Splatoon Esports Tournament Series Launched In Japan - Over $1 million

most smash players refuse to leave Melee, if Nintendo said something about a Smash U tournament I am sure the first responses will be something along the lines of "this sucks, bring melee".

What?>??!?!?

Did you see the amount of entrants into EVO for Smash 4?

Guys, why would they do anything for Smash 4? It'd be much more efficient to just mail any prizes straight to Zero.

Cool that Splatoon is getting this. Hopefull Nintendo can make Splatoon 2 with esports fully in mind (actual local multiplayer hint hint).

Esports would have absolutely nothing to do with local multiplayer. It's a shooter. No one plays a shooter competitively split-screen, they would play LAN.

I really hope this isn't just centred around Japan, that will be a shame.

Have a global outlook, Nintendo. Try your best to attract the wealthy neighbours, Korea and China, while you're at it. I don't know how they can/will do it though. But yes, let this be a stepping stone.

I believe this is an accurate assessment.

I'm curious to see if this has any long tail effect on Wii U sales.

The attach rate for this is impressive.

At the risk of drawing ire I wonder if Nintendo shouldnt just go full TF2 and make a gear economy.

Slightly misleading title, since the prize pot will be across all of the games, not just Splatoon. Still would expect the Splatoon specific pot to be on the high end of shooter tournament prize pools, though.

Welp, we eSports now, SplatGAF!

Quite a time to be a squid.

And in roughly 3 months? That's impressive! I wish Smash could get this kind of competitive backing.

And to those who claim this is bad because there is a small playerbase--I say nay, because this can only make the game's playerbase go up with more exposure.

it also sets up the inevitable sequel quite well

there is literally nothing bad about this

They only came up with the idea for Splatoon after Wii U was already out. There was no opportunity there.

Seriously. I feel like half the games that come out on Wii U people are like, "Nintendo should've released this at launch" as though they just decided not to release them for years.

Do you know how many pairs of pants you can buy with $1 million

You could wear a pair on each leg, on each arm, on your head

And you could buy enough pants so all your friends and family could do the same

And all of their friends and family could do the same

Think about it

It's Splatoon, so zero pairs.

The success of Splatoon caught Nintendo by surprised and it wasn't even a huge hit when it was first announced either.

It only started to get noticed when people started to play it on the E3 floor and saw it on the treehouse stream.

also the tesfire sold a bunch of people on the game nintendo did everything right with this game.

I am regularly watching Ink or Sink tournament matches on Twitch. This game is fucking amazing to watch, especially when hearing the party chat with team coordination, etc.
Splatoon ESPORTS baby.

Ink or Sink proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that with the proper commentary and spectator setups, competitve Splatoon is a juggernaut waiting to be unleashed. The game is so dynamic and full of high skill/high entertainment factor moments that the moment it becomes a thing, it'll probably be my second most watched thing on Twitch/in competitive gaming outside of fighting game events.

Seriously, anyone mildly interested in the game or it's competitive potential, just give this a watch sometime. It's a fantastic set between two squads (EDPP and Squid Squad Clubs) that was streamed recently.

Is there any spectator mode in Splatoon?
How are they running these tournament online then?

There is no Spectator mode at this time.
What happens if you want to watch an Ink or Sink Tournament game right now is to look at Twitch channels and find one of the players streaming a match.
This is why spectator mode is like the most important things for Splatoon to implement. This is what I've been saying a lot of time.
