I sat down last night and watched a bit of anime, namely the raw of Hachimitsu to Clover.
It's interesting. Think a college version Here Is Greenwood, but with more women (including a cameo by Art School Girl from GAEA) and a touch of the shoujo harem show (ala Fruits Basket). The plot (what there was of it) goes like this: hapless undergradutes at an art college are poor, hungry, and fond of Wacky Hijinx(tm) (including an extended sequence at the beginning of the episode about them gorging on croquettes) when some guy (Fellow classmate? Professor?) shows up with his cute 18 year old cousin. The guy's reactions range from "I am intrigued" to "I am in love" to "I am going to make you pose for photographs to be used as reference for my sculpture projects", the later helping keep the other two guys from being annoying. Meanwhile, seperate from all this, an attractive women is trying to throw a pot, overhears catty art school bitches (obviously graduates from Oniisama E) talking about something or other, then botches the project rather spectacularly for reasons I don't understand.
Wacky Hijinx(tm).
Like I said, it's interesting, and that's even with my understanding of the episode completely crippled by my own illiteracy. This show needs subtitling bad. Still, even then I could tell roughly what was happening thanks to reading about the show online and whatnot. This is also how I knew the heroine was 18, which you would never know if the website didn't say "Hey, she's legal, we swear." This chick looks no older than 13 or so, which is moderately disturbing, but fits in relation to the way everyone else is drawn, which is to say they all look a whole lot younger than they really are. For instance, the lead male character is supposedly 19 and looks more like he just started high school. I should stress that the girl isn't drawn in a particularly lolita sort of way...she just looks way too short and cute to be remotely college-age.
No fucking way is she eighteen.
What really sells the show so far, however, is it's visual style, which is fantastic. Lots of subtle colors and soft lighting give it a rather realistic look, except for the over-the-top comedy moments which, suprisingly, didn't come off as being horribly excessive. The show also gets bonus points for an opening that features both sculptures made out of food and food sculptures, which makes sense for a bunch of would-be starving artists.
I would gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.
So, yeah, it's got potential. I'm really hoping a sub comes around soon so I can actually understand what the hell is going on. Pics lifted from
