Sports games (FIFA, PES, NBA 2K, NHL, NFL) should be live service experiences

Would you pay (and keep paying) for a subscription instead of the full yearly release price ($70)?

Though, of course, this won't happen. Dropping the yearly $70 from full releases for a, let's say, $30 annual subscription would be silly from a business standpoint.

Thoughts?

edit: I think I should clarify- They should be live service in terms of content delivery, i.e, regular updates and balancing instead of the yearly releases

Of course they should be live service experiences. They don't make big enough changes year to year to warrant a full price but they do it because they know they can get away with it. I mean that's fine if FIFA fans don't mind shelling out $60 for more or less the same game...

What PES have done is good imo, you pay once for the game, and then there is update each year. Still, the price is too high for the update as it coast something like 35 euro.

They wouldn't mark the monthly price down, they would mark it up. That's how you get it for "cheaper". Instead of paying $70 all at once, you can pay monthly increments of $6.99. Just like Amazon Prime is $13 per month and $120 per year.

$13 per month = $156 per year.

But I suspect it would come as a sports package -- not individual titles.

Those are the kind of games that should do it yes.

Though there are dangers that devs get lazy and keep old A.I., graphics, animations for even longer and just do barebones updates.

Yeah they should be.

It's funny how every year they introduce some groundbreaking dynamic total control system, and whenever I play a Fifa game, it's still pretty much the same as FIFA 98.

The guys coming up with all those new feature names every year honestly have a pretty tough job.

Even longer than now?

Taking FIFA and PES as examples, I already consider their yearly releases barebones updates. They tinker with balancing for sprinting, AI press, passing and shooting every year, but these are changes other devs make in monthly updates.

That probably feels that way, because other games have bigger intervalls between their releases. Comparing Fifa 2017 to 2022 would probably be fairer

They already are. You just have to pay once a year for them. FIFA 22 costs $59.99, so if you want to pretend that's $5 a month then be my guest
Yeah.

Since the ps360 they are... The changes each years are minimum. The ps2 gen was the last gen that each new pes or fifa felt different enough to warrant a sequel.

After the ps2 gen both EA and Konami basically do minor upgrades (or even downgrades) on the gameplay, makes the games prettier (or uglier, depending on the case) and asks 60 usd for it.

After they added those Ultimate Team modes things got even worse.

No and if you worked for EA and suggested that they would laugh you out the room. There is a massive fan base that only buys sports games even if they were prices $100 per year they would buy it. Why have a game be F2P and have MTX money. Why not both. EA are a business they don't give a fuck. The same reason Nintendo will release a port full price they don't give a fuck. It's supply and demand. If they see sales drop they will adjust if not why should they.

I'm comparing them to Rocket league and games like that because if we're being honest, that's what their content output has been like over the years.

Comparing FIFA 17 to 22, I honestly believe all those changes could be done in a year of focused balance updates.

Why should it take a whole year for a sprinting/shooting tweak, a slight menu adjustment and roster updates?

No idea sorry friend. I don't work for EA and I mostly play Fifa once a year at mates.

I owned Fifa and tried it to play online, but this mode wanted me to pay booster packs for continuing to play online and I felt ripped off (and I haven't even paid for anything besides the price for the physical game) and never tried it again.

Same. I don't see the point paying for shit.
These were always leisure games you play whenever your mates came over or you just want to chill.

Something i said long time ago, but won't happen since a lot of people are still willing to put 60$ on the same games with new update each year, as sales results shows.

FIFA World was a thing for 18 months and nobody cared. It didn't make it out of beta. It was a FUT game for PC and absolutely cratered.
Might as well pay for the yearly package, there's a shitload of content anyway. FIFA points can be moved to the new game if you're into that.

Theve done that once, because they wanted to concentrate on moving to unreal engine for this years.

I could see EA bundling all of its sports games for a subscription. Hell, I could see them bundling them with actual sports channels and having cross-media events.

Havent bought a sports game in years. Gamepass baby. All sports game come out about 9 months after launch.

Unless you are an online gamer wanting to play league games online, just wait it out if you are a solo gamer.

NBA 2k atleast did some improvements over the years especially the graphics on the new consoles are insane but fifa has been literally copy paste with a handful of few animations every year since like fifa 16
Fifa should've been live service after 16

"This isn't what I meant, damnit konami" he shouted, but they could not hear him as they laughed, eyeing their filthy mtx profit projections, removing offline singleplayer, adopting FIFA's control scheme and forcing mobile platform agnostic gameplay.

And the monkey's paw slowly curled

On a serious note though, it's great that they finally stopped pretending at least.

fuck that live service bullshit. you are paying premium for that shit.

Agreed...especially when they are designed around online play.
they are now because of the live bullshit. i play football games since 1994. stop playing in 2017. gets worse every year.
