistakes."

That wasn't the correct response.

Goose has that fun mix of video game skill/knowledge and sports interest that makes me happy to watch him. I loved watching him speedrun Mario Golf a few weeks ago while talking about golf.

That sounds cool. I'm not sure how many we would actually get, though.

I think a thread on gaming side could nab a handful of people. Hell, I think it might get a few interested in speedrunning, which would be wonderful. Doesn't have to be for a while, so new people would have plenty of time to learn a game. I'd be happy to setup a paypal with a charity(probably Doctors Without Borders) whenever we get to it.

Oh, and the "beta" version of ADGQ 2014 Highlights / Bloopers is up!

I don't understand. What's going on in this video that's so surprising?
What's supposed to happen when he got knocked back from the red panel with the skull is fall into the lava, but that didn't happen there. He managed to land on the stopwatch panel which shouldn't have happened. He just fell off later on by himself cause he didn't realize what happened lol.

BTW everyone, there is a Metroid Marathon going on right now on the Ludendi channel (the same one as ESA).

Schedule is here

As of this post, Dragondarch is doing a Low% Hard run of Metroid: Zero Mission, with Metroid II and Another Metroid 2 Remake coming up. Lots of quality runners and commentators in there, including Kirbymastah, Zoasty, Kottpower, MilesSMB, JaggerG, EmptyEye, SinisterWon, KronicSauce and more!

Half-Life in 20:41

* This run sets the new world record for a segmented speedrun of Half-Life on Hard difficulty with an improvement of 9 minutes. (29:41 » 20:41).

Starting back in the summer of 2010, the estimated time for this run was thought to be roughly 27 minutes. However, after almost four years of painstaking planning, theorycrafting and execution, we have arrived at our final time, smashing all of our wildest expectations.

Not only do we owe this new world-record time to all the new tricks we've discovered, the new routes we've found and the new ways we've
learned to manipulate the game. A lot of the improvement from the first estimation and the previous world record (29 minutes, 41 seconds)
comes from the very hard work and countless hours put into perfecting each and every segment, no matter how short or trivial. This run has
truly been an endurance test for everyone involved, and we're extremely happy to finally be able to share it with you.

Enjoy, Half-Life in 20 minutes, 41 seconds!

Hmmm, it starts with SM3DW...I want to play that game eventually. I don't know if I should watch it or not. :/
Cursed to early morning slots. No surprise. What an awesome lineup, though. It looks way better than AGDQ.
Hope you're well rested for your runs. Wishing you some early good luck!
