I've watched the first episode of basilisk a couple times now and I'm still confused on something.

The first time I watched it I was just completely oblivious to change in time. It starts out at what I'll call the present, but partway through jumps back 33 years.

I noticed the two leaders have the same names as that of the the young couple. But 33 years is in no way enough time for them to age that badly. The old leaders also talk about their grandchildren being in love, but the love we see is 33 years ago. Also if I randomly assume they were like 20 years old, theyd now be 53 years old. And It seems kinda weird to me to be 53 and still have living grandparents but I suppose its entirely possible.

is then, every child given the same name, such that bouth their children and grandchildren could be named Kouga and Ogen? And then, what we see in the past was an attempt but failure at love and then their children finally fall in love in present day times?

Or is there some simpler explanation that just went completely over my head?

I dunno that it's a big deal, not having seen the episode in question, but perhaps some spoiler tags would be in order?

FnordChan, who hopes to have time to sit down and watch Hachimitsu to Clover tonight

its not really spoilers as the only thing I revealed about the episode is:
it has a flashback
two people are in love

the rest is speculation based on those two facts. And really, my speculation means little since I have no clue whats going on :(

if anything, I think reading my post before watching the episode might be beneficial to someone to more easily latch onto the story as it jumps around a lot.

I assumed it was their grandchildren. Was it mentioned that it went back 33 years? I couldn't tell since the font they use is absolute crap.

It gave the years

1614 and 1581

NOW its time for spoiler tags =P

everythign about the choosing of the shogun and 10v10 takes place in 1614. Everythign between the young Kouga and Ogen and the village being attacked and Ogen's family and elders or whatever being killed takes place in 1581

That's cool. Like I said, I hadn't seen it yet, but I was mildly concerned that I was getting a bit more info than I needed. At any rate, I'll go watch Basilisk and come back to discuss the plot points with you at some point. ^_^

FnordChan, overly cautious

The main flashback story of ep1 was about the 2 elderly leaders of the 2 clans and how they got drifted apart. I dunno about the time difference but I don't think it really matters.

Hrm, I guess I really need to see some of these new season series, if for nothing else but to keep up on the banter. I guess I'm a little too distracted with the day job and DVDs right now...(oh, and SAC OST3 now looking at a possible July release...drool...)

In otherwords, they aged particularly badly.

I didn't realise there was a change in time...

I just thought the two younger were their children/grandchildren, and that what happened at the village was a direct result of the aggression ordered upon each other by the shogunate...

I sat down last night and watched a bit of anime, namely the raw of Hachimitsu to Clover.

It's interesting. Think a college version Here Is Greenwood, but with more women (including a cameo by Art School Girl from GAEA) and a touch of the shoujo harem show (ala Fruits Basket). The plot (what there was of it) goes like this: hapless undergradutes at an art college are poor, hungry, and fond of Wacky Hijinx(tm) (including an extended sequence at the beginning of the episode about them gorging on croquettes) when some guy (Fellow classmate? Professor?) shows up with his cute 18 year old cousin. The guy's reactions range from "I am intrigued" to "I am in love" to "I am going to make you pose for photographs to be used as reference for my sculpture projects", the later helping keep the other two guys from being annoying. Meanwhile, seperate from all this, an attractive women is trying to throw a pot, overhears catty art school bitches (obviously graduates from Oniisama E) talking about something or other, then botches the project rather spectacularly for reasons I don't understand.

Wacky Hijinx(tm).

Like I said, it's interesting, and that's even with my understanding of the episode completely crippled by my own illiteracy. This show needs subtitling bad. Still, even then I could tell roughly what was happening thanks to reading about the show online and whatnot. This is also how I knew the heroine was 18, which you would never know if the website didn't say "Hey, she's legal, we swear." This chick looks no older than 13 or so, which is moderately disturbing, but fits in relation to the way everyone else is drawn, which is to say they all look a whole lot younger than they really are. For instance, the lead male character is supposedly 19 and looks more like he just started high school. I should stress that the girl isn't drawn in a particularly lolita sort of way...she just looks way too short and cute to be remotely college-age.

bscap7055.jpg

No fucking way is she eighteen.

What really sells the show so far, however, is it's visual style, which is fantastic. Lots of subtle colors and soft lighting give it a rather realistic look, except for the over-the-top comedy moments which, suprisingly, didn't come off as being horribly excessive. The show also gets bonus points for an opening that features both sculptures made out of food and food sculptures, which makes sense for a bunch of would-be starving artists.

I would gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.

So, yeah, it's got potential. I'm really hoping a sub comes around soon so I can actually understand what the hell is going on. Pics lifted from Matthew's Anime Blog.

who's the character in your avatar? and where's she from?

That's Saki, the outsider character from Genshiken aka Your Anime Club: The Animated Series. Genshiken is pure, unadulturated beauty from beginning to end and you need to go download it and watch it right this minute. 12 episodes of otaku hijinx, ranging from slice of (geek) life to painfully funny. They go on doujinshi buying sprees, hit Comiket several times over the course of the series, try to explain the sex appeal of cartoon characters, obsess over a fictional TV anime called Kujibiki Unbalance (itself animated into three complimentary OVAs that, if the first one is representative, are a hoot and a half), cosplay, play video games (particularly Guilty Gear and Puyo Puyo) and generally have a lot of fun. It is goddamned brilliant. Everyone should watch Genshiken.

Dead

well not really...yet
OMG the Kino no Tabi movie is subbed :D

but the movie is only half an hour long :(

Edit: err ok, after checking some Japanese sites, and a kino site, this is actually the movie version shown last fall in a festival and which is now on DVD in a bundle with a book, which ironically I was going to purchase. So I guess this isn't the final movie, at least I'm pretty sure it isn't, info is pretty cryptic....

I didn't see what was so great about Eureka 7. Just seemed like a standard 'boy wants to join mech fighting group.'

But then I'm no mech lover, so I guess I'm not aware of the subtleties that make a good/bad mech anime.

*DLing Eureka "Seven"*, this better be good, gaf, or I'm giving you such a whipping with my belt!

Oh, and stupid ba**-up**tes, took me 2 days to realize that Gunbuster 2 was Aim for the top. >_<

Eureka 7 is well animated. But it seems to be just as intriguing as all their other mecha animes…

I'm not really a big mech fan as a general rule, but if you really want to see what separates Eureka 7 from the crappy/average mech shows, go download the first epiosde of Sousei no Aquarion, because that used just about every mech cliche in the book.

If you're not a fan of sci-fi stuff, obviously you wouldn't enjoy it. The way episode 1 was handled was really good, and it lays really good foundation for the remaining 49 episodes to continue developing the world before throwing in some awesome BONES plot twists and leading up to an asskicking finale next year. :D

Eureka 7 is 50 episodes and it's already licensed?! Guess I'll wait a while before watching, don't want to commit to something that might turn out to be crap.

I tried watching acuarian as well, made it like 2 minutes in. So I can generaly agree that Eureka is far beyond other crappy mech shows, but I guess for me its:

Eureka 7 - meh
Sousei no Aquarion - unbearably terrible

I don't dislike sci-fi but I have generel aversion but not hatred of mechs. I have a handful of mech shows I like and I figured because of the praise for this one it might fall into that special few that I enjoy.
