I really, really like Andrew Garfield as Peter/Spidey. If we could just somehow go back in time and alter events so that Garfield was Peter in the Raimi films (and Emma Stone as Mary Jane), everything would be perfect, and then in the future it'd be someone like Zac Effron stuck in the current ASM dreck.

SM2 is not the best because the loss of powers related to high stress is not believable in the non-mutant super hero Marvel universe

Upon further research, I found it happened in the comic!

Stupid or not, it came from the source material! Which is usually a complaint of the Raimi films. They took that and combined it with the Spider-Man no more story, which convinced me that Raimi has a great grasp of the character and really was a fan. In my opinion, he did it better than the comic book lol.

He may not have focused on a quip heavy Spider-Man, but I think all the Jameson stuff makes up for that. TASM pulls from a different line of Spidey, and it gets some of it right like Spider-Man's charisma and all. But they absolutely drop the ball when it comes to putting the actual story to film. Especially in TASM2, that movie has no idea what it's trying to be.

The warped comparison in my head is Raimi = Batman '66, Webb = Burton. I like Adam West Batman more than Burton's, but appreciated Burton's as a reader. And like Batman The Animated Series, Spectacular Spider-Man is far better than both.

IMHO, if you put Garfield and Stone into the Raimi films with the Raimi scripts, I'm pretty certain they could do much better than both Toby and Dunst did in the Raimi movies. They are both great at acting, it's the horrible scripts in TASM1 & 2 that bring the movies down and make it seem like Toby and Dunst do a better job.

Definitely think Stone could fit in well as MJ. Don't think Garfield could fit in well with Tobey's Peter Parker. I don't think there is any chance he could pull it off like Tobey did. Dude has become pretty underrated around these parts, imo.

I love me some Spectacular Spider-Man.

Jesus thank you. I knew this shit had happened, but I don't have the patience to sift through issues.

Watched the first movie from both directors last weekend. There is no contest comparing the two, Raimi is FAR superior.

Both have flaws, but Raimi seems to identify a distinct difference between Parker with and without the mask on and the journey the character takes to become the hero(even if it gets a bit silly and lamebrain in the final act). I constantly had issues and questions surrounding how Webb developed the character and providing reason for me to give a shit.

Even ignoring the super-villain plots entirely in both films, the origin story was better handled and more entertaining from Raimi. Both suffer from 'pixie girl' treatments in terms of Gwen and MJ both swooning for unearned reasons over Parker, but Parker at least had a distinct personality from Spiderman coming from Raimi. A problem I found Garfield and Webb failed to deliver on in ASM1.

Good. As we can see without fanboyism or nostalgia for either series, a clear winner is established.

And Spider-Man 2 is even less of a contest.

ASM's Peter is such an annoying asshole who causes all the tragedy around him and never takes responsibility or gets blamed for it.

I kinda feel like once The Amazing Spider-Man finished its origin story part it was a good movie. Unfortunately half The Amazing Spider-Man is its origin story and that is not really anywhere on the level of Spider-Man.

That said Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy beats out Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane. If Webb's 3rd movie can give me a really good MJ then I'll be sold.

I don't know if it's been said, but if you could take Webb's Spiderman & Gwen and swap them into Raimi's Movies, we would all be much happier... with the 1st 2 Spiderman movies at least.

can't speak for ASM3, but I would hope that it's better than SM3

Raimi's films were not written by Roberto Orci, so they've got a pretty major head start.

Yes, even the third one.

As long as we're not swapping out Raimi's Peter, because I felt he was still the better Peter.

Spider-Man 3 was nuts but the scene where the kid swindles JJJ for the camera is 100% lifted from the comics. Raimi is a true fanboy.

I wouldn't!

Can't speak for ASM2(haven't seen), but I still fail to understand why everyone is so big on Garfield as being a better SM(Parker is still hotly debated...but the correct answer there is Raimi). The CG fight choreography is superior in ASM1(technology!), but I can't recall a single quip or line of dialogue from Garfield in costume that makes me a believer why anyone feels he was a better SM.

As for Gwen vs. MJ? Meh, both are unearned in terms of winning Parker's hearts as each immediately start swooning for no real discernible reason("Manic Pixie Dream Girl Syndrome!). I suppose it can be argued that Garfield standing up to the bully early in ASM1 captured Emma's interest...but then why isn't the kid 'ACTUALLY' being bullied Spider-man? Where is the hero's journey in Webb's film? That tangent aside, Emma Stone was more involved in ASM1 beyond being an object of interest and damsel in distress...so yay?

And then there was the scene of Garfield prattling around with the car-jacker...very nearly shut off the movie at that moment. Just a terrible introduction to Spider-man considering I was rooting for the jacker to shut that ponce up. Better SM how?? "Oh here comes the boys in blue, drunken idiot costume man did 80% of your stupid job! Love me GAF!"

Alot of the fans of the Webb movies on why they're "superior" (get it?) sound as if they would be satisfied with 2hrs of Spider-Man swinging, hanging with Gwen and fighting only. No one ever defends the "plots" of these films or the lack of character development. Its clearly a youtube generation that favors these movies. Those with the shorter attention spans and only know instant gratification. This does not make a good movie, for any character/genre of film.

I'm team Raimi. I enjoyed the stories for Goblin and Doc Ock and wish Venom had that chance as well. Regardless, no one can ever claim Tobey is a crybaby after this film. A guy with Daddy issues is pretty and isn't my Spider-Man.

edit: that should have said "isn't pretty" on that last sentence.

Don't think you should insult the audience, the films do that enough.

That was what I was basically thinking about Garfield's Spidey when watching ASM1. Is this what the comic fans want for this Spiderman? Obnoxious quipping that probably sounds better in comics but doesn't fit in well on screen?

Heh. Good one.

With the way ASM2 sounds, I know I'm gonna be in for something once I actually see it.

Lol, Doc Ock 's character was all over the place. All of Raimi 's villains are sympathetic characters who turned bad due to forces out of their control. Both Doc Ock and Goblin were very similar - both liked Peter / Spider-Man too. Btw, how did Doc Ock become good again at the end of 2? I'm asking because I don't remember. And why did he lose his powers, btw? Tobey might not be a crybaby but he is annoying as f***. That train scene as well - so cringeworthy.

Raimi's Spider-Man was just not funny as well and it certainly doesn't have a scene as powerful as the one in TAS2.

There was a powerful scene in TAS2?

Doc Ock turned around because Peter was able to get through to him by teaching him a lesson that Peter himself had to learn beforehand.

Train-scene is still excellent, and shows off Spidey's powers.

And lol @ TASM2's "powerful scene".

More powerful than any of the other Marvel movies, at least.

What was it? The scene where Electro hears the hilarious metal chanting or the cartoony death of a girl who basically caused her own death to happen?

I don't see why you're attacking other Marvel movies, either. Aside from Ironman and Avengers I don't care for them, and neither of those are emotional powerhouses.

Sandman's origin transformation sequence was amazing, SM3 has lots of poo but the casting of Sandman was great.

Agreed. I don't think Sandman is the most interesting villain, but the actor nailed the role and he was a pretty good sympathetic villain. It's just a shame about SM3's plot. While I found the scene when Peter forgives him to be really touching, the whole concept of him being the one to murder Ben was pretty damn absurd. The guy didn't even prepare a getaway car and his master plan to make money was getting an accomplice to rob an underground wrestling ring.

U mad bro?

Also, isn't the bold exactly what the villains in Webb's movies have tried to be? A lot less competently, though.

Raimi with ease. I hate cheesy shit and yet, his execution is so darn well that I love SM1/2 nonetheless. Those two movies also feel rather cohesive and decently well thought through.

Meanwhile Amazing SM1 is one of these absolutely forgettable movies. There simply isn't a single good redeeming quality about them to me. Mind you, I'm of the few rare people that don't feel like Emma Stone is any good. Saw her first in Easy-A or how it's called and boy was I let down after hearing so much good about it. Garfield I kinda like but not as Spider-Man it would seem. Hard to tell if it's acting or the script but he just comes over as an annoying jerk and his nerdy moments (the stuttering especially) feel about as unnatural as it gets.

Anyways the soundtrack alone catapults SM1/2 far ahead of the new movies.

edit:
I prefer the Raimi films, but I enjoyed the Lizard quite a bit.

Wow, probably the first and last time I'll hear this. That Lizard could hardly be less memorable imo. *shrug*

The movie you describe is The Avengers and it's great. That's misrepresenting the problems with ASM2.
