I think it is still outside the lobby.

My initial reaction is that this is a bad thing. But since there's no party system anyway, it's probably better this way. Can definitely keep the amount of time spent between matches lower.

When joining a friend, I wonder how it works. Could be that somebody explained this somewhere, and I haven't seen it yet. Do you spectate as you would in MK8? Or does it lock you out completely (therefore need to keep spamming relentlessly to get in) if the lobby is full, as it did in MK8 during the brief period in which the spectating functionality was broken? Or do you wait in a queue so to speak (with no spectating)?

Has anyone with review copies shed any light on this yet?

- abilities are random, including the main one

What exactly do you mean by this? You can't equip a piece of gear and know for a fact what at least ONE of the equipped abilities will be? If that's the case, that kind of sucks for strategizing and optimizing builds..

Or do you just mean random while browsing the store (but when you buy it, the main ability is "locked in" when using that particular item in the future).

I just realized people havent used the Splat charger correctly. You don't need to charged the whole thing to shoot. You can actually spam it

Second thing. Basically you can have the same gear with different abilities. Sub abilities that are being unlocked are also random.

That's not very effective though. You can use it to quickly paint some small spots but I don't think it does much damage.

The Direct had friends listed as "Joinable", so maybe it would indicate whether you can join them or not. Have no clue outside of that.

I mean that the same piece of gear won't have the same main ability for everyone. When browsing the store, you will get to see what the main ability is for the gear. I'm not sure when the main ability is locked in (like say if you don't buy it, does that mean the main ability will still be locked in?), but you don't have to worry about it once you own the piece of gear, it will stay locked in.

Also, I'm not sure if the main ability can be re-rolled. I guess we'll have to wait till the first Splatfest.

haven't watched it yet (they show singleplayer content in the background for whatever reason) but they probably give us some details about the gear abilities. Will listen to it now

e: abilities indeed stack, but we knew that already
singleplayer and multiplayer weapons are separated
can't change weapon configuration
can't change button layout
3-4 hours of multiplayer to reach lvl 10

Is that not something that's known? It does pretty pitiful damage if it's not charged, though. I could never get the hang of using it myself.

Thanks for the answer RE the gear.

I'm sure those with review copies know this by now how joining works. I'm sure somebody has confirmed/denied somewhere.

Since there's no party system, I'd hope they make it as "easy" as possible to join friends. The way MK8 works currently would be acceptable. The way MK8 used to work briefly where you'd get errors for any full lobby and need to keep spamming would be crappy.

I know it doesnt do that much damage, I was referring more to paint the floor than anything else. When the testfire happened, people with the splat charger complained that it didn't paint enough and it was useless lol

I think that the uncharged shot is only good at filling small gaps near corners. Leave the other gaps to the splattershots and rollers. The Charger's job is to attempt to slow down the other team so that your team can gain or keep control of an area. I've scored over 1100 points (technically 800 raw points) by defending the center of Walleye Warehouse.

the charger seems to be fairly decent at painting corridors and large open areas

I am afraid I am going to get juniored if I make a thread about this but

Looks like the manga launches on May 28th. We'll try to get more info on this series and hopefully hear about an English release!

No prob, sorry I wasn't very clear in the initial post due to me making it point form.

I doubt that the press would be able to test out joining friends thoroughly due to there not being many players.

They are coordinating to play on Ranked Battles today at 9PM PT. Hope to see some Splat Zones gameplay.

Wish I could say, but I've yet to actually be online when another person on my friend list has been online.

I wonder if it will be a long manga series or just a couple chapters.

Just looked into main abilities on gear, and I'm pretty sure I'm wrong about main abilities being random.

Two different videos had the same gear with the same abilities, so I don't think the main ability on gear is random.

as long as you can still switch out the main abilities

having to wear specific gear sets for the abilities you want would be stupid, every clothing item should be fully customizable with every ability so your character can wear whatever you like

I'm sad knowing the Splatoon manga will almost assuredly never receive an official localization :(

I bet the art in it will be sweet

I bet if the game gets popular enough, it will. Several Zelda manga have been brought over, after all.

Well, yes, but even the most optimistic Splatoon estimates don't put it anywhere near reaching the success of the Zelda series

And with NoA's godawful marketing of the game, it sure as hell won't be lighting any fires stateside - at least not with any demographics who are over age 12 or not gaming enthusiasts that follow the industry closely.

I don't know why people think the marketing is godawful. It's catchy and people are talking about it. That's success by any marketer's metric.

I hate to be the one to break it to you, Jintor, but... you're a kid, you're a squid :(

I know that must be so difficult to hear. Take all the time you need to process it, and remember, GAF is always here for you brother. Stay strong.

I've seen references to weapon blueprints acquired from the single player campaign. Are there a lot of weapons you've got to create that way?

The weapon shop owner is a horseshoe crab (kabutops), but he named his store Ammo Knights (ammonite, omastar).

Clearly the helix fossil at work.

Everytime I look at anything Splatoon, I wish Hideki Naganuma was approached to make some extra music for the game. At least for some new maps, or if they would do some JSR clothing dlc.

A bunch of us folks with review copies organized a play session of Splat Zones tonight, so expect some pretty awesome footage to appear online over the weekend. I didn't get the chance to setup to capture footage myself, unfortunately.

Out of curiosity, how exactly did you go about doing this? Did you all add each other as friends and use the Join Friend function?

We used the Splatoon Miiverse and Twitter to set a time for when people should join a room.

I'm thinking he's asking how you got everyone in without having randoms show up. Which I'm guessing you can Join Friends up to 8 people right now but still can't do custom matches as it isn't out yet? Maybe you can go into detail how you join people, or is it just the join friends ioption in the list?

We just joined the Ranked lobby on our own. The people playing are those we had been in touch with on Miiverse or Twitter. Not many people are above Level 10, so this was the best way to get a group of at least 8 to play Ranked matches.

I have no idea what you're trying to say.

Unfortunately missed the ranked battle meet up. 5am is too early here in Britain!
Will try and organise a more sociable time for us Europeans that you Americans could also make!

Spamming it is not very effective, because of the small area covered like, a drop, and the slow fire rate, but half charges are great for some quick ink clearing or small verticals.
